Nunn-Lugar was a legitimate program focused on getting control of nuclear weapons in the post-Soviet collapse.
Cartels, foreign nations,
Pepsi, organized criminal enterprises, and anyone with money was buying up former Soviet weapons like submarines, destroyers, cruisers, frigates, tanks, MiGs, Sukhois, artillery, RPGs, ATGMs, all types of small arms, and military equipment not commonly-available on the black market.
Pepsi bought 17 submarines alone, as well as other large warships.
In addition to all of this, the Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, Belorussian, Lithuanian, and former SSR economies were headed into free-fall.
Nunn-Lugar gave them billions of dollars to help prop-up the economies while securing a lot of these weapons, and many of them were in Ukraine. Ukraine was the 2nd-largest Soviet SSR after Russia.
That didn’t change the fact that Senator Barrack Hussein Obama was working for the Kremlin and doing his part in dis-arming Ukrainian conventional small arms, artillery pieces, shells, etc. for a future Russian invasion.
Despite all of the corruption and treason, everyone was genuinely concerned that nuclear and chemical weapons would be sold to Iran, North Korea, terrorists, and cartels.
Nunn-Lugar was instrumental in creating the rise of Putin, because the former Soviet KGB officers (who were then becoming billionaires through oil,NG, and mining take-overs) had a vested interest in getting Russia back on-track as a respected world power, not some 3rd-rate sh*thole where everything was for sale, including their strategic weapons.
People need to understand how critical Nunn-Lugar was in forming the current events.
None of the current trends in social media seem to be aware of what was going on then. It requires a somewhat detailed history of the USSR from 1970-1991, then the disaster Yeltsin years (for them), the reaction with the rise of Putin, the immediate plans for taking back Ukraine that were already on the books in the early 2000s, the attempts to manipulate Ukraine through puppet presidents up until 2014, the infiltration of Eastern Donbas region immediate after Yanukovych’s ousting once the Euromaiden protests were successful, and the 2014-current events.
Just because we have a government full of Russian, Chinese, Iranian, Pakistani, Saudi, Israeli, UK, etc. moles and traitors in DC does not change the fact that Russia has interests too. Controlling Ukraine is an existential imperative for Russia, otherwise Ukraine flourishes with a modern economy, and leaves Russia in the dust economically by trading with the EU, and restricting Russia’s access to the Black Sea.
This is why Putin has done what he has done. Biden shut down Keystone for Putin and banned drilling/fracking for 60 days as his first order of business. Trump’s energy policies made the US not only independent, but a net exporter. That was killing the Russian economy because they can’t grow when oil is less than $100/barrel.
