Wondering if there is enough interest to run another 6 groups of 5 Shootout.
Would like to hear input.

I would like to remove "bipod only" restriction, but maybe break it up into categories:

Factory stock - just add optics (adjust/polish trigger allowed?)
Production (stock barreled action, allow aftermarket stocks/chassis, bedding, aftermarket triggers)
Modified (custom guns designed to be carried in field, 15-18# weight limit ?)
Open (anything goes, stocks over 3" wide, 30" barrels etc).

Maybe reduce it only to 5 groups?

These are just suggestions.

i am not military or have never competed in firearms anything, so if i suggest something queer, please forgive me.

i read the posts from last year to get a feel for what this might be. like someone said last year, this a tactical forum (not that i am tactical, i like to think i am! :)) and not a BR forum.

from the posts last year, there was some conversation on 1, 2, 300 yds. i'd like to keep it 100 yds. it seems the bench mark is always 100 yds. like 0-60 for cars.

keep the bipod for the front and monopod/sandbag for the rear.
or
bipod for the front, no support for the rear. (more real world i would assume?)

i would be in for the production class.

308 20" 5R with a mcree chassis
and
308 16" SPS in a HS

and maybe, if the rules allow, switch the barreled actions with the stocks, so i would be able to have 4 entries, cuz technically, they are different. (?)

I'm in. Well…I'll toss up a group but I won't be "in".

I think your categories is a FUBAR from the start.

Not meaning to slam you too hard on that, but making this too hard is just that. Hard.

I've already read your list and my eyes glossed over. I would just shoot and let you guys figure out where it lands. I think pics of the gear is the category ID. People aren't stupid. You show up with a barrel clamped with a vise, category isn't going to "inform" me that's not real. BUT….it is always interesting to look at groups and other people's gear that did it. Regardless.

On the past run, I just enjoyed looking at the leader board and the thread. Having to scroll through multiple threads or categories to try and compare a Chevy and a Ferrari is too much work. Let people "run the gun they brung". If there's a big gear or skill difference, it will usually delineate itself in the results.

Keep this in mind. Once the race get's going, there are a lot of us who are just trying to eek out a spot on the list. Not "win" our division.

My two cents. Worth what you paid for it.

i don't think it is that difficult.

not much different than racing classes.

take bikes for instance, it has been awhile since i followed, so things may be different.

you have (these are just basic, over generalized classes that vary from series-to-series):
600 super sport, with limited mods
1000 super stock, with limited mods
1000 super bike with bunches of mods
open class, run whatch brung

i think the OP did well with the classes.

if you enter the competition, and declare 'factory stock', and have .250 groups for all 6 groups, then you will be called out.

that is why, from last year, you had to post picks of the gun, groups on a single sheet, calipers, etc.

I'd like to keep it at one distance : 100 yards. I think 300 yard division was there just in case there are too many "bughole" shooters - it just didn't happen.

I'd like to keep one thread for both bolt and semi guns.

If we wanted to test the shooter - we'd do unsupported, but then nobody would participate. I think this is more of an equipment test and shooters ability to utilize it in most convenient and pleasant manner.

There are lots of "tactical" rifles with squeeze bag attached to rear swivel - unsupported back doesn't make sense.

The reason for allowing other front rests is simple for me - half of the time in the field I end up shooting from a branch or dirt pile with glove/coat over it - no different than a sand bag. Most guys that shoot from bipod - will do best off the bipod.
The way I have it outlined - rifles that are designed to ride the the benchrest will be in Open class. I won the Grand Prize by simply rigging a bipod to my dedicated benchest gun - this way it will stay with other benchrest guns and not water down the results of "field" guns.

The reason for my outlined classes is to see the correlation between modifying your gun and size of the groups - simple data sample. If untouched stock guns can really shoot 1/4MOA like some people claim - I want to see it; buying stocks, triggers and barrels would be worthless.

Please, have ideas coming - lets make it happen!

I'm in. I got involved in the rimfire thread and it was great motivation, tons of fun. It's your shoot so your rules. I really don't care as long as there's a picture of the rifle and a description including weight and trigger pull. I can make my own judgements from there. Post it up when your ready to go.

My bad, we definitely should have a rimfire division.

I'm trying to work out details in my head.

I'm really thinking to lower the group count to 5. 5x5 25 rounds sounds cool and gives a fair statistic.
I am also thinking about taking the initiative of running all the groups through OnTarget software and just having a quarter for size reference. No more fiddling with calipers.

And yes, the same rifle can be shot in different divisions with addition of the mods.

Again, I am open to suggestions.

you guys do realize there is already 100yard round2 going on right? you can use both bipods and sandbands (front and back) FYI.... you just cant use lead sleds... Just read the rules. Both 100 and 300 yard threads are still active and the semi-auto boys are wayyyy ahead of you guys!....

When and where would this be held? What part of the United States? Entry fees? If so I think entry fee money should be divided among winners of wash class of better yet, go to the "hide" to better improve it.

Friendly competition, no particular date, location, time. No entry fee, unless y'all say other wise. Just a time period in which to complete your entry.

I believe Elfsters competition has ended. Not much difference except adding some competition classes. Trying to get some friendly competition going.

While I understand splitting it up into groups personally I dont care. At 100yds theres not a whole lot of difference between full on customs and quality factory guns. Ive got stock 5R 308 with a timney drop in trigger and triad stock pack. With my hand loads itll shoot half inch groups all day long off a bipod and triad rear wedge bag. This is just another excuse to spend more time behind the gun and seems like fun. Once I get it back from the smith from getting the barrel threaded I'll be joining in elfsters contest. I just dont really see the point in having two simultaneously going contests.

With all due respect:

a) After just 4 weeks you abruptly ended the First Shootout, despite great participation and interest.
b) I won the first shootout fair and square - and yet managed not to get on the TOP TEN list. "Hey, I really won, I am just not on there" explanation gets old quick.
c) This thread has been going on 3 days with 400-something views with no mention of the Round 2
d) Round 2 has been going for 8 weeks with 4 entries, it had to be brought back from the dead because of this thread.

I love your idea. But I really think it needs to be managed and promoted a little bit better. You actively participate in Semi thread and it's doing fine; the fact that you don't shoot bolt is killing it.

Most of the guys just have basic rifles, without classes most of the guys become non-competitive = lack of participation.
I stand that OnTarget software is the best way to measure groups; .955" quarter is perfect reference. There is too much human input using calipers, especially when you are talking about 1/4" groups.

Do you realize out of all 7 shootout threads ( hundreds of entries and thousands of rounds by people across the globe) that I've ran that only two people have actually won, which includes you as being one of them! Check out round 1 again as you're listed the grand prize winner for christ sake. That is top dog. Once in a while my life outside of sniperhide supersedes this forum. You don't know what is going on in my real life if and when i decide to stop / start a shootout thread. Most of the time its serious if and when i do... Second, i manage these shoot out threads for free out of my own time and money. Hell, i don't even own a bolt action and i started the bolt action shootout threads so i can help out my fellow snipershide members as i was getting pm'd up side the head to do so..... As for money out of my own pocket... That goes for all of my threads above and beyond the shootout threads like my epic ar adventure and rifle reviews. That kind of stuff really does cost hundreds of dollars especially in ammo. My shootout threads don't run themselves and there is a lot of time invested in all of my shootout threads with data entry and posting pics... I currently have 5 shootout threads going on right now.... Third, promotion of this thread and all of my other shootout threads only continues when the people participate by adding entires. Shheeesshhhh, you act like i should take out some paid advertisement or something. I treat the semi auto threads no different than the bolt action, and each thread is moved forward by only snipershide members adding entires. I cant update the top ten OR the grand prize winner spot IF people dont post results. Regardless if i own a bolt action or not, i cant move a thread forward unless someone adds an entry,,,, short of me just bumping the thread.

I honestly cant believe you even went there with your last post. Jesus dude. Man alive, you just cant make some people happy. You are more than welcome to start your own shootout thread, but be forewarned.... It will take time and money out of your life to update. My time is money.

The one nice thing about running your own thread is..... You can make the rules and run it the way you want...

Hey elfster my group ave actually tied another guys for second or third. Why was i placed below him in the standings.....Just fuckin with u. These contests are for fun and nothing else IMHO. Hell i took 30 rds out, a homebuilt rifle and fired my groups in 15 minutes total time. I ended up 4 or tied for 3, who gives a shit, it's all for FUN right?

Now that I know its moboost throwing a temper tantrum Im really not interested in participating in a contest run by him. I haven't contributed to the bolt action groups or semi groups because Im just now getting my rifles back together after some mods and my loads dialed in. Within the next two weeks Ill have entries to both. Don't know if they'll be worth a damn but nobody gets better unless you practice.

Thats exactly it... They are just a fun, friendly, and trust worthy way for sh members to participate in the sport we all love across the globe. To be honest with you, i started the first shootout thread on the semi auto forum about 2years ago just to shut up the "i shoot .5moa all day long" semi auto people.... It just happened to grow into what it is today with the added benefit of people not saying the above comment without being able to back it up with a semi auto.

I really really apologize if I came off as an ass. If I knew that the round 2 was going on - I wouldn't have never started this thread. I didn't mean to come out as unappreciative of your effort or time. As a matter of fact, when I saw you that YOU posted in this threat I was excited to see what you had to say: I was really hoping for insight, idea or even a blessing. I really didn't expect a link to a 3-month old thread. Again, no disrespect or non-appreciation is intended.

I was really hoping you would have input in making the new 100 yard shootout a big success. I am very passionate about bolt action rifles and precision shooting - you had a great idea for a shootout. If there is an issue with Elfster running the bolt comp, why don't you and he team up and split the load. Also, one could just reset the "match" every few moths, quater, etc.

I do agree time is money and Elfster has a point: so here goes. tacticaltshirts.com will give some final winners a Tshirt. Person can pick from our stock and just let us know what we wants.

I don't get on here as much as I would like, so honestly, I didn't know Elfster had a new 100 going. Of if I did know, I simply forgot. But I have PM'ed him in the past since I wanted him to start up a new comp.

the bolt action threads move much much more quickly than the semi auto threads, and the shootout thread on the bolt action side of the coin is pushed off the 1st page rather quick in comparison to the semi-auto boys (probably a good reason why people forget about it, besides the fact the bolt action boys are much more serious).. ill try my best to bump the shootout threads if they get pushed back to far so people don't forget.. if you want, if you see the thread getting pushed back further than say 3 to 4 pages, then bump it just to remind people.


there are 3 things I have learned about these shootout threads:

1.) as the price of ammo goes up = less participation

2.) as we enter the winter months = less participation

3.) I think they summed it up best in the movie "TED".... given enough time in American culture, people just stop giving a shit and the fact that a talking, walking, pot smoking teddy bear just stops to amaze people.. LOL!
