Not sure why the hate on Texas. Yes, we have our issues. Most states do. Third world? I'd have to draw the line there. Fuck you. However, why kick the mule? Ok so we had some problems? I haven't asked for your help or sympathy? Didn't take any of your tax dollars? Didn't get any Covid stimulus? What's your point? I didn't freeze, don't live in a Mc...whatever the fuck? Piss off

This was pretty basic, I mentioned something about pex being way better than PVC and someone actually said it wasn’t, that’s what started this.
In my home I did replace my PVC, I was doing some work anyways and the risk of having a water burst vs the expense and time in swapping over made sense for me, got a good deal on a gen set, and if I build or buy another home it’ll have a central fireplace
That’s just me, some folks think carrying a 6 shot 38 is more than fine, others think anything shy of 16rds of 9mm HSTs and at least one backup mag is asking for death in CCW.
Both are right, each pick their own risk tolerance, but in a fire fight trying to argue that 6 rounds of 38 beats 16 rounds of 9mm with a reload isn’t better, well that’s just wrong, this is basically my pex statement.
I’m not sure how this deeply offended you, and it’s not “chest thumping” lol, I really don’t care what you do, win the lotto, or get hit by a bus and I’m still going to eat my steak, if my comment on pex triggered you and you need to self censor my posts, that’s odd, but ok.
All in I basically said don’t rely on local gov, don’t build or plan for the good times, shit happens, building or planning for such is a good idea, I thought that would resonate with folks on a shooting forum.
I don’t think the people of TX are third world for the most part, I think the government has proven it’s not up to the job, and to have infrastructure that allows the issues we have seen, that’s third world.

I'm not being a shit here, so don't take it that way, but, when I bought my house in Wisc., I crawled under it, into a 4.5' crawl space and noticed all my plumbing is PVC, even in the bathroom walls (did a remodel in '16), kitchen sink, etc.. My house (modular, not a "stick" build) was 22 years old when I bought it. I have now lived in it for 24 years. The winters are cold in Wisc., like -10 deg..
My "PVC" plumbing is not wrapped and has never split, cracked, and/or leaked, since I've lived here (I check it every fall, before winter sets in), looks as good as when it was put in, as far as I can tell. Maybe I'm just lucky?? Mac

He explained TX desire to deregulate, all the shortcomings associated with it. Failure to heed warnings of 2011 cold snap, blah, blah.

My moms house has PVC and copper, it has had no problems ether, another friend HATES guns, obviously doesnt CCW he's never had a issue where he says a gun would have helped him, I know of lots of folks who dont have fire extinguishers and more than a few who have removed the batteries out of smoke detectors, they never had a problem, most of my friends dont have a med kit in their cars, never had a need for one, etc etc etc When things are running normal, or semi normal, these items and practices are not NEEDED, nice but not needed, when things go a little kaka, well thats when you have the "if only I would have" thoughts.
Do I think you are going to burst your pipes by tomorrow, of course not, but if you ever have a target of opportunity situation where your pipes are exposed, Id work on swapping over. And if you decided to build a detached shop or guest house, it would be penny wise and pound foolish to not go pex.

Lucky him. It's a third world shit hole down here. Children run around unshod in piles of broken PVC fittings, no one has fireplaces so we've been burning in 55 gallon barrels, mostly old tires. There's no power at all, anywhere, and the outdoor fires we have started for warmth are engulfing the McMansions that completely cover the floodplains down here.
Stay away, don't look at us, but send PEX. It's the penicillin of the 21st century.

Some of us still have high seer air conditioners and gas furnaces for climate control. I spent a similar freeze that went to 14-20 degrees for a couple of days in the mid 80's in northwest Houston. The power went out, no big deal, out came the sleeping bag and other camping gear.

Most serious cold areas are ether using heating oil (diesel, kerosene, jet a, etc), propane, or wood, where I lived the AC was only used to knock the humidity down a little in the summer, and half the people didn’t even bother with AC. That’s the thing about not building with a central fireplace, if you never NEED it, it’s still pretty and cozy and all for Christmas and the like.
Current place has a heat pump as well as propane, heat pump isn’t great for heating if the temp gets too low, fireplace isn’t a option sadly for logistical reasons, get power from the grid, or solar or diesel.
I know some guys who got NVG$ and plate carriers and all because “what if” but they can’t even pick up a little used Honda generator for their house.
We use propane and wood. Wood is for ambience 99% of the time, but in a really cold snap, we need it. We also have a whole house generator, but honestly, it is hit or miss if the temperature is low enough. I have some shit to figure out with it this spring, but I can't now because the back side is totally snowed in. Still, if the power goes out, and it is really cold, we have five or six cord of wood that can keep us warm enough. Not ultimate comfort warm, but no big deal. As my neighbors say, it just don't pay to not be able to heat the house.
I think it all boils down to preparation and capability. I tell my kids all the time, better to be prepared...and being capable is never a bad thIng. What I don't understand....someone help me with this, people bitch, post on social media, but can't,won't take care of themselves? It's ALWAYS someone else's fault or responsibility. How'd we get here? Same thing with shooting? Expensive gear doesn't make you capable.

Actually we were all pissed about ERCOT planning poorly. That and the freak instance of every county in the state from Brownsville, to el paso to the panhandle was below freezing at the same time.
40% of generation down for scheduled maintenance plus the weather related generation outages, that's the kind of freak instance that just never happens.
Obama's war on coal shut down several coal plants that could have been producing energy.. Those affects are still being felt as there are several more slated to close in the next couple years.
The 'fake' price adders in 2015 creating $9/Kwh trying to mimic a 'free-market' probably isn't helping either. Ripe for abuse and manipulation by the energy conglomerates in Texas. So, to fix their uproar of the billions in excess fees over those couple days, they are talking about making it illegal for end customers to truly by at their fake "whole-sale energy" prices.
But these fees end up in the prices anyway, just spread over the entire population.
I hear that the Pedo administration also refused a request to allow the plants that were online to run at increased capacity. Apparently to those mental midgets, lives are *less* important than a plant running slightly above EPA limits for a couple days. *THAT* pisses *me* off!!!!
