I might be late in mentioning this, but while vacationing in Ohio & Kentucky we got lucky and we're treated to an entertaining evening of watching a marathon of Forged In Fire episodes. The kids and I couldn't get enough that night, hoping to catch more shows the next night. I've noticed (upon returning home) that it is on each Tuesday night. If you have not watched it before you should check it out. It is fun to watch. Tonight an 18 year old guy won the grand prize of $10,000. For what it's worth, I think you will enjoy it.

I love that show. I dont know if its all scripted or the whole thing really is a competition. But its one of the only shows with no drama and when the contestants lose, they are shown proof.

Wish I had some of their skills. I'm constantly amazed by how quickly they turn scrap into a working blade.
They had a really bad period where they were asking for stupid 'challenges' and had some really moronic contestants. The first season, perhaps... or maybe some of the second season? About 2 months ago, like you, I got stuck in a motel and watched the latest season marathon and they had upped their game 1000 percent! Fantastic contestants. Less stupid drama and "Here make a Samurai Sword out of a Mailbox".... instead, some solid skills tests.
Enjoyable show. Yes, some very talented craftspeople there! It's one of my occasional binge-watching pleasures. But if they revert to stupid stuff re-runs.... change channel.

FIF is literally the only show i turn on the TV for.....wish they would do away with their "american idol" everyone has a sob story bit...but overall not bad.
its on TV so im sure its scripted to some extent.....but theyve had some well known smiths on and lost, so im sure the actual competition bit of it is legit.
also, Doug Marcaida has 0 skill with a sword.......knives hes great.......but ive seen him break more swords due to blatantly poor technique that gets passed off as poor forging......guy just swings them like a damn baseball bat

Yea I noticed that as well. He literally hit a carcass with the flat side of the sword and it bent like a shepherds hook and they blamed it on the smith!
Is it scripted? Yes and no. One knife maker's experience on forged in fire...
"It wheel keel." Sure it will Doug. Flat stock with an angle grinder applied "edge" wheel keel if swung hard enough. About that, how about we hit the targets with the edge of the blade more often, and less often with the flats? Can we do that?

Glad to see that many others enjoy it too. I think that I have only seen the more recent episodes, from what you describe.
A buddy of mine, who is also a gunsmith and FFL, just had and moved passed his first 'interview' to do the show.
The trouble with knife makers is that nearly anyone can do it and it only takes some motivation and work ethic to do it a lot.
To do it well, it takes tallent, attention to detail and time to the point that it becomes uneconomical.
The type of people on that show seem to be people who crank out knives of middling quality.
There are lots of amateur bladesmiths who create superior knives because they have no time constraints and occasionally no budget constraints.
It's rare to find a professional bladesmith who can create real quality without a huge price and doubly so when they forge blades to final shape rather than use stock removal technique.
I think the show scares off a lot of good bladesmiths because they are not used to rushing their process as much as the show format requires.
It also scares off bladesmiths that work exclusively with stock removal. Some people see stock removal as a lesser technique but it's kind of the only way to use the modern super alloy steels available today and can create knives clearly superior to traditional forged carbon steel.
Insisting on forged blades excludes some technology that can make a blade that will chop through a pile of wood and still shave.

My 6 year old is hooked! He was forging the bitter knife at dinner about a month ago, using the candle on the table and quenched in his water glass. I about split a rib laughing at it!! ? there is a new series from them called knife or death. We're dvr ing that one too now.
Funny how many of us here have similar likes. I just recently started watching Forged in Fire and am hooked.....my new favorite show while waiting for Game of Thrones to hurry the fuck up

Might want to check out Alec Steele on Youtube. He is very very young, 20 I think, but he has a full on blacksmithing setup and all the studio lights and cameras to pretty much put out a video everyday! Some of his builds are very long and drawn out but he is turning out some very impressive builds, with great video editing.
I enjoy watching Alec. He will go through three, four, even five test pieces to get the process right. I like his attitude towards failure, and I like his persistence. He's also a gun guy. I love that he is teaching our youngsters how to succeed through perseverance.
At least he offers a positive contribution to society. At least he takes his skill and passes it along to other without ego. Frankly I'd much rather be around someone with a positive attitude that uplifts others, than someone who degrades them.

We should all strive to be as passionate in perfecting our craft. I am amazed by his drive to see these projects through. The rapier project was totally over the top. Outstanding work, yet even at the end he was nit picking over small defects.
Kelly McMillan has one of the most obnoxious voices I've heard (Sorry Mr. McMillan). I still listen to his podcast, because the content is worth overlooking the deficiencies. A lot of things in life follow the same pattern. I for one enjoy seeing a young man produce Master level blades. It is inspiring.

My wife and I love the show but can't stand the offshoot show Knife or Death.
It's an entertaining show. That's neat and funny to hear about. I love kids enthusiasm, which he obviously has.

I watched an episode of Knife or Death and didnt like it. Not sure if its the format, or the hosts.

the contestants are douchey larpers who think they are samurai because they wear a kimono and wield a samurai sword.
it would be 1000x better if they simply made it like TopShot with knives....call it TopChop or something like that....
