Don't be fresh ;-p

Going to Austin to work and realized I could possibly pack my 6.5 Creedmore. I live in Upstate NY and it's been a terribly cold Spring, we still have snow on the ground, and long range isn't Texas long range. I'm also a newbie, going a bit stir crazy.

So I arrive at 1pm, rent a car and head towards? Sunset is ~ 8pm.

Ideally? A public range with steel that I can shoot 600 yards plus. Is this even possible?

Best of the West northwest of Austin. It's west of Liberty Hill on Highway 29. 19500 West State Highway 29, Liberty Hill, TX 78642. (512) 355-3486 Open 8AM-6PM daily except closed on Monday and Tuesday. Go north on IH-35 to Georgetown, and exit to go west on Highway 29. Plug it in your computer to get an idea how far it is west of IH-35. Last I checked, it was $20 per shooter or per rifle, and you first must check in at the office building, then qualify with the range officer. They have sandbags available, and you have to hit the 250 gong 3 times before moving to 500, then you must hit the 500 3 times before moving to 750. Range officer must call the hits through his scope. Gongs out to 1,000 yards. On the right side of the rifle firing line are targets at 100 and 200 yards.
