K-Bars Half-Face Blades enthusiasts thread

I see this thread pop up and thought I would contribute. HFB made this for me in ‘13 or ‘14. I carried it on a couple of deployments, sadly besides opening stuff it saw no real work. Shame too, it came to me dangerously sharp!

Got a nice junior a couple of drops ago to match my 'Hawk. And got a new book in from my buddy Jim! A good day in the mailbox.

BTW, Jim not only wrote the book... that's him during the 1980's coming into a drop zone near Berlin on the cover.

Another book worth reading!

Sirhr

@sirhrmechanic let us know how the book is. I just finished a long read and it’s time for a fresh start on a new one.
Actually, it's excellent. I read it as a manuscript.

It is NOT a deep academic book on the OSS. It was started as an Osprey "OSS for Dummies" book sort of thing. But then the publisher switched gears and expanded it a bit. So the way I would describe it is as a primer on the OSS and the SOE... and if you like what you read, it will give you a fantastic link into some of the great literature on the subject.

It was also written by a guy who BTDT and got all the T-shirts doing the same thing in the Cold War. So it's written from a 'guy behind enemy lines' Berlin SF operator during the height of the Cold War. So he knew how to dissect the stories.

Is it the most detailed book on the OSS and SOE ever? No. Is it a book that will totally whet your appetite for the whole history. Darn right!

BTW, all typos or errors in the book are my fault, not Jim's. I was one of the copy editors. So.... if I missed anything, it's on me. ;-) And I took a couple of photos in the book. So.... I am biased.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Will someone school me on these? I mean they are badass looking pieces, no doubt about it but there are a lot of good knife makers out there. Why does everyone want these so bad? Just curious. I wouldn’t mind having one myself but I’m not going to scour the internet or have bid wars every week to try and get one. Someone that turned me on to these days he has been trying to snag a certain one for years. That’s crazy.

You are correct with your assessment above. They have a very strong customer base that has grown and grown over the years. One of the way to look at these is through the lens of non-custom vs custom. You can get a badass HFB blade, non custom, that will do EVERYTHING and more you want it to for less than 400-500, easy day. These have no custom grips, no fancy blade finishes/stains, no rock work on the back of the spine, etc, just true utility tools.

But once you want one with fancy grips, exocit wood/bone, acid finishes, and/or certain hard to find models, that strong customer base will dramatically drive up the price/value of those.

I keep a breacher in my daily bag that i travel with. Dont use it much as i want that sucker razor sharp for when that emergency comes. Have a dj and cj in strategic places in the house. Have an older Emerson cqc7 in my pocket 24/7 that i use for cutting stuff. If I'm feeling real froggy i might lick peanut butter off it but no way if someone else is walking around the kitchen.

Looks like the Bots are still buying up everything. I'm about to give up on a custom. Refreshed the page and by the time you can even click on something and add it to your cart it's already gone. Not sure how people checkout in less then 5-10 seconds of them being on the site. Have one crow Jr in just production g10 black but doubt at this rate I'll ever see a custom. What a joke.

@MNTC

I’m with you most drops I don’t even look it’s not worth it. Today I did since there were supposed to be more blades, went for the giraffe bone Cav and before I could check out it was gone. Sold out before 3:01.

We will probably see these all on eBay for double the price again. Was trying for this one..

https://www.halffaceblades.com/coll...-stainless-lanyard-pin?variant=40975368028314 instantly scrolled down to it on first page.

Clicked it. Said sold out already. Immediately hit back, and everything else on the page was about sold out too. Less then a minute. Going to move on to other knives if this continues. Probably the 8th time in a row of doing this same thing for me. Sucks.

Yeah, it definitely sucks and I’ve basically given up for now. I’m not willing to just buy whatever I can get in my cart to hopefully swap or be one of the guys that sells at a premium later, and I have no desire to pay the ridiculously inflated second hand prices.

Unfortunately Andy and the guys at HFB just can’t keep up with demand. I don’t know if you’re in the FB group, but I think Andy said there are over 1500 people on any drop trying to get what like ~25 knives. Plus they are battling bots. Today’s drop actually included knives from last week where he canceled the order cause they were purchased from someone using a bot.

Thankfully, I was able to get a production CJ and a semi custom senator a year ago or so before all the craziness and I have a custom order in for a hawk just before they closed (which has been in for a year now). They do make beautiful customs though maybe one day they’ll be more readily available or if the custom order book opens again that’s an option

Lol, they're going to pop up for sale here too.
I would buy another or two or three, but I gave up on them for now. Definitely not going to pay other people profit on Andy's work. F' them, not HFB but the scalpers.

I actually checked out the page for a few minutes today and while I did not buy anything there were quite a few available for about 2 minutes for me. I was just testing the waters to see if I could see how much time I had. I don’t see how people check out so fast either. Pre-saved data maybe? I dunno. Seems to me like it should only allow one knife in a cart at a time. Either way, some of the designs are cool but there are way too many custom knife makers out there where there is no silly ness involved to have to deal with that mess.

I'm a big fan of semper sharp as well. They drop like HFB but much more manageable to score.

With all these drops you gotta eye ball the one you want from their announcement day before, only go after that one, computer running nothing else other than browser, fast connection, etc.
