I have a browning b78 in 30-06 that I want to handload for but I can't figure out how to find the best bullet depth for land engagement. The is a 1885 high wall so all the methods I have used for a bolt action won't work. Any suggestions? I'll be using federal brass with 168 matchkings and nosler 125 ballistic tips.

If you were to resize a case and push the shoulder back by only a couple thousandths, and if you drop that resized case in the chamber, can you measure the head of the case to any feature on the action? Use the depth probe on a dial/digital caliper.

FL size a fired case and bump the shoulder .002”

Cut a slit lengthwise down the neck into the shoulder. Deburr the slit.

Insert a bullet into the neck. It will slide in and out with moderate resistance.

Chamber the round, push the case all the way into the chamber until the shoulder bottoms out. The rifling will seat the bullet.

Push the round out of the chamber with a cleaning rod carefully.

Measure the OAL.
