Suppressors First Suppressor Advice

Planning to purchase my first can in the next few months. It’ll be used on a 6.5G AR and 6.5 CM bolt gun.

I’m currently looking at the SICO Omega, YHM Resonator and the TB 6.5 Ultra 7.

Any advice or other options I should be looking at?

I should add that both guns are used frequently for hunting coyotes/Varmints and deer so weight/length is a concern. Don’t want anything super long or heavy.

I have the Sico Omega 300. I chose that specific can because I was able to shoot my 6.5grendel and my DPMS GII hunter with my son's Omega. My poi shift was very minimal(1/4") and the can was so light that it didn't change the feel of the weapon.

If possible, I suggest that you try to find someone that will let you shoot the suppressors you are interested in.

I'm too old to try to be "tactical" anymore so I have no problem with the overall length of my rifle with the can attached. both of my hosts are 20" bbl and I am going to have my Ruger Hawkeye 257Rob threaded full length also.

My biggest concerns about purchasing a can was #1 weight, #2 price and #3 overall length. Figure out what really matters to you and pick the can that covers as many wants/needs as possible.

The silly part being I could never justify the prices and processes until I was able to get my grubby hands on a quality can. I all of a sudden find myself looking for more cans and hosts. Be careful, this may happen to you also.

P.S. It also surprised me that my host got even more accurate with the can in place.

You have three good choices listed. I have the Ultra 7 and the Omega. I like them both quite a bit. Both of mine are brake mounted versions.

I would add that you should take a look at the Griffin Armament Paladin. I just got to lay hands on my Paladin and also a Bushwhacker 46 and I liked everything about the design. They have very similar baffle geometry to a can I already have in possession which is the Recce 7 (also a good can), so while I can't say how the Paladin will sound, it should be close to the Recce 7 which has great suppression numbers and phenomenal tone.

To be honest, for me at least, the biggest factor when selecting a can is how robust is the company that is manufacturing them. All of the companies you mentioned should be around for a good while. They all provide great customer support and produce a quality product.

I got to shoot a YHM Resonator and for the money, that thing is tough to beat. If there wasn't a ridiculous wait on cans, I would definitely own one of them as well.

I started out with a .22 can, and then jumped to rifle, IMO rifle cans are.......meh, they don't make the rifle hearing safe, you still have to have ear pro, idk, I just find them underwhelming. Now pistol cans, or rather cans and subsonic ammo, now that's where it's at for me. I doubt I'll ever buy another centerfire rifle can, but pistol cans I can't rule out.

I have a mix of SiCo, Thunderbeast, and DeadAir cans. By far my favorite is my DeadAir Sandman S quick attach. Performs just as well as my direct thread Thunderbeast with the convenience of the quick attach and flexibility with the interchangeable end caps. Outstanding accuracy on my bolt guns, and equally at home on my ARs during carbine courses. Atleast consider it.

I have no experience with them. Hoping to get something that is “hearing Safe” for a couple shots when hunting, less recoil and lowered chance of a second coyote running off.

I think that those are all goals that a quality can will be able to achieve. Try to stick with a company that'll be around should you have problems. YHM, SiCo, Griffen, Rugged, TBAC, in no particular order are the companies that I'd try to stick to. I'm sure I'm forgetting one or two as well.

Whatever you do, put it under a Trust. A Trust has way more long term value than filing as an individual. It can just be you filing the Trust as the only responsible member and add and remove people after processing is complete. Also pick a short title for the trust name as you must have it and your city/state engraved if you do a SBR.
I have direct thread Silencerco and SWR single caliber cans as they work well for my intent.

Hearing safe with a suppressor on a hunting type rifle is kind of in a gray area.

My family and I hunt a ranch where there is a lot of pasture. In an open area like that, I would say that I don't need any hearing protection when I am firing supersonic ammunition.

A tight closed up brushy/forested type of a hunting area will require some kind of protection because the sonic crack itself will damage hearing over the long run. Directly behind the can on the rifle is the quietest area with my set up.

I was sitting next to my son when he filled his deer tag last November. I was approximately 3 feet to his left, away from his rifle's ejection port. (DPMS Gen I 308Win) When the hammer dropped, There was a sonic crack but no ear pain. The next thing I heard was the impact of the bullet on the whitetail's vitals. It's a glorious sound.

I'm not able to properly measure the sound but I'm sure the shot did no harm to my ears. Even the whitetail does that were ~200 yards away didn't react to the shot.

Good luck with your search, there are a crap ton of high quality cans and manufacturers out there.

Also, just to rub it in and piss people off, I recieved my can in hand only 87 days after I dropped the envelope in the mail box!

What kind of suppressor is on your sons gun?

Get a 30 cal can rated to 300 winmag. That will cover just about anything. Once you shoot suppressed, you wont want to shoot without one. And if you decide on another gun with a 30 cal or smaller bullet, you're covered.

I use to shoot 5.56 with my omega without ear pro in an open field. My ears would feel fine and after 200 rounds I decided to drive home. On the way, my eardrums started stinging and I knew a layer of protection is needed on an ar's at least.

If I’m taking it to the range I’ll be using ear plugs no matter what. I’d just like to take a few shots while hunting and not have my ears ring more than usual for a week lol

Whatever you decide, make it a brake attach. I have several cans and my TBAC Ultra 7 is my favorite. It's a good balance of quiet, durability, weight. Another thing that I like is that there's a very good chance the folks at TBAC are reading this post right now. If you had a problem you will be dealing with the main dudes in the company, not some random customer service rep. Pretty cool.

I would also suggest the Surefire 300Ti and 6.5Ti. They are really really light and have the best attachment method for taking the can on and off with return to zero.

it will be a mix of both but the AR is more of a SPR/hunting setup so no rabid firing.

Nah. Go tbac. I dont think you can go wrong either way but in my mind tbac will last longer as a company and be able to provide you support. Silencerco is a big company that has gotten rid of alot of people in the past.

Silencerco is nice because of the different attachments, but with area 419 it makes it all a moot point.

Silencerco took care of me 2 months ago and re-cored my can. I'm gonna be buying a can soon and I'm either going tbac or dead air nomad. Nomad is fatter so it deals with semi autos better.

I like the nomad a lot but it seems like adding in the muzzle device mount defeats the purpose. Might as well get the sandman at that point or am I off base?

I have a Saker, great mount but the thing is a boat anchor. I also have a Sig SRD the mount sucks but it is lite. Since you ask about Griffin, just buy a Recce 7 and be done with it, best can I have shot and handled.

For a dedicated 6.5mm rifle silencer, I'd recommend taking a look at the Explorr 65. It's a high-performance tubeless can which features our precision taper mount interface.

Also, consider the Paladin 300 because it's just so incredibly versatile and my personal choice for a multi-host centerfire rifle silencer. It also uses the taper mount and fearures our patented Ratchet-Lok™ end cap which allows the can to have phenomenal durability (demonstrated in this video), while being user-serviceable. You can completely disassemble and clean the silencer, allowing you to retuirn it to factory new weight and performance specs after thousands of round remove a majority of the carbon and copper fouling. It would also facilitate easy service and potential baffle performance upgrades down the road.

At the end of the day, You should pick whichever can like the best, because there are some really great options from several manufacturers operating in today's market. Those are great choices. If you can find one, the Ultra 7 is the best performer of that group. Also consider the new Energetic Lux 6.5 that is due out next month.

I recently decided to get a second Ultra-7. I started making calls using TBAC's list of recent shipments and found several dealers with the Ultra-7 in stock - both DM & CB. I purchased one about a week ago, transferred to a local dealer, and sent in paperwork to BATFE over the weekend. There isn't much available stock, but they definitely can be found if you make a few phone calls.

Your first suppressor honestly doesn’t matter. You’ll be happy with any of those choices. Then you’ll buy more suppressors anyway. I know more people who have at least 3 suppressors instead of just 1. I have one for every gun now.

I'm not sure of the length of the barrel on your 6.5 Grendel but, I have a 20" and it is giggly quiet with 26.7gn of AR-COMP under a 130gn Nosler LRAB. The round is ~2450fps and is completely hearing safe.

Anyway, that is the load I shoot through the SICO Omega 300. Fun times are only a while away.

I would like to take this opportunity to twist up somebody's panties and let you know, I picked up my can 87 days after I mailed the packet! Neener, neener, neener!
