Gunsmithing How do you store your removeable pilots?

Re: How do you store your removeable pilots?

We use the Durham plastic dividing boxes like Dave mentioned. They mike a nice metal enclosure that you can screw to the wall and then five of the plastic boxes slide into that. They are kind of pricy but work real well.

This is kind of what I was thinking.

I don't see any sizes wrote down for each pilot size. How do you keep track of individual sizes or do you care about the sizes?

Yes, I am new to the details of this field. But what are these pilots used for exactly?

Thanks for appeasing my ignorance.

Gun barrels can vary in dimension. Not a bad thing. One barrel maker has a pet dimension that another may not subscribe to. It can also have to do with how the barrel is made. Cut/Button/Hammer forged, etc.

A floating pilot allows the smith to fit the pilot to the individual barrel. The idea being to ensure the tool cuts on the same exact center as the hole.

They get used in other places, but the bulk of it lies in that.

Hope this helped.

I have a piece of paper with an inventory of the sizes and locations, but they are all in order from small to large so I don't really care what specific size I am using as I pick the size by the feel of the fit.
I made a set of rods that I can install a pilot and slide it 4" down the bore to feel what the fit will be like when I reach final depth.
This gets you past tha bell mouthed area sometimes left from lapping.
