Range Report Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Sean,

I see that you added Zero Height to the ammo profiles. Can you explain how we should use this? Is this the altitude when zero'd or the height of the optics above the boreline? If the former, perhaps you should call it "zero altitude" as height is a bit confusing. If its the latter, then can we have an option for density altitude as well as powder temp?

As you can see, I am confused on this one.....

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Zero Height was requested by Bryan Litz. It behaves the same way as it does on JBM.

It allows you to set how high/low your POI is @ your zero range. Bryan and others may need this for when shooting extremely long distances. If he has a 40MOA base, he no longer can have his 100 yard zero. So he'd put say 50" high @ 100yrds.

Got it and makes sense. I see after reading up on it, it is very useful for the old WWI rifles that were designed for 200 yard zeros and had a front sight height that was lower than normal or a rear sight height higher than normal. I'm wondering if the M1903 and similar was what prompted the feature request.

I love that the features keep coming.....

Double check this. I bought a new Hero. I assumed it would have had the newest O.S. on it, but it had 1.5. I had to download the new software, which wan't that big of a deal, just made me a little nervous since I have no idea what I'm doing. Be sure and get a backup app first, before deleting all your info.

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Sean,

You may have already answered this in this long thread somewhere, but I just don't have the time to sort through all of it.

When you check the "USE DENSITY ALTITUDE" in the settings, why does the program require a temperature input?

Thanks. You have done a fabulous job with this program!!

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

The latest release includes the ability to load atmospheric values from a Bluetooth-enabled Kestrel device.

You can access this by hitting the Menu button when in the shot-data input screen.

You must install the plugin which is available free in the Market.

Anyone who has a Bluetooth Kestrel, please download the plugin and try it out. I developed this using a K4500, but I'd like to hear from people using other models.

Thanks.

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Very nice. Can't wait to try it out.

Sean, can you explain how this works? Does Shooter, upon hitting the menu button, simply sync the data at that moment or is it a continuous sync (or configurable for that matter)?

I'm hoping its a quick sync. Since I have my Kestrel in a belt pouch, it gets a bit warm at times so when I take it out, i let it normalize, and then check the atmospherics.

Also, what data points does it pull? Temp? DA?

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

mattmcg,

Currently, you hit the menu item and it will show you your paired devices, after you select which is your kestrel, it will show you the current values your kestrel is reading...you can hit "Load" anytime to have it bring you back to Shooter with the values loaded.

This is the first release of the plugin. There are bound to be improvements in the near future to streamline it.

It will load what your Kestrel device provides. If you have configured Shooter to use DA, then it will load DA.

What model of Kestrel do you have?

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Procedure to setup the Kestrel:

1) Turn on Bluetooth

2) Go into the Bluetooth settings and pair the devices. You only need to do this once. Android will remember that paired device later, even if it's not connected.

3) Launch the plugin from Shooter and choose your Kestrel device from the paired devices list

4) It should then connect up and show you the Kestrel's current readings. This can take a couple seconds.

5) Hit "Load" button to load those values into Shooter.

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

I haven't heard from anyone about the Kestrel plugin and if it's working okay for them. If anyone has used it -- please let me know what model of Kestrel you have and how its working out for you. Thanks.

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Sorry Sean, I have the pre-Bluetooth 4500NV. I'll be upgrading soon though when I get a sec.

how do you tell the difference?

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

About $100 dollars worth of difference.

You would also have a Bluetooth logo on the back and a menu item available in the screen selection.

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

While this post is better suited in its own thread (or any of the bullet recommendation threads), I'll do my best to answer it.

Boat tailed bullet = G7

It is a much better match to the G7 bullet profile so will follow ballistic comparisons much better across the velocity curve than using the G1 reference.

Litz's book shows the G7 for the Hornady 178gr AMAX at 0.240. Personally the 175gr Sierra Matchking and the Berger 175gr LR BT should give you a bit better performance in a similar grain weight bullet.

Now back to more about Shooter! I received the plugin updated and can't wait for my BT enabled Kestrel to arrive!

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

This is an amazing app. I went out last week with a friend that has this and was hitting 730 yard shots just based off of what it showed. I'm impressed!

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

One Hole Wonder,

Ebay that phone and get a Droid

I sent you a PM.

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Sean,

Had an idea for another feature for you.

I'm attempting to create a few loads that only differ by the amount of powder in them. I've got a lot of data on each entry and wanted to easily be able to replicate an already entered load rather than going back and forth and copying.

Here's how it would work. When you get to the load selection screen, when you tap and hold and the "edit & delete" option come up, you might also include a "copy" option here. If "copy" is selected, then it prompts for a load name showing the current one that allows it to be edited. If a user doesn't change the name, it simply appends (2) to the name.

This could be a nice option to save a bit of time when trying to compare loads between each other and copying over an exhaustive list of potential variables.

As always, my $.02.

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

I've thought about this "Copy" option before. I would implement it exactly as you described, mattmcg (from the long-touch menu on a profile).

I'll see about adding this little gem in the next release.

Any other requests?

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Well, since you're asking...... ;>

1. Fix a misspelling of Atmosphere in the "edit preferences" area (its in the sentence under the "Atmosphere Unit" selection).

2. Split the "Solution" and "Table/Graph" into three buttons. Solution, Table, Graph. This will save the top screen real estate when actually looking at the table or graph and is easily toggled between the two by going back and selecting the alternate module

3. Be able to compare trajectories on the graph from not just loads on a single rifle but loads across all rifles. When you click on "Compare with...", have it start from the rifle selection instead of the load selection to allow comparisons across all rifles and loads.

4. In the "solution" screen, allow lead angle in both angle and clock.

5. In "edit preference" allow the ability to turn off automatic landscape mode (when the screen switches from horizontal to landscape automatically). I've set the device down on a flat surface a number of times in competition and turned to use it and realized the screen had reoriented causing me to scramble to find the right button or reorient then hit the button. A bit of a pain! Of course, the preference setting here would only be for Shooter and not the rest of the device.

That's all I can think of for now.......

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Awesome and way worth the 10$ IMHO.
Because of this program I was able to get a first round hit at 910yds with my Tactical Operations Lima 63 and 168 Amax's.

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Savage110, good to hear!

mattmcg,

A few of your requests I put into this release (v1.5.7):

* Fixed the mis-spelling
* Added "Duplicate" option for ammo profiles
* Allow lead angle to be entered as o'clock (enabled in Preferences)
* Couple other small things

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Wow, that was fast!

So had a chance to play around with some of the new features and love the new duplicate feature. Nice work.

I did find a bug with the "lead angle" in clock though. After going into the load profile, I changed the lead angle (clock) to 9 and hit the "solution" button. Upon selecting menu>lead controls, the display is coming up at 3 o'clock for the lead. If I manually then change it to 9, the value of 3 changes to 12 immediately and then allows me to change the value to 9. Upon selecting menu>wind controls and then switching back to menu>lead controls, the value changes back to 3 and does the same thing changing to 12.

Hope that helps!

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

I know it ran on a friends Archos 5, but I did not try every function. Not sure how it works with the GPS and angle sensors.

At this point I would await all the new android tablets that will be coming in the next few months from major manufacturers.
I know Motorola, Samsung, and a few others are working on Android tablets with good feature sets.

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

Jedi,

Shooter will work on any Android device running version 1.6 or higher and has access to the Android Market and allows you to purchase apps.

If you want to use all the features Shooter offers, the device needs to support WiFi (or 3G), GPS, and Bluetooth support.

I just did a quick search on Google for Archos 7 and found this on a review of it:

"The Archos 7 comes preloaded with the Aldiko eBook reader, the Daily Paper news aggregator, the Deezer Web radio client, and the eBuddy IM client. The bad news is that you can’t hit the Android Market for new apps. You have to get them (some free, some for-pay) at the Archos-created AppsLib store."

Also said it's running Android 1.5.

If that is true, that Archos 7 device will not work.

Re: Introducing "Shooter", ballistics for Android!

For my first post (lurker for 4 months), I'd just like to compliment the work you've done on the program. With the bluetooth interface for Kestrel, you might just have enough of a niche to take a bite out of the market with the trimble setup.

Kudos.
