How many running Non DBM by choice? Upgrades?

I have a 300WM PSS project in the works and I hate to say I'm leaning towards a traditional BDL set up.

Seems like everybody is running DBM set up or they are saving up to upgrade to one.

So out of curiosity who is running a non DBM by choice?

Certainly plan to upgrade to something beefier than the pot metal OEM so other than Badger what are some others that I should consider. Any upgrades to springs or followers?

Last question on this would be is there any way to extend the capacity a round or two? Recall looking at an M40A3 tech manual and if memory serves me correctly they modify the follower to get one more round in there anybody know how to do this? I considered an extedned magazine box but they all look very cheap and flimsy, not opposed to it but it would have to be one of good quality.

In most cases I like internal blind magazines. DBM has it's place but for the most part it is far from necessary. The only reason I picked Seekins BDM setup on my 338 LM was so I could have the extra magazine length.

For my next couple of bolt rifles I'm going back to a more traditional magazine configuration. Simply because I don't need DBM for my bolt actions. However if I competed in competitions it might be a different story.

I used the Armstech magazine extension for awhile and had zero problems with it.

You can trim the stamped follower ears down and can fit 5 under the closed bolt. This would give you 6 with one in the chamber.

all blind mags here. dont like the height on the large cap mags, hate to leave the mag at home, or at the range etc..

generally i shoot LR w a spotter, my job is easy as the trigger monkey, one is to simply keep the gun fed. wont shoot a comp unless spotters are allowed

I too have a beautiful blind mag custom rifle and would not hesitate to have another. Honestly, I commonly single feed rounds even when I at the range so mag configuration is a non issue.

Looks like Williams offers what I assume to be a drop in fit unit for HS stocks.

The rifle im building now is going to have the traditional bdl... Im replacing the peice of crap stock bottom metal with a williams bottom metal

what stock did you install the williams in? How "drop in" was it?

Take a look at the PTG tactical FP he is supplying the ARMY with them very nice and robust.They are water jetted from a solid billet of steel and very reasonable at around $130.Also on the higher capacity you won't get 5 rds out of a magnum.Three plus one is plenty those are big heavy rds to be over cramming the mag box.If you feel you need a longer OAL you can have a Wyatts mag box added.

I think your reffering to non magnum calibers.

Its harder to singe round feed a DBM rifle than a standard box mag. I often do alot of single round feeding and the mag feed lips often put the round slightly off center and end up jamming the round before closing.

I personally have never encountered that problem, and Ive reliably top fed my DBM on the clock more than a couple times.

The DBM definately has a place IMO. MOST comp rifles that Ive seen run a DBM.

But if you are not planning on shooting comps, I wouldnt even worry bout it. On a hunting rig, I really wouldnt worry bout it.

Keep it simple.

The main reason I like a BDL style is because of how I hold the rifle offhand sometimes, and I cannot forget magazines at home!!

I'm building a hunting rifle now with a blind box. I have a rifle with CDi bottom metal and it looks and functions well. Two reasons why I'm going with blind box. Weight this is going to be a light weight rifle.2 the magazine is something for my unorganized to forget at the house.

Just recently ordered the williams bottom metal... so I dont have it yet. It will be going into a mcmillan a5 stock. Its inletted by them for the williams bottom metal.

Once i get it i'll see how well it fits with the inletting... hopefully i wont have to do any extra

If your going for light weight I would go with a PTG forged aluminum FP.

These are what I was thinking about,look very nice and the price is right.Wyatts EBM well worth it too.I believe the PTG comes in the white so you need to finish it.

I instaled the Williams BM in my VSSF (HS Pres.) and it was a true drop in, perfect fit and very nicely made.

Guess it depends on what you're going to use the gun for? For hunting I prefer the bdl style or a blind mag. You're pretty much SOL if you lose your mag whir out hunting. Pretty tough to hand feed them single shot... Been there done that at both the range and hunting.

But, if your shooting comps, varmints, enemies, etc..that might require a lot of shots fast detachables are great.

Unloading and loadind is a snap and fast too which can be very important. Just depends on what you're doin...

2 out of 3, 308 Win are BDL by choice. yes the Btm metal has been upgraded. Williams in both. The 3rd didn't have much choice since it is a Tubb T2K. But for the most part I use the sled and single fire anyway. Not to say I don't have mags loaded up ... just seldom use. I like the clean balanced lines of my Remmy, especially the "Shorty" 22" barrel & a McM HTG stock.

I have both Badger M5 on my M40A3, and a DD Ross on my M24 type rifle. I like both and each has it's place. I have used both in the field and prefer the DD Ross for stalking and for off hand shooting positions. The M5 has it's advantages though, if you have multiple targets and need more that 5 rounds or will need different ammo for different applications it comes in handy. JAA

I use to think that way but after talking to Marty and after owning one I love it more than the single shot adapter and a blind magazines

Some of the guys that run the ASC match don't like DBM's, but their match doesn't have tight time limits or long strings of fire. I've run a standard BDL floorplate several times in the Practical Marksman match, and it's a distinct disadvantage there. Hooper is putting a DBM on my .308 now, so I'll have it for .308-only matches, and KMW put one on my .260 when it was built.

If a rifle might see long strings of fire or tight time limits, use a DBM. Otherwise, save your money, IMO.

My Match Rifle (.260, short action Savage 10FP) uses a single shot magazine follower in a blind/ADL type mag well. I shoot F Class pretty exclusively with it and followup rounds in a magazine are neither necessary nor usually permitted. My other bolt guns run BDL type mags, mostly regardless of my actual preferences, that's just the way they came.
