So a couple weeks ago I was finishing a tile job and the lady who it is for had a friend over to eyeball the work.

Turns out she left the NTSB just about a year ago to do investigations in the oil and gas world after 20 yrs.

We of course start talking and I find out that she had worked the investigation of a crash that claimed the life of a guy I had flown with a lot and really liked working with, who died in 2020 in a midair.

Oh the days of Beavers on floats.

I believe 2019 or 20 Oshkosh departure.

Can someone tell me a few things about this?
What make/model was the blue?
Same for the bigger plane
And how does something like that happen?
And what happened to the pilot of blue, other than shat their drawers?

The "weed eater" is a TBM Avenger.
The "weed"...not sure. Don't know much else other than Oshkosh departure day seems a bit crazy. (Never been) As a kid I was involved with a Hawker Sea Fury race plane for Reno. (Tagging along with Dad) I remember sitting in the cockpit wondering how the hell you could taxi that thing because you couldn't see anything in front of you. I imagine the TBM isn't alot better.

RV-6. And yep, the only way to know what's in front of a taildragger is to swing that nose out of the way and take a look every few seconds. The passenger in the RV was killed, but not the pilot.

Got about 130 hours in these (flight school)

Then the fun began. My next 1300-ish were in these puppies. Never had more fun flying! Took mine to Desert Storm.

Closed out my career flying these pigs (~1400 hours) as a maintenance test pilot. Hated them with a passion. After retiring in 2005 I was diagnosed with sleep apnea so that killed any further possibilities.

Last 1/3 of the first paragraph. My interpretation is you’re allowed an overhead break at 3500 MSL. I could be reading it wrong though.

As a ”former chemtrail spreader” I would have thought you’d remember the switch configuration. Maybe your certificate holder didn’t pay for the same options as mine.

Oh yes, they started the trend . The tail number I flew in DS was 66-15352, so a 1966 model....it actually had several patched bullet holes on the right side of the cockpit from Vietnam

Don’t have my PPL, but have about 60 or so hours in C-150’s & 172s. My buddy was a CFI working on his hours to get his ATP endorsement, so he’d always call me up to go fly. We flew all around the PNW and he’d sign my logbook. Those 100 dollar hamburgers & milkshakes at airport cafes were priceless.

I got to meet Don Sheldon’s daughter in Talkeetna AK after he passed.
She was in town, and was working in the TV world in Power Rangers at the time if my old dad brain serves me.
Spent many a time on the Ruth near that hut behind that Beaver!!
Including helping an A&P repair a wheel/ski set up on a turbine Otter one fine afternoon.
Great memories.

Also got to spend some time around Cliff Hudson, though his dementia was bad at the time.
If you asked him about an old story, he could tell it like it just happened though.

Ah, yes... I see the cowl exhaust now... didn't notice it at first behind the ladder

ETA: looking closer, the landing gear doesn't look right for a T6, and I don't think I've ever seen one with a 3-bladed prop... willing to learn though...

That was my first time up on the Ruth and couldn’t have asked for a nicer day!! The Alaska range will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thanks for sharing!!

Plugged in overnight and she lit right off this morning at 20 degrees. However, the cockpit was plenty cool. I have the newer muffler mod which is supposed to help but your hip and back get chilly. Forgot to tape over the fresh air inlets which didn’t help. Couple of crosswind take offs and landings, a quick tour over our AO, and done with a whopping 0.6 on the tach.
