Hey guys, first off let me just say I've spent a lot of time reading the posts here and I must say that I'm really impressed with this community. The knowledge and honesty is appreciated and its also why I came here to ask my question.

Background: I've been interested in target shooting since I was a kid and my dad bought me my first .22LR (Marlin 25N). Once I got older and started appreciating the sport I upgraded to a Savage Mark II and put in an incredible amount of ammo and trigger time into the rifle practicing my fundamentals.

Now: Time for the big move. I have $1500 to spend on my first centerfire rig. I want to go with a .308 but Im torn between Savage FP-SR and Remington 700 SPS Tac.

I want to know, given what you know about me, which rifle you think would be best for me.

Also, I love the Savage accu-trigger but I hate the heavy bolt lift. And Ive never fired a Remington 700 (but Ive handled one in a local shop).

Re: Finally taking my first big boy step.

I personally would recommend to you a Savage Precision Carbine with the threaded 5R barrel. Ease of handling, superb accuracy, and it has the rigid Accustock. You might want to consider changing out the stock later from the Accustock. But if you get the 10FP-SR, you will be changing the stock quickly.

The Accutrigger is not a bad trigger at all to work with. I have changed out most of mine to a Rifle Basix SAV-1, but have now decided to stay with the Accutrigger. I have changed out the springs to get it where I want it, and I love it now!!

I say all of that, specifically because I absolutely LOVE Savage rifles. They are without a doubt, the most accurate rifles that I have ever owned, and I have owned MANY different ones. In addition, you can get some high capacity magazines that work with the factory bottom metals, so you don't have to go through the hassle of changing out everything to get there.

If I can help you with any other questions concerning Savages, should you go that route, just let me know.

Re: Finally taking my first big boy step.

Flip a coin...both options are great rifles.

If you like the Accutrigger on your Mark II you might as well get a centerfire with the same trigger. And as rat mentioned, there are fairly cheap/easy ways to reduce the bolt lift.

There are more off-the-shelf stock options for a R700, and they have slightly better resale value, but IMO that's about the only thing going for it other than a very subjective opinion about aesthetics.

Re: Finally taking my first big boy step.

Can't go wrong with either choice man. either way you go you'll be working with a superb rifle. Both are damn accurate, but the remmy trigger does suck, waiting on a timney to arrive myself. I liked the accutrigger on both my savage rimfires, and they shot well. I currently have the R700 aac-sd and cant praise the accuracy enough in the choate tac stock i put it in!

Re: Finally taking my first big boy step.

I'd go with the 700 and order the stock of your choice. The 700s don't have some many revisions over the years so basically all 700 parts are interchangeable. Not the case with Savage.

$1500 should get you an SPS Tactical or SPS varmint and just about cover a Manners Mini Chassis stock or AICS.

Re: Finally taking my first big boy step.

Chevy versus Ford Discussion...you can get either and just work with it and get really good at what ever rifle you are using and be very happy. I think Remington has more of a customizing following but I think Savage is coming forward with those options too.

Re: Finally taking my first big boy step.

I will go ahead and throw in a Tikka T3 Varmint/Tactical for you to consider as well. Great trigger out of the box, as well as superb accuracy. Stock is nothing to write home about, but there are plenty of aftermarket options there. Just my .02

Re: Finally taking my first big boy step.

Get the Savage in the HS Precision stock. In my opinion, the fit and finish of the entire SPS line from Remington is lacking and I personally won't buy another one. The most notable issue I've seen is feed ramps that gouge the brass on all of the SPS's that I own.

Re: Finally taking my first big boy step.

If you get along well with the accutrigger, the Savage might be your best bet. I have one on a PTA and I despise it.

I also agree with what the previous poster said about Savage needing to stadardize their mags, action screw spacings, and barrel shank diameters. None of this is a huge deal. I'm a f-cking caveman and I like simple.

Re: Finally taking my first big boy step.

I am looking at the Savage 110 FCP HS Precision in 300WinMag.I believe I just read that there are high cap mags for use with factory bottom metal .Is this true?If so where would I look ?I like the idea of DBM and was looking at CDI but if I can save a bit of money up front I would like to do so .
