I have been looking at getting into long range shooting and I have no idea where to begin! What caliber should I start with? What rifle should I go with? What kind of scope should I use? I have been really into the art of long range shooting and the skill it takes to make a shot at long range for years and I am finally in a position to start getting involved with this. any info anyone has will be greatly appreciated!

Re: Just Starting Out!

Welcome to the Hide, the best advice I can give is read read read this forum, learn as much as you can, buy something that fits what you are capable of shooting. Don't buy something crazy expensive and tacticool right off the bat. Don't be afraid to ask questions, even when someone gives you crap for asking something they think is stupid. Good Shooting!

Re: Just Starting Out!

A 308 is good caliber to start with because of factory ammo availabilty. As for rifle I like Savages but howa, remington are also good choices. Scopes well some will say only buy Night Force or leupod. I say buy what you can afford and still be able to buy the ammo to shoot because trigger time is the most important issue. If you have a $5000 dollar budget get top of the line if you only have $1500 get a Savage and a Bushy 3-12 or weaver 3-15 a good 1 pc mount and rings then go shoot and shoot and shoo

Re: Just Starting Out!

I'm looking for something that can range between 500-1,000 yards and I know nothing about scopes. I figured a .308 to start not sure on rings or scope and I have about a 1,000 budget give or take a little

Re: Just Starting Out!

A $1k budget is difficult to work with...

If that's all I had, I'd buy a Rem 700 Tactical in .308 for $600, a Super Sniper 10x42 for $299 then spend the rest on a base and rings.

Re: Just Starting Out!

The sps varmint has a 75 dollar rebate going on still, I believe. You can get into that rifle for around 500 dollars after rebate. The biggest thing is to shoot! Good luck to you, and welcome to the hide!

Re: Just Starting Out!

My vote is a Remy 700 SPS Tactical (AACSD if you can swing it) and a Bushnell Elite or other "reasonably" priced scope, decent base, and Weaver Tactical or Burris X-treme rings.

That should get you started and give you lots of upgrade options later. I've had a couple SPS Tacticals and they are high value rifles that will keep you occupied for quite a while. You can always upgrade the stock later and sell your first born for a Nightforce someday.

I picked up my first SPS Tactical at Bud's Gun Shop for $415 OTD (used of course).
