Yesterday , a friend and I met up to look at a new pipeline for some long range stuff on his farm. Just for the hell of it I brought my 6.5 creedmor and an 18" steel plate. We took turns shooting ect.. And he asked "what's your longest free handed shot "? I told him 520 yards and he was in awe. Next thing I know he's got the rifle up attempting it but its a GA Precision Crusader with a 27" bbl topped with a bushnell xrs. HEAVY. He handed me the rifle and said "you try it". 704 yards first rnd hit. Scope was on 12x and I didn't squeeze the trigger. I pulled the hell out of it when I was stable "enough" and on target. Pretty cool to do that.

Got to ask... What's you fellas longest free handed shot??

Back in the '90's I competed in N/M Highpower with a Colt Match Target AR MT6700, a Springfield Armory 'Loaded' M1A, and a DCM Garand. The offhand stage was fired at 200yd. My scores were fair to middlin'.

I know I'll probably never beat 704 yards. It was very lucky. But sometimes I'd rather be lucky than good :)

Come on I know there are some guys here that have made some Awsome free handed shots!! Lets hear them!

Back in 2012 my friend and I were taking some standing shots. Farthest I could get my M110 standing was just over 600m. He hit the 800m with his M24 first round. And second round. And third.

Needless to say he's the best shot I know. Same guy who was hitting out to 1000m the first week of Sniper School and had reloaded and re-engaged before most people could calculate their follow up shot.

Also the same guy who was hitting the 1 mile target and pissing off the instructors because they were trying to hit it with the 300wm. I secretly hate him and his mad skills behind a rifle lol.

I've spent most of my adult life shooting milsurp bolt actions at guesstimated/unknown ranges. Last year, however, there was a gravel pile in my neighbor's pit that we shot at, almost every day. The range was 506 yards from where we would set up. Gallon jugs filled with water are the preferred target around here and I could hit them on a pretty regular basis with M91/30s, K98s, 03-A3, No.4 Mk.I, M1A and even made a few hits offhand with my AK-74.

600 yards with a 18lb TAC Rifle on a 65% IPSC. Hard shot, especially with a suppressor acting like a wind flag on the end.

Quagmire , I know what you mean on 18#'s. HEAVY! It's like trying to pull the trigger right at the time your cross hairs centre the target. No SQUUEEEZZZZIIINNNGGH THE TRIGGER ON THESE SHOTS

We speak about shooting offhand with a rifle, but I seldom hear any reference being made to shotgunners, who regularly engage and defeat targets that are moving fast in three dimensions. The good ones don't miss very much, and I am guessing they could bring a lot to this conversation, especially about trigger management.

See if you can get em Greg. I'd love to hear their technique , and story's !!

You just have to hit the first shot. You'll be too fatigued for any follow up shots.
At least, I would be. Was doing some freehand 100m shooting the other day, but after maybe 3 shots I was unable to keep the reticle on the 100% IPSC target! (my physical fitness/upper body strength sucks though)

Been there & done that.
94-2X / 200 offhand.
I could not get crap dialed in for "X" count that day.

at the 600yard range I attend, we shoot steel animal silhouette targets all of the time standing @ 550yards (small goat size about 16" tall and on average usually get a hit about every 3rd to 4th shot) and smaller chicken silhouettes at 300ayrds on a non-stop basis... its all about creating a shooting shelf with your supporting hand... and I usually shoot it without a sling. Its really really hard.

Pistol, IHMSA, Unlimited Standing, 33x40 (missed 7 targets total) chickens at 50M, Pigs at 100M, turkeys at 150M, rams at 200M. I have shot that score 3 times. I shot that score when I won Unlimited Standing Champion for Region 2 in 2010. You are not allowed to let any part of your arms or hands touch your body. You hold the scope or barrel with your left hand, and grip with your right hand, no interlocking your arms. Way harder than it looks. "standing" (iron sights) is even harder.
