A free fishing derby for kids is scheduled for Saturday in Sacramento.
The derby is sponsored by the Sacramento Police Activities League and state Department of Fish and Game.
The derby will be from 8 a.m. to noon at the Granite Regional Park lake at Romana Avenue and Power Inn Road. The lake will be stocked before the competition, and anglers will compete to catch the biggest fish.
Participants 16 years of age or older must have a fishing license. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
The derby is free, but donations will be accepted. Proceeds will benefit the SPAL, which is hosting the derby in partnership with the state Department of Fish and Game.
The SPAL was established by officers for the youth of the city. The PAL program, made up of officers, business owners and area residents, donate their time to high-risk youth.
