I'm empathic to the lower class who got blitzed by these events. The waitress who lost all three jobs in one week and can't make payments on her 2006 Grand Prix does not need another kick in the pants. Anyone exploiting that situation deserves a solid beat-down, or at least to receive a valid threat of one if the behavior does not cease.
I have trouble digging up the same emotion for someone making a low-six-figure wage that decided to lever up with every bit of debt the bank would loan so that he could buy a ridiculously large house and fill it with toys. I spent the last several years paying down the mortgage, avoiding new debt, and accumulating some modest savings, because I learned lessons from the last downturn. If one made different choices that puts them into a position that now favors me, well, those are the breaks. Maybe the wife is gonna get a new-to-her car in the next few months. Maybe if things get really bad, the family is gonna get an RV so we don't have to rough it with a van and tents. Maybe we'll get a SxS for playing around in the woods. Maybe I'll find a good deal on a gun I've wanted but couldn't justify.
Or maybe this thing blows over by Easter and people go right back to 40% debt-to-income ratios like nothing ever happened, and I go back to looking poor.

On a firearms sales page, person had ammo listed for an extremely high price. He received 5 emails calling him a gouger.
That person deleted that ad, and then listed the same ammo with the same picture, on the same site, in the same city. He listed it for half of what it was worth when originally purchased on sale.

He emailed each one back and asked if his price was to high, knowing full well it was underpriced by 50% under normal market conditions. Not a single person told him his ammo was underpriced and he was losing money. They all wanted to buy it now!

There's no doubt a difference b/t smart debt and dumb debt. I don't believe anyone here is talking about the former. It's the guy who impulse buys items they can do without for no other reason than lack of discipline.

Remember one thing. If EVERYONE were successful then our society wouldn't work. I'm not wealthy, and I'm not "poor", but I don't look down on anyone working any low paying job. Some make poor choices, others can't do anything else. What would life be like of everyone was a successful CEO or "rich guy"?
Nobody is forced to sell cheap. I have been know to tell uninformed people (widows eg) the real value of an item so not to cheat someone, however the other side of the coin is to help people out by buying their stuff. The other option for them is a pawn shop who I assume treats them well...
I wouldn’t go quite that far as I believe it has it’s place even though it seems like a waste sometimes.
However, watching human nature as it is, is really something.

I’ve spent the past 14 years paying off all my youthful stupidity/student loans and putting my family in a decent financial position. It wasn’t fun, and in hindsight bankruptcy would’ve been the smarter financial move (although I’m too prideful to do that unless in true dire straits). I’m certainly not immune to everything going on, but I’ve tried to get to a place where we could survive on one income if we had to. We moved to an expensive place 3.5 years ago and bought a home (now on a 15 year mortgage), but I think we’re still capable of scratching by on one income. I was going to write a check and pay off the wife’s suv this month, but with everything going on I’ve been selling off extra guns and putting as much in the emergency fund as possible just in case.
I feel bad for those who can’t get it together and get ahead. Some of it is circumstance and lack of opportunities, but I believe most of it is people who aren’t willing to not have the latest gadget or toy on credit. Everyone seems to have a smart phone plan, cable TV, designer clothes, new expensive shit, etc with most of it being on credit. I talk to people all the time who are making $50K per year and are driving a $50K truck that they use to tow their boat or quads. We need to add Dave Ramsey to the high school curriculum nationwide.
The forced shutting down of the economy is brutal on those service workers who make $12-15 per hour and now have nothing. I’m just starting to see the transportation related businesses I work with laying people off. Maybe the $2T waste of a stimulus plan will help these folks out or convince their companies to keep them on to weather the storm. If this work stoppage goes past mid May we’re in a world of shit.

This is an incredible event, I have bought and sold a metric shit ton of items in the past weeks. In my opinion the hard selling comes after the guberment checks have been spent/lootin and shootin becomes the norm.

I learned my financial lessons and lived like a shrew for 4 years after my divorce to rathole enough money to buy a house (plan was outright, but the market dictated otherwise). Still on a 30 year, but paying up to 50% extra to make it done and gone in 18. I could afford a 15, but if my life went sideways, I wanted the cushion.
Still ratholeing money for situations just like this. I have 6 months salary saved up for emergencies and the target is 1 year - Unemployment, Household repairs, vehicle repairs...If I want a thing, it gets a modified budget to get it, without touching my squirrel fund.
People that buy the Teslas, $80k trucks then dump another $20k in lifting and tricking it out, a quad, toyhauler and all manner of other recreational crap....well that was their choice. I did not force them to leverage themselves to the max. You can be a consumer or an educated consumer. There is a difference.
The non-essential classified workers that got stuck at home on this BS pandemic scare, living paycheck to paycheck in a rental they can barely afford just above section 8 housing trying to make ends meet, I feel for them but again, everyone has a choice to either better themselves or make do. Back in Jan 2009, a co-worker and I had very little to do (we worked as engineers in the auto industry and everything had ground to a halt), so we spent some free time as any auto enthusiast should - surfing eBay Motors. The deals were amazing - three-year-old Corvette Z06s for $25k, year-old diesel HD pickups for $30k, stuff like that. And those were the asking prices; actual transaction prices may have been much lower. In hindsight, I wish I'd had recorded some of the prices as a firm reminder of what sort of value can be found when highly-leveraged people have their priorities reorganized in an involuntary manner.
I didn't have the cash on hand to take advantage of the deals back then, since my wife and I picked an interesting time to remodel our house. And I probably won't be buying any Raptors or Corvettes this time around because I've got some different priorities at this point (a new-ish vehicle for the wife, commercial property for my business, etc.), but I'll keep an open mind as deals become available.

I have worked my ass off for 47 years and was designated Critical Infrastructure then Covid hit and my boss/Corporation tossed hundreds to the wolves to get below the 500 employee limit for federal assistance which they lapped up like bitches when they dumped employees like excess baggage. They got millions i loans they don't have to pay back because they dumped faithful and hard working employees so they could cheat The System.
I can't even get a federal agency to take my statement to file a complaint of cheating, no lawyer will touch it (God knows why), and my Representative will not return my emails nor my phone calls.

I refied in February at 3.00% on a 15 year. I saw rates advertised at 2.571% on 15 today, I might end up refinancing again.
