Until 2 weeks ago, the only 1911 I owned was a Rock Island compact with the 3.5" barrel. It shoots alright but never knocked my socks off. Then I got my hands on a Springfield A1 full size and I was floored. Not sure how to explain it but it just felt right. I was smiling the whole ride home from the range. Incredibly accurate and had no problems eating blazer steel cases.

I've already started shopping for my next one.

Sorry the photo sucks

That's what I plan on doing. Just wanted to know what the options are once I get there. The chrome finish marres pretty easily so that will need to be addressed and there's a couple other things that I would like to do down the road.

Re: Is there room on the 1911 bandwagon for one more?

many other people who work on 1911's but after reading around. the people I listed are top of the heap and have proven their work time and time again building with it a reputation and their guns will hold value.

They will stay on my short list, then. Saves me a lot of searching. Thanks for putting that together.

Re: Is there room on the 1911 bandwagon for one more?

BigJoe is very true on the 'smith part.
There's a lot of folks that can play with 1911's and make them run very well, but unless a known name did the work and you say "I had this done and that done" it usually actually hurts the value....

Re: Is there room on the 1911 bandwagon for one more?

The guys still waiting on their 2009 snipers hide rifle build would be only halfway through the wait time for most of those guys listed.

My personal opinion is that Stan Chen probably builds the most eye stunning 1911's there are.

Re: Is there room on the 1911 bandwagon for one more?

I don't know anyone who has been disappointed with the work coming out of the Springfield Custom Shop -and they are comparatively quick.

Re: Is there room on the 1911 bandwagon for one more?

try having your factory barrel relinked and a match bushing fitted....I'm sure you'll see accuracy get a lot better. Springfield and Colt barrels shoot great if they're properly fitted. so will your RIA I'm willing to bet, it worked great on the last two RIA's I built for customers and kept them from wasting money on a new barrel.

Re: Is there room on the 1911 bandwagon for one more?

I jumped on the 1911 wagon last night.

That ain't funny man... Those assclowns just piss me off. I wish I had that much spare time in the shop to goof around. I'm usually in my shop 10+ hrs a day and I still don't get everything done. I've got 4 rifles to finish and 8 1911s to build. Not to mention all the basic work that comes in.

Re: Is there room on the 1911 bandwagon for one more?

Garthwaite does great work and is a wealth of information.

I had a problem with a 1911. I e-mailed Jim asking about pricing and turn around.

The next day I got an e-mail from Jim. He gave me step by step instructions on how to troubleshoot the problem and he got the gun running like a sewing machine.

Damn. Oh, well. But if you're gonna mention Garthwaite, at least drop a link:

Re: Is there room on the 1911 bandwagon for one more?

Like many here said "shoot the piss out of it!!!!" I have had a few 80 series gun like the one you just picked up. I have slowly switching over to 70 series. I have a DW RZ45 that is just rediculious.

Re: Is there room on the 1911 bandwagon for one more?

Do yourself a favor and ditch the RIA as fast as you can, do not sell or give it to anyone you know or like. Use the money for your next quality 1911.

As far as your Springfield goes, oil the snott out of it for the first 500-1000 rounds or so, then thoroughly clean and then only use enough oil to prevent corrosion.

Exactly what might you need a gunsmith for by the way? Looks like you already have most of the popular options. (though I prefer the flat hi rise grip safeties as that lump bugs the heck out of me)
