Need some input on selecting first bolt rig with limitations.

Here's the deal, I got a bunch-o Dick's gift cards for christmas, and I'm wanting my first bolt gun. Been shooting AR's, and long range with my SPR, but new to the whole long range game.

Been watching the Magpul video, and plan on ordering the training here soon, but where to start.

I've got it narrowed down to a Savage. Now the model I'm unsure what would be a better platform. I'm between a 10fcp-k or the McMillan.

It may be vanity, but I really want a threaded fluted barrel. I am planning on getting a suppressor sometime in the future so the that would be ideal.

That said I also want a good stock, so the McMillan would be Ideal, but I'm worried about adjustment. Cheek weld, and LOP, as I don't have one to play with I just don't know. If I got the 10K, I would almost certainly put it in an XLR chassis so it would be adjustable, but a little wait time on getting the stock.

Both have magazines, so McMillan would get some darkeagle made 10rnders, or the 10K would get AI with the XLR. I'm thinking with the giftcards, the cost would be a push on both of them, so which should I go for stock or barreled action?

I've got a SS 5-20 sitting on my SPR now in a larue mount, and learning with yall's help on how to use it, so optics are covered. Just can't make up my mind on the last bit.

Thanks
Marty

I would buy the mcmillian and be done with it the a-5 is a great stock and there are aftermarked cheek risers available, or you could send it back to McMillian and get them to put stuff on it.

Just my $.02

call savage and get the new LRP in the A5 and then send that to McM to get the goodies. have them put a fluted SR barrel on it and your done.

or buy a stevens and go that route building your gun as you go with the exact components you want. pick a caliber and barrel, trigger, stock. manners, McM, XLR, HS - take your pick.

Re: Help me spend my christmas money to buy a Savage

I'd like to do it the way axeman suggested, but my problem is I've got 400.00 in Dick's gift cards, and there isn't anything else there that I want to buy, so that 400 takes a lot off the initial price.
The dude at Dick's said I could order anything I wanted out of the catalog they had on the counter, but didn't know of any of the special ones, like the 5r barreled ones and such. I asked if they ordered through a distributor he said yes, so I told him I had the item #19055, and such but he said he could only order the stuff printed, in the book.
Is there a way to get savage to send the stuff to them?

Make sure you know where the bolt release is. I bought a 10-fcpk and it blew me away out of the box. But you are more limited with it because of the bottom release - you can't use a CDI style trigger guard for AI style mags (unless something new has come along. If so someone please let me know).

With the top bolt release you're pretty much unlimited these days.

jeff has a fix for the bottom bolt release now, its a billet extension for the bolt release

For real? I need to get in touch with him. I guess it has been over a year since I called him and talked about my Savage.

Thanks for the info - this changes everything!

All the factory rifles over 308 Winnie have barrels too short to get maximum velocity from the large cartridges.
Fluting a barrel is cool but not a good idea if you want maximum accuracy.

Good job confusing a new shooter with your opinion.

1. We build rifles we use and dont just sit around on a bench all day. This means they have to be light and as short as possible.

2. I have a fluted barrel that will give most guns a run for thier money. Flutting if done properly like any other option does not deter accuracy.

Strong work

Re: Help me spend my christmas money to buy a Savage

I agree, if you want a light, reasonable accurate rifle. (The OP really didn't say.)

You want to shoot 2000 yards at whatever, long barrels, unfluted do better. Fluting just introduces another variable and unknown stresses on a barrel. It does aid cooling a bit in rapid fire.

And no, most of my shooting is off a BiPod in country where you could shoot 5 miles if you wished to.

I doubt any of you own both a 24" barrel AND 34" barrel 338 RUM and have put them both on a chronograph or drop tested them to 1000 yards. There is a very large difference.

Within his budget, I suppose a 308 "tactical" rifle would be just the ticket.

Re: Help me spend my christmas money to buy a Savage

Yep 308 tactical is exactly what I'm looking for.

I have an AR I built up with a 18" WOA barrel, as an SPR. That's what I'm using right now to get in the precision game. My club only goes out to 600yrds, so that is what I'm gonna start with. I'd like to try some Ftr matches. I don't know of a 1000+ range in my side of TN, so I'm pretty limited.

I have a couple bolt deer guns Win70 308, and Ruger M77 300win mag, but am unsure if these would serve the purpose.
I got in on the Black Friday SWFA deal, and am working on learning how to use a quality scope, the others where Simmons. Still haven't got the whole parallax issues worked out, but that's the fun of learning.

I feel a bolt gun may slow me down and help me think about the shot instead of just flinging lead with my AR. May be off base there, but that's what I think.
I watched the Magpul videos yesterday, and they gave me a lot of material to process, and I plan on ordering the course here too.

Thanks everyone for there time in helping me get set up.
