So y’all are way ahead of me but i’ll post here anyway. Rifle is a .308 Steyr Scout shortened to 16” and as Nightforce SHV. This is my first time with “positional shooting” in this way. Prior to this, my idea of positional shooting was the old school with a loop sling so this is all new to me. I’m actually pretty happy with this.

I made a poor zero adjustment to compensate for the magnetospeed on the barrel so everything is left a bit. Minus the 2 shots I pulled (which still count) it shows some improvement over the last year.

Each target was a different bullet/primer combo as I was just interested in gathering some velocity data. ELD-X typically hits about 1" higher than the elite hunters in this rifle.

here is an explainer

Hi Frank ( @Lowlight ) - wow, Chris mentioned that he won’t be bending due to his back surgery.

Boy I’d love to talk to him. I had lumbar herniation surgery 15 years ago and finally had to have fusion on 8 Mar.

I get cleared to shoot again at the start of Jul and I will work hard to try to get back into some kind of form. I’m def coming to Mifflin and I’m sure we will find any limitations after 3 days there (but have the wheel chair standing by just in case! ).

I’d be so very interested if Chris was willing to talk about his surgery, its impact on his shooting, and what work and/or work around he found helpful for post-op shooting.

Cheers

I shot a kraft drill yesterday with a hunting build that was put together this past spring.

MDT HNT26 with folder & arca rail
22" Proof Research carbon wrapped barrel, sendero contour, 1:8 twist
Lone Peak Razor action
Trigger Tech Primary
Factory Berger 140 Hybrid Target ammo
Using a bag on top of tripods for sitting kneeling & standing, and a bipod & same bag for prone.

I’ve started to do regularly the Kraft exercise, my first was about 11 months ago, I do it several time in a training session, not less than 2 exercises, the first one at the start of the training session, and the last to close the training session.
the first one always using the center target, 12 rounds 4 position, the last following the same path but using the target on the corners.
the following is my last.

Shot off a barricade with a pint sized git lite game changer. This is my second one. First one I shot 3 weeks ago and it was embarrassing. Spend the last 3 weeks dry firing and got a lot better. Goal is to become a 2 Moa off barricades. Still having a hard time with the standing position, it’s my weakest.

Well Im back up and running - got a brand new 6.5 barrel with Hellfire brake on the ATX using 143 Norma. The barrel has <50rds thru it, I cleaned it prior to shooting today, zeroed my rifle and walked to the A-ladder I built over the winter (shot with a lite schmedium). Had 10 rds and just changed rungs every shot so standing on down to very low kneeling. Didn't do par times cuz Im not that good yet, but I acted like it was a 120sec stage (didn't rush but wasn't taking all the time I could).

I am in straight disbelief I think this is an amazing result (for ME!).

*vertical stringing looks like = try this next time?

Do you know which position shots are low? My 2 cents, I find low shots are usually from two sources,

a.) Imperfect bone support - meaning the weight of your body is not going as straight down as possible, most likely leaning into the gun a bit, causing up and down wobble, so the weight of your body above your hip hinge having to be supported/controlled with muscle tension, and given that is inherently unstable with even slight fatigue, that body wobble transfer to the gun. Keep tinkering with your position -- moving your hips closer to the gun, locking knees out better (kick your heels outward, helps lock your legs better), etc.

b.) A slight impulse into the gun anticipating recoil. I hate the term flinch - it is not a fear response. Your body learns pretty quickly, when my finger does this (pulls trigger) it gets pushed back and compensates for that learned push. It just takes mental discipline and good reps to disconnect that response.

They were sporadic (like 2 goods and a bad) but 2/3 in high kneeling I believe. Other 1 I think I recall saying 'why'd I pull the trigger on that one?'

I think A is spot on in my case, (amount of butt pressure - lol oh terminology) and I kinda remember thinking 'ya you weren't putting left hand where I normally do' so fatigue/trying 2 knees vs 1/not being mentally sharp with shot process for all 10 (that just made me think of how my stages normally go which I think they call a pattern lol - focusing on all 10 shots).

Standing is actually one of my most repeatable positions. I twist my toes all the way out with legs locked and spread, found thats what works for me. That and putting my left hand on the scopes pic rail under the objective of scope using that ridge to pull gun into myself. I saw a huge difference doing that vs more using my thumb somewhere on front of gun or sling stud to control level and pull bak somewhat but I found its not 'straight' into my shoulder...also the pic rail is usually over the bag so Im not influencing the gun a tad up n down like I would when I extend my arm further forward.

Not sure how I missed it either. Pretty good training aid.
Did a pair with my RimX. Had to verify my zero on the points first. Just put a new Element 6-36x on it.

Had knee surgery 5 weeks ago so I had to slightly modify. Did 4 standing upright, 4 standing mid height and 4 one legged kneeling...all from a single bag on a tripod plate.

Tried at 50 yds first and the again at 100.
Looks like I'm a little less than 2x the group size off bags as I am off the bench. For me, that's about what I'd expect.

Right drift was about 2mph not accounted for. Actually felt pretty good with the group, considering the rifle is only capable of about 1 moa at 100.

I’m late to the party, but better late than never, right? My wonderful wife gave me a tripod for my birthday yesterday so Memorial Day is going to be my first run of the Kraft drill with a tripod. I’ll post a pic of the target whether good or bad, and you gents can help get me right.
Spoiler alert: I’ll be happy to have all rounds on paper🤣

Alright. I couldn’t wait till Monday. Went this evening and here’s the results. Shots 1,5,9 are standing. Shots 2,6,10 are kneeling. Shots 3,7,11 are sitting. Shots 4,8,12 are prone. Lots of room for improvement, but I will say that my zero was left just a little-not an excuse, but just a factor. Also, I did every shot with the new tripod for the setup/breakdown process. Did not time anything and it took about 15 minutes to complete it. Feel free to critique and break it down. Thanks!
