Help with Choate Tactical on Savage 10fp

Fellas I just got in the Choate tactical stock and tried to put it on my savage 10fp. I'm having a few issues one is cosmetic. The rear tang has a 1/16 to 1/8 gap between it and the stock, is this normal? Then more importantly after I tighten the action screws down I CAN NOT pull the trigger to fire the rifle. I have an older 10fp pre-accutrigger and have the 4.275 spacing which is what the invoice said the stock is for. For you guys that have this stock did you have to trim the stock in any way for proper fitment and trigger function. I can see where I can take some material off the stock for the trigger to work but as far as getting the tang to sit, I think I may have to shave a little off the aluminum bedding blocks, which right now does not appeal to me. I got it from midway should I call them on the morn or contact Choate? Or should I just get out the dremel and go to town? BTW its a .223 not .308

Don't cut the bedding blocks. Use bedding compound to build
up the tang area instead.

On a Savage you want the tang to float freely. DON'T build up the area under the tang. Big mistake.

all signs point to floating in my research. you could lessen the gap with epoxy if it bothers you. but you would need to paint as the expoxy is grey

I contacted the folks at Choate and they were more than willing to send me another one 2nd day. I told them that I could try to dremel off what I thought to be the problem to save them pickup and return shipping. They said go ahead and it wouldn't affect my warranty. I tried and the trigger still was binding so I'm just going to go ahead and return it. So +1 for Choates customer service.

I had the same problem with my choate tactical stock.

First, it has been advised by nearly all of the Savage experts on the Savage forums that the rear tang should be floated. Basically, don't bed past the trigger and leave it free floating from the trigger rearward.

2nd, I had to trim my Choate in a couple of places for the trigger to function freely. I'll have to go back through my notes and pictures but I think it was at the very back of the stock, behind the trigger. Under the tang. This area was hitting the rear portion of the trigger, near where you adjust the accutrigger. I guess I should mention, I had an Accutrigger in mine. I dremeled it out a little and it fixed it. It was so close that if you loosened the rear action screw and left the rear of the action loose, the trigger would work properly. If you tightened it down, it would lock.

I also used epoxy to fill and smooth the mold lines in the rear of the stock tang area. These were absolutely horrible in my mind. I should have called Choate but I figured I would just try fixing it myself. It turned out nice. I later sold the stock but while I had it, I liked it.

I'll see if I can dig up the pictures of it.

I recently bought one of these stocks for a pre-accutrigger 10FP and came across the same issues.

I milled the rear V a bit to allow the tang to sit closer to the stock, then had to mill a small plastic area in front of the trigger to keep it from binding.

The Tang on my rifle is still free floating, and I will skim bed the rear V.

Now if I can only find a way to shave some of the bulk off the palm swell...
