Kobe bryant, he gone

My youngest Son is a commercial Airplane Driver. I never saw this coming when he was young and to say I am proud of him would be an understatement.
He does not like me calling him an "Airplane Driver" but does understand when I ask him,"What airplanes can you not fly?" his answer is,"I can fly them all Pa." He has thousands of hours and makes good bucks flying all over the world.
I hate flying because of a couple of bad experiences in RVN when we came DOWN hard, but I survived, others didn't.
I love helicopters because they saved my life a time or 40 in RVN but, although he has ratings to fly them, my Son has told me a lot of times that, "Helicopters do not fly, they just beat the air under them into submission." and he has a lot of hours in them.

Some of my happiest times are going with my Son in an aircraft where he lets me hold the handles but I am quick to say,"You got it?" because I don't.

Many times I have taken the plane off of the ground and flown around and set it back down with no problems, but there does come a time where you really need someone that has all of their shit together in case of a mechanical failure or, I wasn't holding the handles right. to do it right. My Son doesn't tell nor ask when I am riding Dirt Bikes, Flat Track Bikes, just asks for advice. He has his thing and I have mine.

My Son has a few of those things under his belt too and did good with them. Up in Alaska a time or two but one at ABQ, Thank God. I still have him. 2 were with rotary wing aircraft and he gave that up and only flies fixed wing now.

Were my Son to tell me, "Hang on, we are going to fly through that barn, hangar, or what ever, " I will be on for the ride as I know he can do it, but never would. He is too smart.

Old, Bold, all of that shit, he is still flying. and I would ride with him to forever. FM

So not to be too much of a jerk but I think taking a 13 million dollar helicopter to youth basketball in fog that the LAPD’s helicopter department considered too thick to fly kind of made this totally avoidable and unnecessary. Do people really need to do shit like this? It makes me feel a little less sympathetic. I’m for sure no greenie but come on.

It sure sounds like this is a case of pilot error. Although I haven't flown in a number of years, I also have a commercial pilot's license with IFR rating. It's very easy to become complacent and almost casual about the risk, especially when you have flown the route hundreds of times. I find it hard to believe that the pilot was not aware of the foggy conditions he was going to fly near or into. A weather briefing before any flight, no matter the duration, is SOP. Pure speculation on my part, but the pilot may have felt pressure to fly, despite his better judgement. There were many flights that I cancelled, as was my right and duty as pilot in command, due to weather. Many times the client was pissed and less than understanding.

I’m not a pilot, but I am a captain, and I can tell you that a don’t take risks with crew or vessel unless absolutely necessary. The string of bad decisions for me to get to that point would have to be long and egregious. I’m not trying to Monday Morning Quarterback, I’m just saying that conditions dictate, and I won’t sail in more than half of what I know I can handle.

In a former life, I operated mobile cranes. Nothing big or fancy. When the wind is blowing or the ground unstable you have the right to say no. It is your ass on the line. Thankfully my boss had my back. The one time he didn't I told him to come over and show me how to do it. 22 tons of concrete falling from 10 feet will shake the ground. Alot.

I heard a new fad food to be sold by the opposing teams at half time... -- Kobe Krisps --mmm-mmm Tastes like Chicken. i almost added "dark meat".. but I don't want to be accused of being racist. Cause I'm not.
You’re a true pile of Shit to post something like this. I’m going to guess god didn’t let your nuts drop so you have no kids and likely don’t understand the feelings associated with those who have kids. Multiple kids on board dead and you think it’s funny.

Oh and the prior posts were taking everything so seriously --ay? But to answer your question --That's LIFE. Shit happens. I hope when I go someone cracks a joke and laughs at my expense. My joke was about Kobe. Kobe was a rapist that bought off the accuser because he could. My joke was NOT about the kids. So by you dragging the kids into --it? Well sorry you're confusing the issue. But frankly.. go for it. Flame on. PS Please keep my nuts out of it.

You trust the Fake news about Kobe and rape ? Just wondering? Seems a bunch of low IQ folks like to regurgitate media talking points when it alines with their views. So since the news said that’s what happened I guess it happened.

Yep.. That's me. Golly. I'm just a BAD BAD person. Zero class. Dumb as a mud fence and my widdle nuts haven't dropped yet. Ooo-eee. Anything else I can do for ya? Enjoy that resentment. I'm going to go have some pizza...

It wasn’t fake news. I agree though, like him or not he died, with nine orhers in a tragic accident. An accident that is scrutinized by the FAA and NTSB for possible faults in maintenance or pilot error. There are other mitigating factors, but the most obvious ones represent those of us who work in the aviation transportation field, and affect us. Either through rule changes or just public perception, where blame gets passed around liberally and exoneration is passed sparingly. Reason is mostly out the window for people who don’t/haven’t worked in the industry. They like to “sing along with the cliches”.

Been a while and had to look up a right triangle calculator. Last 10 seconds covered .5 miles ground distance starting at 624' AGL. So, the decent from there was 62' per second at 77 degrees. Something like that. What was the average air speed? Show your work for extra credit.

I have a 5 year old son an a 2 year old daughter. Like him or not, I can’t imagine a scenario where I’m looking into my daughters eyes knowing we’re about to die and I can’t do anything to save her. This isn’t the time or place to shit on anyone.
From what I’ve read they were doing 150kts with no viz. It was instant.

Cant imagine what loss of reference is like in an aircraft but I had it happen a couple times during one particularly bad snowstorm in a car.

In seconds your body goes into a panic mode type feeling as you cant tell if you are going up, down, right, left sideways or all of the above.

Knowing I was the only thing on the road I stopped exited the car and checked my bearings physically with the location of the guardrail and edge of the road.

It was kind of exciting after realizing all was good..........

Margin of error in a car at 10-15 miles per hour vs an aircraft at hundreds of mile per hour though..........

In flight it is called a graveyard spin and it doesn't matter how good of a VFR pilot you may be. You want to do opposite what the instruments indicate and you begin to feel equalized. If you have enough altitude you just continue to descend in circles. If you attempt to correct per instruments you feel out of control so you go right back to what feels right. The odd thing is if you do use instruments and are to wait out the out of control sensation you will equalize again.

There will be a detailed NTSB report available to the public here once the investigation is completed. I read these reports regularly as understanding how other pilots shortened their lives may prevent you from repeating the same mistakes.

Just write down the registration number of the crashed helo (N72EX) and search the NTSB site in a few months. The investigators do not follow the news cycle, they look for factual evidence, which may take a while.
If there's any real good that I've gotten out of this thread, it's that the list of incidents on the link you provided is surprisingly short lol. I already don't like flying very much, so it's good to see that the first page (10 reports) goes all the way back to 2016 rather than them all being within the last 6 months or so like I had expected.

Same here. I have 3 kids, the oldest is turning 8 soon. I have absolutely no "connection" with Kobe and I'm not a basketball fan in the least. But I can only image the feeling a father has when he's completely helpless to protect his kids. Even if that feeling is only for a split second, it still must have felt like an eternity.

Being killed "twice" i guess

Time to let Kobe and all others RIP
None of us know what actually happened, but, it did.
Let's wait for the reports of what did happen from FAA
I do wonder what would have happened had the Pilot had a Peter Pilot on board?
Too many aircraft and not enough Airplane Drivers?

He was fun to watch playing basketball from time to time but in no way deserving to die like that while with his child it happens , but no one deserves it ..
