I'm going to blame this one on Top Predator.

He made a comment in his post of the conversion of an airgun stock to 22lr stock.

Not long after reading his post on the AICS conversion
I ran into a section of heavy walled aluminum tubing at a garage sale.
Took it home and tossed it on the workbench for future use.
Later that week, while cleaning my cheap all weather squirrel rifle,
I figured out what to do with the aluminum tubing.

The squirrel rifle: Savage 64 FSS
( FSS stands for Flexible as heck Synthetic Stock

)

A few weeks of "trim a little, fit a little, assemble, disassemble, reassemble, repeat"
and you end up with a heavy metal platform for the Cooey actioned Savage 64.

Ain't no flexibility in that stock!

Wow that is unique!

I really dig the look of it, though not so fond of the thumb hole part of the stock. Would look better with a straight drop down part for the shoulder stock, and then an M16 "sniper" grip

But that is just me.




Very good work though, for creating something out of nothign! And as long as you like it who cares what other say !!

I think you will need to watch closely for torque under recoil with the HV loads.

Got the torque covered...

Recoil blocks both rear

and front

The vertical segments of the angle aluminum recoil blocks
lock the receiver in place, preventing rearward, left, right
and rotational movement. I really didn't want it to move.

Total weight including bipod and scope: 14.2 lbs.
It's a bench rifle obviously. Easy to pop the barrel and action
back into the "tupperware" stock for squirrel season.

wish i had machinery other than a drill and grinder so i can pull stuff like that off, bravo sir.

BTW i'm an ol' school head banger from the 80's, the title is what caught my attention immediately.

No high tech tools used Top.
Drill, grinder, belt sander, jigsaw, bastard file and sandpaper.
Hardest part was coming up with a way to attach the action to the tube.
Savage uses a proprietary thread for it's action screws.
Only 2 lengths, 3/4 and 1 inch #12-32 machine screws.

Drill holes, jigsaw to cut slots, hand file to finish.

excellent job with no special machinery - though it's a PIA & time consuming doing stuff the caveman way.

i got an oppurtunity to weigh the CZ 455 varmint and the airsoft stock with bipod and optic, 13lbs 10 oz., so i can relate to the heaviness, but stability of your rig.

guess we'll have to make a cart to carry them in, or install a set of those built in luggage wheels.

Spent a few trips to the range adjusting and tuning.
With the barrel free floated, the stainless 64 pencil barrel
was whipping and creating vertical patterns about 3/4 inch wide
and 2 inches tall. So I decided to get a firm grip on the situation.

Fabricated 2 barrel clamps to control the movement.

Shooting at 50 yards in a serious crosswind for testing.

Thought about it for a while, took the tools
on the next visit to the range.

Played with clamp tension to see the effects.

Groups 1 through 5 were adjustments to the muzzle clamp.
Groups 6 through 10 adjusted the mid barrel clamp.
Group 11 overtightened the mid barrel, created a spread.
12 through 14 were with the muzzle locked down hard,
with the mid barrel clamp same tension as group 10.

So much for the free floated barrel theory of rimfire accuracy.
Sometimes you just have to lock that sucker down to get the job done.

The whole project was to understand how stock flex and barrel movement
affect accuracy. Materials cost less than 25 bucks and I had the spare time.
Stock is white pine with a few coats of rattle can black.
Shape was obtained by matching the natural incline of my grip
and the space needed to fit around the ball of my thumb.
Clamps are a simple solution for testing the accuracy
of the free floated barrel method over a fully bedded barrel.
I was also interested in where the best results would be obtained
in the placement of the barrel cradles. Put about a brick of CCI SV
downrange while trying shims in different spots along the barrel.
Muzzle and midpoint provided the best results, but the cradles
didn't prevent the upward whip, so I added the hose clamps.
Looks ridiculous on the bench, but the results at the target aren't.
I can trim the excess strap off the clamps when I'm done testing,
or I can try to cobble together a better clamping method.

Total weight with a full magazine, scope, bipod and clamps is 14.4 lbs.

It ain't got a smoker, but that heavy metal tube can have anything you want
attached to it, using the handyman's all purpose fastener...duct tape.
