Rifle Scopes Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

Ok, i just got a Remington 700 LTR (Light Tactical Rifle) and a Leupold Mark IV. I mounted it and took it to the range to sight it in (100yds). I would sight it in then it would shoot off the bullseye. I went through 3 boxes of bullets trying to figure it out. Once i left i went to the store and bought a bore sight. I then sighted it in at 100yds with the bore sight without using bullets afterwards and one i got the rifle out of the case in the morning the zero was off again. So i tred taking the scope of and tightening everything. I did this and rezeroed it with the bore sight. And guess what i did later...i put the laser sight back in the barrel after a couple hours of my rifle sitting in the case and the zero was off AGAIN. Any advice!?!?!?!? please send me a private msg. I don't not want to be able to find this forum again if anyone answers it
Thankyou
Austin

<span style="font-weight: bold">"Any advice!?!?!?!? please send me a private msg. I don't not want to be able to find this forum again if anyone answers it"</span> WTF?

The first thing you have to tell us is What scope base and rings are you using. Did you skim your scope base? Did you use locktite on all of your scope base and scope ring screws? Did you use a torque wrench for tightening? That will help us.

BTW, everytime you look at the boresight laser dot at different distances, the crosshairs will be in a different orientation. Ditance matters with borescopes in relation to your crosshairs.

BTW, What on earth made you decide on futureUSMCsniper as your user name and then make this your first post? Look up "irony" in the dictionary.

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

i dont have the stuff with me right now im on a friends computer, but i can tell you i used 30mm rings and did not use locktite on anything. I used an allen wrench for tightening.
BTW..dont have to be an asshole
BTW..thanks

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

Austin,

Take a chill.

The first wtf was copied from your own words!

The rest were yours!

You want these guy's to help?

May find you need a little thicker skin, or see what magua had to say.

There is a lot of info here, but may need to look for it.

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

It could be an issue with over or under tightening you rings or base. Make sure the base is mounted on the rifle tight, I forget the in/pounds needed but you'll mount that tight-tight and you can use loctite, make sure the rings are mounted to the base good and tight. When toghtening the rings on the scope they don't have to iron-man tight. they should be no tighter than you can make them only using two fingers on the screw driver or using the short end of an allen wrench. It would help to know the brand of the rings as it's different for Warne rings than Burris XTR's for instance.

If you overtighten your rings it can whack out the internal of the scope, not to mention leaving marks on the scope or in extreme cases bending the scope or cracking a lens. Don't ask me how I know.

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

"I need help" but I can't:
learn how to click on "my posts" to find this one
RTFI that came with the scope and rings
learn how to post pictures at photobucket
tell you what kind of rings and base I have

hmm...maybe there are folks who should not have access to dangerous devices!

I was unaware Nancy Pelosi had any wanna be Marine red headed step children

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

Ok, I think you have answered your own question in your first post. Each time it changes when you put the weapon back in the case...correct? When the rifle settles down the turrets could be changing from the padding depending on the case you have. Just a thought.

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

Are you resetting your turrets to "0" when you are done zeroing the rifle? Are you checking that the turrets are dialed to zero before you shoot the next time?

When you installed your scope and rings did you make sure the scope was level and torqued the screws to spec WITH A TORQUE WRENCH?

Are you an experienced shooter?

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

He has got to be LHAO seeing that people are actually trying to help him, given that he is refusing to provide the most basic info. Such as there is a Mk 4 with caps, so putting it in the case could not move the knob(s).
DNFTT!

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

Do you know about the different types of Loctite?
What Kind/Color do you have?
It does matter.

You have posted a question here, because you do not know.

Early answer was to post pic.

You say you can not do, but have not learned!

This requires some reading, and learning on your part, from those trying to teach you!

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

O/P, did you achieve 'Expert' classification with that Daisy Red Ryder before you progressed to a real rifle?

This isn't a hobby for unsupervised young 'uns. Get an adult to help you. An adult who really knows about firearms and how to shoot them. Take your stuff to the local range and politely approach -- while your stuff is still strapped to your bicycle (sorry) -- the grown man with the most gear on his bench. Not guns, gear. Chances are he'll have a clue, and you will be headed in the right direction.

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

hey. you dont have to be an asshole like every other person on this forum. just because im having trouble keeping my shit sighted in doesn't mean i don't know how to shoot. yall act like you have to know EVERYTHING about about anything that has to do with rifles to be able to shoot guns. i have four other rifles and i have no trouble with them and im an excellent shot with them. so get off my dick with yalls immature bullshit and just get to the point on helping me or just don't say anything...PLEASE!!!!

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

Welcome to the "Hide". A little graciousness will go a long way here. Don't get into a pissing match with the people you are wanting help from. It just doesn't work. Think of this experience like boot camp. Take your knocks and move on.

As to your original question: you have not provided us with enough info to adequately answer your question. We know nothing about your prior experience shooting. Learn how to post pictures here. You need an image hosting site to first upload your picture to, then post a link in your post. I prefer ImageShack to Photobucket, but that is a personal preference. Here's a link:

There are a lot of different things that can cause your problem. You have not told us what ammunition you were using. Was it match-grade, hand loads, cheap factory, mil surplus? Do you have the paralax set right on your scope? Are your rings torqued to proper spec? (this is very important) Are your bases on tight? Did you paint your rifle prior to mounting your scope? etc, etc.

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

Quick question. How much movement in POI (point of impact) are you getting? Do you have any contact points in the barrel channel of the stock? Good rings or bargain rings? Feel free to shoot me an IM if you wish.

Later
Rob

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

MC sniper.

As others have pointed out you really need to post pics.

Here is a checklist off the top of my head.

1. Check all screws tightness. Includes scope mount and rings. If you have to take the rings off and begin anew. You may want to consider lapping your rings.

2. Check your barrel to insure water or other foreign material is not present.

3. Make sure your allen set screw is tightened securely.

4. make sure all ammo is out of the same lot number.

5. make sure rings are not contacting bell housing, objective or eyepiece tube.

6. try using another scope or a vise to eliminate the scope or the rifle being the problem.

7. SEND IT ALL TO ME YOU FOR FREE YOU DON'T NEED THE HEADACHE!!

Re: Help with Keeping my zero.....please help me

have you tried cleaning your rifle? tried difrent brands of amunition? developed a flinch? checked the stock screws?

I went through 4 difrent brands of scopes before I found one that would hold a zero on my ruger M77 MKII in 7mm rem mag but you should not have an issue with a leupold.

just because your bore sighter says your zero is off does not mean your scope is not zeroed. bore sighters are junk and ive never had a rifle even hitting paper after being bore sighted.

hope I could help.

First, read the instructions that came with your scope and act accordingly. If you bought your scope used, download instructions.

Your bore sighting device could get you a different reading every time you use it, they're only marginally useful; and, with a bolt gun, not at all necessary, since you can remove the bolt and eyeball the direction the rifle is pointed-to do that just be sure the rifle is controlled from a steady support.

I don't have the time right now to detail how to zero a rifle, but I will tell you once you know how to do it, it can be easily done with one shot, perhaps with another to confirm.
