Are you suggesting that Putin intentionally concentrated thousands of undersupplied, poorly led and poorly trained Russians to the north of Ukraine as a distraction to the Ukrainians to lure them away from the Luhansk and Donetsk regions?

Then he ordered those troops to attack towards Kiev and intentionally didn't achieve any major objectives in the western part of Ukraine just to deplete the Ukrainian forces at the cost of sacrificing thousands of Russians troops, hundreds of tanks, and half a dozen generals?

The assertion that this conflict was all about protecting the Donbass breakaway regions is about as credible as “the ghost of Kiev” story. Pretty much the oldest trick in the book.

However, he did try to do it on the cheap (initially) with minimal collateral damage, cost, and casualties- that part walks. That Russia is intentionally targeting civilians is also extremely unlikely…. modern combined arms warfare is incredibly destructive and when it’s going on in populated regions, things are going to get broken. That Russia fields a very fires-heavy army doesn’t help.

From the reporting on this conflict and blanket war crimes accusations from all corners the minute an apartment block is hit with a stray Smerch rocket, it is apparent that we have become accustomed to a couple decades of mostly precision munitions use in conflicts where one side is so dominant that they can more or less dictate the pace of things. Not the case here.

Reality is simple, Ukraine lost, what remains are nuisances for occupying force and clearing all Ukies is a matter of will and time. The main goal has already been reached (well almost there is still a matter of destroying/surrendering of forces on the old LOC with Donbass) and Ukrainians from eastern part are safe from Ukrainians from western part, Crimea is secured and Sea of Azov locked.

The U.S. has tried to use yesterday's NATO and G-7 meeting to push the Europeans towards sanctioning Russian hydrocarbon exports. And while the NATO communique mentions China it only urges it to leave its neutral position. Everyone knows that that is not going to happen.

Ukrainian soldiers do carry cellphones and upload pictures of all kind. There are often several of each disabled vehicle from different perspectives which makes for a lot of double and triple counts. There is also the inconvenient fact that both sides use the same Soviet weapon systems which often makes it impossible to identify the side to which a vehicle belongs.

Last but not least the authors of Onyx are obviously taking sides in the conflict arguing to send more arms to the Ukraine as if that would change the inevitable outcome.

Some farmers are substituting organic waste as a low-cost solution to nitrogen, phosphorous, and potash fertilizers. The move, however, will result in significantly reduced harvests of the bean.

Readers may recall we published a chart pack over the weekend of how the Ukrainian conflict and resulting sanctions by western countries on Russia have choked the world of natural resources, sending prices of commodities higher as traders fear shortages.

One chart shows that Russian fertilizer exports end up in South America, a top coffee-producing region.



We noted in a separate piece that Brazil, the world's top coffee producer, imports more than 85% of its fertilizer demand. Russia is its leading supplier, and Belarus provides 28% of the total. High prices for the nutrient and or even reduced shipments because of sanctions could jeopardize the world's coffee harvest this year.

"The situation represents a mega emergency for our members," said Fatima Ismael, general manager of the Nicaraguan coffee cooperative Soppexcca in Jinotega.

Prices for arabica in New York are flat on the year but could soon increase as fuel and fertilizer prices skyrocket. The Green Markets North American Fertilizer Index is up a little more than 30% this year, and crude oil is up 50%. Fertilizer and fuel are two major cost factors in cultivating coffee.



Xinia Chaves, executive director of the Costa Rican Coffee Institute, warns that insufficient fertilizer will reduce farmers' yields this year.

Rodrigo Vargas, president of Doka Estate in Costa Rica, said his farm needs 1,400 tons of fertilizer to produce 40,000 bags of coffee each harvest. Due to soaring prices, he'll be spreading less fertilizer on the soil and understands this will hurt yields.

Arabica coffee prices have risen 86% over the last two years due to adverse weather conditions affecting Brazilian harvests and snarled supply chains increasing freight costs.
