Just got a MKII TR, Crown has no chamfer.

Hi I just went to Dick's and bought a new savage MKII Tr, once I got it home I realized the crown has no chamfer. It is recessed, but the bore seems seems to be a sharp edge to the crown.
Should I take it shooting tomorrow or just send it back? Kind of depressed.
I cant find many pics of the crowns of these to compare, only a few.
I have found some talk about crown problems online, but no real topics.
Thanks

Mine didnt have one either. Im not telling you to do this but I used my vld tool to clean up this area. The groups tightened up a good bit, I didnt get carried away just touched it up a bit. I wasnt worried about messing it up as I work part time at a gunsmith shop. Id heard of people doing this and had to try it for myself.

Re: Just got a MKII TR, Crown has no chamfer.

There are a couple of recent threads over at RFC about crowning. The short version is, it doesn't matter if the crown is chamfered or not as long as it's clean and even.

Re: Just got a MKII TR, Crown has no chamfer.

I took it out today to test it, I could onle get it down to about 2 moa at 50 yards with many different types of ammo.
I did use the crappy rings that came with it though and just mounted a bushnell 3200 10x40, and the trigger was kind of heavy.
I play to order a rifle basix trigger a dip base and some other stuff before I try it again.
I found a good smith that is local, I would tather pay him 50 bucks to re crown it, than send it back to Savage.

Re: Just got a MKII TR, Crown has no chamfer.

The lack of a chamfer has no effect on anything at all. Basically, the thought behind the chamfer is that it makes it harder to ding the muzzle at the rifling. While this may have some merit, the crown is still just as delicate with a chamfer.

All of my crowns are cut without a chamfer, as I see no proven functional need for it. Shoot it with confidence, but remember, poor accuracy from the rifle in hand won't be tied directly to the lack of a chamfered crown.

Re: Just got a MKII TR, Crown has no chamfer.

my rock river .308 doesnt appear to have a chamfer on the crown either, and i have seen several other barrels on different rifles that do not appear to either.

i would shoot it with some better rings and a good rest or bags, before you go spending any more money on it. possible that the barrel needs to settle in a bit.

do you shoot over at central FL rifle and pistol club, i used to be a member over there for many years before moving to NC

Re: Just got a MKII TR, Crown has no chamfer.

My tr has no crown either. It was threaded from factory and I run a suppressor 99 percent of the time. The ammo that shoots the best are cci standarded velocity and sub sonics. They will shoot under a minute @ 100 yards. Another one that does fairly well is Remington golden bullets. I can get pretty decent groups with those @ 50 yards but they really open up @ 100. I have a little vx3 efr 6.5x20 on it.

Re: Just got a MKII TR, Crown has no chamfer.

I have the 20moa DIP mount with Burris rings and the Bushnell 10x scope setup. If you do a little searching here you can find some very goods threads about trigger modifications and setups. One item that will help ALOT is getting some good bottom metal so you can torque the action proper. Dip makes a nice piece that includes the longer bolts. Regarding ammo i have had the best groups with Wolf match and federal 922a.

Shoot it and then shoot it some more. Then look at the muzzle... if you have a nice even snowflake, then don't worry about it.

The Ocala National Forrest range is closer for you, but it gets kinda wild and wooley ... best is to go during the week in the morning... weekends can get insane, esp with hunting season starting up.

By contrast, the range in the Osceola National Forrest (Lake City) is nice, has 200 yard as well as 2 50 yard, and is safe and clean. There is a monthly informal match, mostly rimfire, all sorts of fun stuff like steel plates, lolipops, golf balls, etc. on teh 2nd sunday of each month. Check the "friends of the osceola" group on facebook for details.

My FVSR didn't have a chamfered crown either , still have yet to shoot it. It's currently sporting a Boyd's tacticool dip trigger guard and floor plate. Waiting on the weaver tac grand slam.

Re: Just got a MKII TR, Crown has no chamfer.

My savage mark 2 TR didn't have any rifling in the barrel, and savage has had it for three weeks trying to fix it or whatever they are doing with! That is my first and last rifle from them. Customer service has been horrible. Just thought I'd share.
