my father was a jap POW about 3 yr in se asia. yea,they ate anything they could get. included the camp commanders GSD. can't believe they got away with that. they were not closely guarded,except when working, as there was nowhere to escape to except impenetrable jungle.In a previous life, I met and knew a lot of WWII veterans. I also met a lot of WWII POWs.
Most of those former POWs were in the ETO. However, I met two former POWs held by the Japanese.
I cannot remember why, but I asked them if they ever had to eat rats.
"Yes, we ate rats. Lots of rats. We ate rats everyday, for breakfast, lunch and dinner."
I asked them what a rat tastes like.
"It's like eating a squirrel."
I've hunted, killed and eaten squirrels since then but they just don't taste the same now.
