Going to take an introductory long range rifle class...need help with what to bring/purchase

Hope my questions aren't to naive but I've been saving like crazy and received as a gift an introductory long range rifle class at the Sig Sauer Academy. It's an introductory course but i'm told we will likely shoot up to 1000 yards on the 3rd day. We reserved one of their rifles, it's a .308 Winchester rifle and i'll be purchasing their ammunition.

I called the registrar and they sent me this list of things i should bring, however they didn't specify any specific brands/models etc.

Hoping you might be able to recommend some specific products to get me through the class. We live on a very limited income so i have to remain very fiscally responsible but don't want to get garbage that i'll hate using.

I'm sure i can scrounge up suitable clothing, hat, eyewear, ear muffs , sunscreen and rifle cleaning equipment.

That leaves me with:

• Spotting scope
• Rangefinder
• Field notebook and pencils
• Hydration system

Also, Is a hydration system of particular benefit over just having a regular water bottle?

The spotting scope and a range finder would not be on my must have list for class to take an introductory to precision rifle class.

bring a backpack to carry all your stuff in, it makes life easier.

Any water bottle will work, hell stop at a gas station and grab a gallon of water.
Field notebook and pencils, anything will work weather dependent, but to be safe grab a rite in the rain book.

If you're renting their rifle scope and ammo you should be all set. I would ask and verify they have bi-pods on their rentals and if they have a rear pinch bag.

Other than that go there to learn and see exactly what YOU need.

I'm very surprised they didn't mention a ballistic calculator (runs on your phone). Probably worth a call back to clarify that.

For my first class, the instructor suggested Strelok Pro. I've stayed with it - haven't found anything I like better.

EDIT: Others are saying, rightfully, to avoid buying expensive gear prior to the class. I totally agree. I suggested the ballistic calculator because it's cheap; repeating, it's worth a call to Sig to seek input/guidance.

Don’t buy a range finder or a spotting scope or really a ballistic calculator. For basic precision rifle your. It gonna use any of them.

I'll be honest with you, buying gear now most likely result in selling what you bought and buying something different once you find out what YOU like and are comfortable with. I would go to this class with the expectation of seeing what others are shooting as well as asking questions of your instructor and classmates about the pros and cons related to a particular piece of equipment and name-brand you may get down the road if you decide this is for you. In a class for the begining shooter they don't expect you to have the full gamete of gear, just some basics.

Go with the basics and have fun. Impact electronic ear muffs from Howard Leight are great for $50. Take note pad and pens. Your taking an $800 class, so I suspect the gun rental and ammo won't be cheap. I would at least consider buying my own 308 and a case or two of federal gold medal match ammo (~$200/case=200 rounds). An Rem 700 heavy barrel, swfa 10x scope, Harris 6-9 notched leg bipod, wouldn't be too expensive, relatively speaking. Just food for thought.

I'm going to agree with most of what's been said here, and disagree with some of it too.

As usual for this place, some of the responses you're getting have completely ignored what you said in your opening post and have substituted your input with the respondent's own biases and assumptions.

DO NOT waste your money on a spotting scope or range finder. Your shooting an introductory course. That means you will be shooting at known distances, which makes a range finder 100% unnecessary. That also means that the school instructors will have their own spotting scopes to help you along. Learning how to use a spotting scope to spot for other shooters and for your own wind estimation is an intermediate skill that likely won't be covered in depth during a basic class. Even if it is, you will find scopes available there for you to use/borrow.

DO NOT spend money on a rifle of your own yet. If you are a complete beginner to this aspect of riflery, wait until you have some basic knowledge under your belt before deciding what to spend money on. That's even MORE important when you are of limited means and don't have money to waste re-selling stuff that ends up being sub optimal because you didn't understand what you need/want yet. Your decision to use a school rifle is a very wise one.

The comments on a backpack, note taking supplies, and water are spot on. I don't know why gun schools use stupid, tacticool terms like "hydration system" when saying "bring plenty of water" gets the point across so much more fucking clearly.

I'm on the fence about buying a ballistics app for your phone. I seriously doubt you will need one for what you're going to do in a basic class. In fact, I know you won't need one. Personally, I don't even use them. I have dope cards made for broad temperature ranges where I live and make the hits I need. Those dope cards work 24/7 without batteries and in the pouring rain. Spotter - no, instructors should have spotters. If you have a pair of binoculars take them but don't buy a pair for the class. Borrow from a buddy if you can but they are not absolutely necessary

Rangefinder - no, Sig should have plenty of those around for you to use/try

Hydration - bottled water or Gaterade is good. Take some energy bars with you to take the hunger urges away in case you have them.

Notebook, pencils, cell phone for taking pictures of some of the lessons if they use a white-board

Most importantly...have fun.

See? Opinions abound, and all have pros and cons. 308Pirate and I have commented on a bunch of past advice-seeking posts. Most of the time we agree. Sometimes not quite so much - like this one. He doesn't use a ballistic app at all. I use one exclusively. Some people swear by their Kestrels. I've had a 5700 Elite in my hands, on loan, for a week now and I find it to be an unintuitive PITA. Glad I didn't spend $$$ on it. Here comes the real heresy: my optics are in MOA, not milrad. My mind has done MOA calculations for 50+ years and I ain't'a'gonna do no stinking mils - but I've steered newbies with no previous background to mils because that's the most common/preferred method of expressing elevation/windage in this sport.

Got to the class. Have fun. Learn. Chances are, if you pursue this mad addiction, you'll buy something, use it for a few months, and try something else. My first precision rifle - a Tikka T3X TAC A1 in 6.5CM - will be going up for sale soon. Not because there's anything wrong with it; it's a solid, reliable 0.5-0.6MOA performer with a variety of factory loads - but because I tried something I liked better.

BallisticsARC works great for me free to. But yeah ide say find a Harris or Harris knock off and rear bag as it sounds like their only requirements are sling so that may be all the loner rifle comes with. Rear bag that I still use to this day shooting prone.

@want2learn please DO NOT buy anything to put/use with the loaner rifle until you ask the staff at SIG Academy what is it that they provide with it and what you need to bring.

CALL THEM. That will do you much more good than well intentioned but potentially very wrong advice.

Like others have said. A Backpack and water, along with a few snacks are key. Call Sig and see if they recommend a ballastic app; if they do, then download it.

Go and have fun. Don’t stress on what gear “you don’t have”. Be open minded, listen, and apply what they are teaching and you will Learn something. You are only trying to leave a better shooter than when you arrived. You aren’t competing with the other folks there. There will be a cast of characters there; many of whom look like they are ready to deploy to The Middle East (Shemaghs included b/c apprently a hat doesn’t protect you from the sun in the U.S,), but can’t shoot their way out of a wet paper sack. Different strokes for different folks. Be courteous and don’t let their costumes and high dollar rifles intimidate you. It’s an inteo class. They are there for the same reason as you.

Good advice on what's REALLY needed has already been given.

I'd add: sunscreen, comfortable shoes, a small towel (to wipe sweat from your face).

Or perhaps it would sound cooler if I said, "UV ray blocking, sunburn prevention materials, suitable bipedal walking instruments, and perspiration absorbtion system."

Oh yeah.. dress head-to-toe with 5.11 garments! Just kidding.

Have FUN! It will be a ton of fun! But, fair warning... it's addictive!

Just signed up for a Sig Class a half hour ago...

Bring a good attitude.

Ive taken the three day PSR class you will love it.

You can bring nothing and have a great time.

When I took it everyone was provided a great data book that I still use.

Like I said they will supply everything but I brought

Rifle
Mat
Bags
Ammo
Notebook for class notes (they provide a pen)
Water
Hat
Weather appropriate clothes

Forget any of those they can provide it. Your car is always within short walking distance from the line so you can bring the kitchen sink if you want to.

Please feel free to PM if you have questions Ive taken lots of classes there.

If you bring your own rifle have a solid 100 yard zero and general knowledge (a JBM chart) of your drops out to 1000.

You will not need a spotter, rangefinder or hydration system more involved than a water bottle.

Literally if you go there empty handed they will fully outfit you. They have bipods on their SSSGs and will provide squeeze bags.

They use Sig SSG 3000 rifles and they shoot well. I think it had a Leupold on the ones I saw (MOA).

We didnt actually clean rifles so cleaning equipment was not used. As you are using there rifle maintenance is on them. Cant recall if they had guys that used their stuff do anything with it.

YOU WILL NEED NOTHING - Sig loves making new shooters out of neophytes.

If you even forget an item of clothing the proshop has anything you could need at 10% off because you are taking a class.

Bring your listening ears and an eagerness to learn. BE SAFE - they run a safe school but run the place as if adults attend - they dont safety Nazi you but they expect safety.

Note the waterproof Sig Data Book they provide. Its a write and erase product. Its fanatastic. Write on it in pencil. I can steer you toward a great data book cover that fits it perfectly.

First rifle is a Sig loaner as is the last rifle. Both those shooters flew in state from someplace down south with nothing and were provided everything including mats, bags, data book, you name it.

The green XM-3 with the can is an instructors rifle. That shooter had his bolt handle rip off and the instructor let him complete the class with his personal rifle.

I was a bit apprehensive as a novice, spending a lot of money to fly out, get a hotel and a car in addition to the class etc.

I'll pick up a backpack and some durable yet inexpensive pants. Not having to purchase and carry a bipod, tripod, mat, sling, cleaning equipment, spotting scope etc sure makes things easier. My better half has a travel mug...so i'll definitely bring along some extra coffee on the way to the range each day. I think NH has a lot of Dunkin Donuts so i should be golden.

I sure would appreciate the info on the book cover...sounds like that's something i will continue to use well after the course.

Now to find a good book on long range rifle shooting with a mil/mil scope (that's what i own).

Its a vacation area, not too far from the seacoast. Rates will go up during July.

Ive taken the PR-2 course. They give you a data book in that class also. I took my two data books and made them one. It really is a great piece of gear usings the MIRs writing paper. Its like a semi plastic that cleans with an eraser if pencil and 90 percent alcohol if an approved marker. Use staedler markers to ensure erasibility. With two books together you can keep probably up to a years worth of data than just go back and erase stuff at the beginning to get fresh info.

Range facilities for PSR are the only thing I ever gig them on. Down range target areas are great. Shooting platforms are always littered with brass and the 300 is pretty much a negative slope that can be kind of slidey for the shooter. The 1000 yard platform is tught if you have a full class and its rough as far as being graded. Sig puts alot more into their carbine/pistol areas. The PSR range is no slouch though just me being picky.

You will have a good time. Just take good notes in class, the instructors appreciate when students pay attention.

Get the alcohol bottle and holder so you can carry some 90% alcohol to erase the MIRs pages. Needs to be 90%. any tough erasings come clean with a Mr. Clean sponge and alcohol.

I am attending Defensive Rifle early May.

Be sure to wait on signing up for more classes until you can use a discount code after taking your first class.

They are pretty easy going with the discounts should you call them and ask "Hey I just signed up for one can you give me a discount now on a second?"

The discount used to be better. Id sign up for a cheap one day class than use the discount on a two or three day class and I think the savings was 20% or so.

Still its about $250/day for instruction and use of range - not a bad price.

There's sheer stupidity like this:

cm/100 scopes... some of you guys will have paid a pretty penny for a Zeiss or a Swarovski hunting scope which adjusts in centimeters per 100 meters. This type of scope will be a nightmare for folks who work in inches and yards... (like us here in America, at least for now... )... so I'd STRONGLY advise you not to bring such a scope to the class. You'll have far too much trouble with it for this kind of shooting.

And this, recommending a scope with a mildot reticle and MOA wind and elevation adjustments

Another great choice which can often be found for 200 dollars on sale is the Bushnell Elite 10X tactical scope

Thanks for the heads up! I’m definitely a novice when it comes to precision shooting. The rifle I have inbound will be the first scoped rifle I have ever shot and was looking for a training class near me to learn the fundamentals.

I’ll look around for other potential schools within a 6 hour drive of DC.

Use that video as a training aid of what not to do.

Speaking to another regards Sig last night I told him the best thing you can come away with in a introductory PSR course is the ability to build a solid position.

Those guys with crossed feet, angled positions and whatever fucked up shit going on is a mess.

If you get Dave Hinkell as an instructor at Sig he was clear in instructing how to get your "mass" behind the rifle. I relate it to having the line of the rifle follow the line of your spine as much as physically possible than getting the area of your body in 100 percent contact with the earth.

You paid for the course so ask to have your position critiqued. Listen intently how to build a position and do it consistently, ritual like, each time you shoot.

Getting the comb height of the stock is helpful to have critiqued by an observer. If you use a sig rifle the combs are adjustable. If you use a rifle without adjustment bring tape and padding to build the proper comb.

If you get position and rifle ergonomics right your money was well spent.

Id try to defend what is seen in that video by saying perhaps it was a class intended for "experienced shooters". The Sig Reach for 1000 classes are less about fundamentals more aimed at shooters wanting some data or to experience some distance. For that type of class instructors dont have alot of time to instruct in fundamentals..........but that comment about the scopes was so dumb I lost IQ points reading it.

No...I am a member of Granby. I had heard that they (SIG) had an incident where a car got hit by a stray and that they had closed the 1,000 yd range. I have never been to SIG but it is a lot shorter of a ride than where I usually go.

I think they will have some fun drills.

When they let you play they do shit like having the line shoot at a swinger and each guy has to fire as soon as the preceding gun fires and either hits it to the side you expect it to be on or you have to reacquire and do his work because he missed.

That and shooting small shit just to build up skills should make for a good day.

Not guaranteed they go to 1000 for skill builder though depends on ability of class and how quickly they go through drills Im guessing.

I looked at that but the description said 100-500 yard engagement. I shoot every week at 500 yards so wasn't too interested in that but if the opportunity to go longer is there, I may be interested. The reach for 1000 are fun also. They usually shoot 100, 300, 750 than 1000. Good time, real good if at 1000 you team up with someone to spot as the instructors time is spread among the class and its pretty much free fire zone once he assigns targets.

Thanks for the heads up! I’m definitely a novice when it comes to precision shooting. The rifle I have inbound will be the first scoped rifle I have ever shot and was looking for a training class near me to learn the fundamentals.

I’ll look around for other potential schools within a 6 hour drive of DC.

No...I am a member of Granby. I had heard that they (SIG) had an incident where a car got hit by a stray and that they had closed the 1,000 yd range. I have never been to SIG but it is a lot shorter of a ride than where I usually go.

I live close to Sig and have attended many classes there. The incident you are talking about did happen, but my understanding is that it was from a pistol bay that faces Hwy 101. Those bays were closed while baffles were added overhead. All the bays on Area 51 are open now, as far as I know.

As to the 1,000 yard range, last time I was there it was still pretty small and is surrounded by tall trees. It is fine for seeing if you can ring the steel, but it wasn't set-up for walking down and checking your hits. Sig had planned to put in a remote viewing camera in the impact zone, but I don't know if they ever did. All of that may have changed since I was last there.

I shot Area 51 last week....all was open.

1000 yard range works for what they do....its just a little Spartan.

My only complaint is the "tons" of brass that litter the area you eventually lie, kneel or sit on.

They need a machine to clean up and reclaim that shit more frequently.
