thanks, spife. that is what I have imagined it to be but further reading got me confused. some take measurements of the pin protrusion when the bolt is out of the action and compare that to the protrusion when the bolt is fully closed. Ray@Zermatt posted in 2018 that TL3 pin protrusion should be around 0.90" when the bolt is out but then Reubenski posted where he had only 0.005" pin protrusion after timing. that is where it got confusing.
when you say bolt handle up, I assume in the "click" position when the cocking piece is out of the detent? about 1/4 turn clockwise in the action and not completely up?
here are my measurements. let me know if this is right.
pin protrusion when the bolt is out of the action: 0.50"
pin protrusion when the bolt is in the action after the "click"(up): 0.035"
pin protrusion when the bolt is all the way down: 0.038"
if my calculation is correct, I have 0.003" Cock on Close. what happens if that number becomes negative after taking more materials? is the pin protrusion measurement when to bolt is out of the action even relevant?
