I bought a factory sps 700 243 about 6 months ago. I tore this gun apart and added a criterion 6.5 creedmoor barrel. After about 100 rounds metal from inside the bolt face had broken away from factory 700 extractor. I sent the bolt to a gunsmith who cut it for a sako extractor and I put it back on a 308 remage barrel. I fired 5 factory rounds to get on paper then started my OCW test. At a very load (I'd have to look again at my data ) but it was at the starting weight for that particular load. I ate a face full of powder and could not open the bolt. Here is what the bolt looks like after that case. Is it possible I got a bad bolt? The gun was head spaced correctly with go and no go gauges, torqued to 45 inch pounds. This load should have been light. Lapua brass full length sized, cci 200 primer 178 eldx under 42.5 grs of win 748.

There's more going on here.

1. The shop who did the work should have installed a bushing into the bolt "ring" to fix the missing piece(s) and to better support the case.
2. Sako extractors suck. Your lucky all you did was eat the powder. Them things are dangerous and are known to poke eyeballs from skulls.
3. Make double/triple sure HS is correctly addressed. Make sure its checked with ALL relevant pieces of the bolt removed. No springs, no nothing. Then check with the extractor installed again.

Why?

I've seen more than once where the inner edge of the extractor that marries up with the bolt face sticking proud by the thousandths or two. This makes the gauge behave as though HS is tighter than it really is.

Next, get a quantity of new brass/ammo. Fire one and compare to existing cases very carefully. If you see anything abnormal in terms of growth, there's other issues.

Proceed carefully. This stuff is no joke. An orbital fracture and torn retina was my price of admission about 3.5 years ago.

I have a 5R Gen2 .300WM and am able to shoot better than .5MOA with factory ammo, action feels smooth loading and unloading however after I fire a round I have to pry the bolt up to release, then can easily move it back towards the buttstock. This is a SS action with a factory cerakote, Rem wants me to send it back to look at it but I am afraid that this will reduce the accuracy as Rem could open up the bolt face.
What is everyone’s thoughts?

The extractor or any other item has no bearing on your described issue. A face full of powder is not a result of a bolt or its contents. 748 is an unstable powder and always has been.

This issue wasn't your bolt or your extractor. Something caused extreme high pressure. Wrong powder, wrong load, partially plugged barrel, wrong barrel, etc.

Jerry, were you responding to my thread? If so, would a suppressor cause this issue? The past few rounds were not fired suppressed. Thanks

Suppressors maintain muzzle pressure in the barrel for a bit, which is why you can get a face full of gas from a suppressed AR. Muzzle pressure is on the order of 10-15 ksi, compared to 65ksi peak chamber pressure shortly after the bullet jumps to the lands.

Jerry listed a good set of potential causes. Is your barrel clear? Any possibility you double-charged the cartridge?

Understandable, no double charges that I am aware of. I cleaned the action very well, I Am going to shoot the rifle in a few days and will see if it happens again.
