I have had trouble finding 338 300 grain smk's and sceners so I ordered 100 hornady 285gr. I measured the BEARING SURFACE alll 100 bullets and they ranged from .529 to .539. About 60 of the rounds were split between .532 & .533 with the remaining 40 split pretty evenly between .529, .530, .531, .534, .535, .536, .537, .538, .539. Is this variance acceptable?

Re: Is this acceptable?

I guess it depends how anal you want to be about it. I have not used that particular projectiles but from the ones that I have used that seems to be about to be about the normal variance in bearing surface length that I have seen. Only you can decide if this variance is acceptable to you but I would not hesitate to use them. I would use the ones with bearing surface length from .535 - .539 for load development or sighters and then use the ones measuring between .0529 - .0534 when shooting for groups. This way you are only looking at about a 1% variance in the bearing surface length between all of the projectiles in a group.

It’s entirely possible to just load up all of the bullets and never be able to tell a difference in the group size but I like the” peace of mind” that comes with sorting my bullets. Good luck in whatever you decide and good shooting.

You mean a seating die? I'm sure that's what you mean. I just got a new one with mic, a Forster, and you just rang my bell!!
