First timer here...

Hey all!

First timer, been doing some reading, going to be ready to purchase my first rifle in ~3-4 months.

I've settled on the Gen 3 6.5 Creedmoor Ruger Precision Rifle for my training gun.

Eventually, I want to move up to a .375CT or .416B rifle when I start to learn how to shoot at a mile+.

Due to space limitations at home, and a wife that is only begrudgingly letting me do this, I will only be able to have one rifle at a time, meaning that I will have to sell the Ruger and purchase the other rifle when I am ready to "graduate" to the longer range.

What I'm interested in here is support equipment that can make the transition. I know that some pieces are fairly range/rifle/cartridge/etc. specific, and that when you start shooting at longer distances, some tend to lose effectiveness.

I've got another thread going in the scope section, asking about the Leupold 5HD, but what I'm interested in here is the rest of it.

From what I have read, I'll need a mini weather station thing, a set of bags, and a calculator.

What should I consider? What should I avoid? And are there characteristics that would make something effective for the Creedmoor ranges, but not the .375/416 ranges?

I'll offer my thoughts and hopefully someone will come along with some 1 mile+ experience

The 6.5 Creedmoor is a good cartridge to start shooting longer distances. You can buy quality ammo for a decent price or if you reload there is a wide selection of bullets suited to longer distances.

You may want to take a step in cartridge size in between the 6.5 CM and a .375 CT. The ..375 or .416 are going to be much more expensive to shoot and will have much more recoil.

As for other shooting equipment you need some sort of front rest like a bipod or benchrest type. For the rear of the rifle you'll need a rear bag. A laser rangefinder will be needed if you don't know the distances to the targets. A weather meter is needed to measure the atmospheric conditions such as Temperature, Pressure, and help with wind speed. ( humidity has a small effect so is generally ignored ) Or you could roll up the atmospheric conditions into Density Altitude. A Ballistic calculator will be needed to generate a firing solution. If you don't have one yet play around with the one on JBM Ballistics online.

A spotting scope is handy if you have a partner to help. For longer distances you may want to invest in a long range camera which will provide video of the target and transmit it back to you. Actually, that would be handy for moderate distance as well.

I think you should man the hell up and get a 20mm. You obviously need something flatter shooting for your skillset than to be limited by an amateur hour 375 CT or silly 6.5 Creed. WTH is @Bender when you need him he's sleeping on the job with your threads. He will get you sorted out with what you need.

I don't think any reasonable person would own only a .375CT.

You can hold off on the ballistic calculator for a while. You can use wind flags and put an app on your phone to do the calculations.

You will need something to find accurate range unless you shoot on a range with known distances. You will eventually need a range finder to shoot >1,000 yards so now may be the time unless you can't afford a LRF that will reliably range 2,000 yards.

The thing that a Kestrel helps with is fast calculations and the more esoteric factors that start to become important as range exceeds several hundred yards. It's an aid, not a requirement and learning without it is probably a good idea.

Start with a rifle, good scope and then a few things like a scope level, shooting mat, cleaning gear including a bore guide, good rod (carbon fiber probably) and good chemicals. Get a shooting rest bag or a bipod depending on taste.

Next, you are most likely going to have to reload to get the type of accuracy you need to hit MOA sized targets at 1 mile+ so try to start that up sooner than later.

A good spotting scope is nice but probably not absolutely necessary. A CCTV type spotting setup might be more useful as ranges increase.

Now back to the rifle, an RPR is ok but they have had some variability in the accuracy of the factory barrel.

If the day comes that you're allowed two rifles, with one being an infrequently used ELR setup and the other an RPR, I think you might develop a taste for something nicer when you're shooting 6.5 Creedmoor.

The RPR as good as it is is an entry level "precision rifle". It opened a lot of doors with it's low price of entry and sub-MOA accuracy but there are nicer PRS production class rifles that are nicer and in my opinion more likely to hold your interest and their resale value over the next several years.

PVA, MPA and a few other manufacturers make <$2,000 production class rifles that will run rings around an RPR. In the grand scheme of how much you're spending, the difference isn't huge but the increased accuracy would be worth it in my opinion.

Once you're shooting 1,000 yards using a DOPE sheet and wind calls with your own hand loaded ammo, you'll know enough that the path forward is obvious.

First we crawl then we stand and hold onto the coffee table. In time we learn to walk, then run. Shooting is the same. The. 375 is years away. I shoot my RPR Gen 3 in 6.5 CM here in the farm out to 1000 yards off the back porch. Take you're time distance takes time and big $$$$$$. Gun, glass, spotting scope load developedment place to shoot Kestral or something like that. Reloading equipment experience safety.... Quality rangefinder, case prep equipment OMG the list is ongoing.......

If you decided on the RPR 6.5, save some cash and find a Gen 2 secondhand from someone and start shooting. The Gen 3 isnt vastly different from a Gen 2. Put a couple hundred rounds down range before deciding on aftermarket parts.

Seriously though, I was going to do that, but then I've been reading that cheytac might be ramping up production of the .375. but I don't know now when and how much it will affect prices.

So rather than sit around waiting, I'm going to take everyone else's advice and start with the 6.5.

Depends on what type of chrony you get. Chronographs measure your bullets speed. Some you physically shoot through, some attach to your muzzle, some use radar and sit off to the side of the muzzle.

Actually, I read a lot before posting, and I've been shooting for some time. Pistols, mostly, but you pick up a lot just being around people who shoot.

I thought wanted to jump into .375, but now I'm waiting to see if cheytac increases production on their rounds.

If they don't, it might be worth it to invest in a .416 rifle of some sort.
