I currently have a 700PSS in .308 and am looking to move up the ladder a rung or two.

I don't do an match shooting, just informal long range.

A gun store in the state has a couple of used HTR's up for sale. They were used by a local SWAT unit and have an estimated 1000-1500 rounds through. The rifles have a desert camo finish, aux rail, 30mm rings, and come with slings+ three mags. There is some wear to the finish on the bolt knob and has some handling dings and marks here and there. The asking price is just shy of $1800.

I am wondering if it would be a good buy to pick one of the HTR's up or if I would be better off spending my money on something like an FN SPR A1A.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond.

I am no expert of HS HTR but Since it's used by SWAT I'm sure it was a capable system. However, recently I've heard some not so promising things about HS Precision both products and customer services. Do a quick search and you'll be able to find details on them. If you're willing to spend $1,800 on a Rifle I would buy a New One or at least a Less "Abused" one. Remington Milspec 5R can be picked up for around a $1,000 or less. One of the most accuratest production rifles out there from Remington. Comes already with a HS precision Stock. You can use the Remaining $800 change and invest it in a nice piece of Glass and I'd be willing to bet that rifle will do ANYTHING the HTR would. You can also get the 20 Inch Model with the Factory Threaded Barrel for future Muzzle Brake or Surppressor upgrades. Savage are another option with Great Factory Accu Triggers. And you'll have Change left to actual invest in Ammos to shoot the piss out of the Rifle and put 1,000-1,500 of your own rounds through rather than someone else. Just my 2 cents for ya!

Re: Input appreciated: used HS Precision HTR or.....

Depends on how well the rifle was taken care of, since poor cleaning practices can damage the muzzle and bore.

1500 rounds of .308 isn't much.

If it's like my old LE rifle (an HTR), the only ammo used is factory FGMM and Black Hills.

So, carefully evaluate the condition and decide.

HS is custom shop. They build to order. They like to use Nightforce rings, which go for $163.00The barrel is cut rifled. All parts are st.st. Stocky's gets about $675 for that stock. That $1800 is half price. I'd buy one. Hell, I'm heading that way pretty soon-what gun store?

Diablo, I understand what you are saying about maintenance.....I haven't had a chance to look them over yet, probably next weekend. I will definitely be checking the crown, chamber and rifling for deformity, pitting, etc....

The gun shop is pretty reputable and I have dealt with them in the past. I just was trying to gauge whether a good, used HTR is a solid investment or not. Or if I would be better off going another route.

Thanks for the input.

Hello RETE,

I have an H-S HTR, purchased in the 80's. I also purchased five ten round magazines for spares. The rifle has been lightly used only with the original five round magazine. It worked fine. Broke out the ten rounders the other day and every single one of them falls out of the action after each shot. No answers from H-S on their web site as it always tells me to try again later.
I think I'll look elsewhere for custom rifle in the future.

Sincerely,

Buddhapapa

Buddha,

I appreciate the heads up. I called them the other day on their customer service number and got right thru. They answered all my questions succinctly and offered good advice. Maybe you should call instead of email.

The magazine issue is worrisome though. Thanks again for the heads up. I will definitely call them tomorrow to see if they have a resolution.

Re: Input appreciated: used HS Precision HTR or.....

Recently purchased an htr in .223 as a trainer from mile high shooting and they dropped it in an aics chassis for me. It shoots under 1/2 MOA and is a great rifle. $1800 is a great deal.

Good shooting.

If you can find one autographed by Lon Horiuchi it will be worth more.

I'd be more inclined to categorize the HS as a semi custom stick. I was on the fence myself about garnering one but self control got the better of me so I decided to go the full blown custom build route. I don't think you'll be happy if you're into shooting one hole total outside agg. I know you won't be if you shoot against many custom rigs.
