I have a remington 700 sps varmint in .308 with a 26 inch barrel 1:10 RH twist. I can not find a definitive answer to the question what is the best grain weight? For that long of a barrel with that twist?

Are you sure it's 1:10 twist? 26" SPS Varmints in .308 typically have 1:12 twist barrels. That being said Federal .308 Federal Gold Medal Match 168 gr SMK is never a wrong choice. It performs very well out to 600 yards and if your rifle doesn't shoot that into a sub-MOA group at 100 yards it's broken. If and when you want to push out a little farther start exploring the heavier 175-185gr options.

There's no real "best", but like the guy above said, for a 1-10, a 168 through 180 should be fine. The fact that you have a 26in barrel doesnt change anything. I shot 155s up to 175s through my 1-10. It did best with 168s but had issues after 900 yards (20 inch barrel).

The only way to find the “best” load is to try them all. And most people dont have time for that. Every rifle is a little bit differet. The best thing you can do is to try some different ammo and see what shoots best in your rifle. FGMM 168s and 175 are a good start. There is also prime ammo and hornady supperformance just to name a few.

To be honest I'm not sure I did the old rod down the barrel mark it and pull it out and then measure the distance I did it about 20 times and actually averaged 12". I then called remington the day after and gave them the SN and they said it was a 1:10 twist so not sure what yo go with, I guess I'll try what most of you are mentioning and see how it goes I've just read and heard about people saying 30i bullets will tumble and become inaccurate part 600 yards but people use them to hit 1000 yds so I just wanted to have the best bullet possible

I bought 2 boxes of hornady 150 grains.. am o waiting my time with them?

No. Hornady factory match, precision hunter, or even the BTHP American Gunner loads can shoot just as good or better than FGMM. Try a box of each and see what the rifle likes.

If you got 150gr spire points... not in the same league as match ammo but it may still shoot well.

Shooting up to 175s I don't think you will ever notice a difference. My 1 in 12 SPS varmint would stabilize the 208 a ams.

Remington 308s are a 12 twist except for their 5r rifles which are an 11.25 twist.

Like everyone said, an match ammo by Federal, Hornady, Blackhills, Prime up to ~180 grains should work.

I have a Remington 700 PCR in 308 with a 1:10 twist. I have been shooting my standard pet 308 168 grain load out of it and it shoots great out to 700 yards. I haven’t been able to get to a range with more distance yet but I suspect it will shot well out to 1000.

I also have an SPS Varmint with 1-12 x 26" barrel and it has been easy to find sub MOA loads with everything from 155 scenars and custom comps up to 190 MK and custom comps.
The best accuracy I was able to get was with the 168mk and 168amax but ended up sticking with the 178amax at 2650fps since it would consistently print .500 - .625" MOA 5 shot groups and was better in the wind than the lighter bullets without having to push them very hard.

The 190 custom comps were still getting MOA or better even at anemic velocities with light loads.

You were all right I called remington back to verify and the guy told me it was a 1:12 twist he said the guy I talked to prior was probably giving me information for rifles they make today. This guy actually looked up the serial number and looked in the archives to see what they were using when my particular barrel was manufactured thanks all for the help and happy shooting!!

My 700 tactical .308 is a 1:10, eats everything with reasonable accuracy. It loves 168smk over IMR 4895, but will happily print small groups with fgmm, and hornady factory loaded ammo

Remington's website still shows the 26" 700 SPS Varmint with a 1-12 I had that rifle and it use to love Hornady 168AMAXs.
