I'm looking for opinions on a new scope for my Tikka T3 Varmint 223. The rifle is going to be used for punching paper out to 300 yards 90% of the time with the occasional chuck hunt at a buddies parents dairy farm. I'm waffling between a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 and a Nikon Monarch 5-20x44.

Both have 95% glass, side focus and BDC recticles. They both have similar power ranges. The Vortex has a 30mm tube and the Nikon a 1". The price for the Viper is $20 less than the Nikon.

Any help making a decision would be appreciated.

I have a SWFA 5-20X on my T3 Varmint, using Aadland medium rings. The fit is perfect and the performance and functionality is divine.

But, if that isn't your cup o' tea...then yeah, the Vortex is the better choice of the two you list.

I vote for the Vortex It is what I use on my 527 .223 and I run it back and forth from 100 - 600. Great scope for the money, although I would never advise anyone to buy a BDC reticle. I run the mil dot reticle and I believe cameraland has the vplex on sale for around 200 right now.

I don't know if this matters to you, but the T3 Varmint comes with 1" scope rings. If you need to use any other size scope rings you'll have to get a base as well as the rings.
