Rifle Scopes Have this old J Unertl

Re: Have this old J Unertl

Sir,
It is a J. Unertl target type scope with external type mounts. It should also have a # on the little ring about 2.5" from the back of the scope. Normally on the top of the ring. Like 6 8 16 24 etc. That is the power. It is a fixed power scope. Mounts should be bare metal color. Aluminum. Most were not anadized. There is a good market for these scopes for rimfire shooters and some others. PM with pics or if you need more info. I see you say 9X. I have not seen one, but it could be I guess. More likely 8X with some paint missing from the #

Re: Have this old J Unertl

Thanks the info guys. I asked her( the owner) what's the highest number she sees on the ring around the fat part of the scope and she said it was 9. So 9x I'm guessing? I need to take another look at it.

Re: Have this old J Unertl

The USMC used x8 Unertl's on the 1903A1 rifle. These contract scopes are easy to spot - they have J Unertl, USMC Sniper and a 4 digit serial number towards the eyepiece. They have the 1 1/4" objective. They took less than 3000 of them.

They saw service in WW2, Korea on 1903 USMC rifles and into Vietnam on M70 rifles. They were replaced by the Redfield and Japanese made "Marine" scopes in the '60's on the M40

There are pictures of my original USMC scope at the start of the thread.

Current value on an original USMC x8 Unertl is around $5,000

However Unertl also made a whole range of commercial scopes of varying mag powers and with different objective diameters. The value of these is considerably less (as a quick search on EGay will show you). I suspect you have a commercial scope (looks like a larger objective than the 1 1'4" versions?)...Unertl also made 1", 1 1/2" and 2 " objectives
