Hunting & Fishing ky elk tags question

i looked on there site and got nothing, called and cant gett through.

i own land (roughly 400 acres) in rockcastle county kentucky. i dont know if there are elk in that area or not but my question is can i buuy a land owner tag and go hunting with a outfitter somwhere else? i live in indiana

No, you have to be choosen in the lottery to be able to hunt in the state of Kentucky, land owner or not.

Don't know how many tags KY is drawing this yr but last yr the TN lottery was for four (4) tags. The population is still pretty small around these parts.

Kentucky has approximately 10,000 elk

elk lottery costs $10 What is the deadline to apply?
Midnight eastern standard time, April 30.

It is a draw for The department will issue 800 permits through its general quota elk hunt drawing this year. Of this number, 600 are cow elk permits (with this “antlerless” permit, hunters are also allowed to take bulls that do not have visible antlers). Another 125 permits are for mature bulls with a minimum of four antler points on at least one side. The remaining 75 elk hunting permits are “spike” permits, valid for bull elk with up to two antler points on each side. The spike permit is new this year.

I know we have LBL here in western KY that have elk roaming in it. Im pretty sure that the rumor is if you get drawn to hunt there its bow only!

Just got back from helping a buddy on his elk hunt. A little extra info. We did it DYI. If you get drawn for a tag you have to submit for an area ( I dont know if these are drawn or assigned) you send in your top 3 choices though.

It is rifle for 1 week. You can use your tag with archery until end of DEC. Depending on area it can be hard hunting.

This year they were not bugling in the area we hunted. Hunted 4 days and only saw 2 legal bulls. He harvested a 4x5 that dressed 575! I just wish i had a tag!!

I did not know there were elk in KY. Is this a DOC replant program that has been going on for some time or have there always been elk in KY?

I think they have been releasing them for about 10 years but not too sure. I know I have put in for the last couple of years and no luck. But for $10 it is worth a shot. I know the Missouri Department of Conservation just approved a plan to reintroduce elk here so hopefully we will have a huntable population in a few years.

you can get an out of zone elk permit and follow deer season and equipment regulations to hunt outside of the 16 county restoration zone to hunt inside the 16 counties you must be drawn in the lottery. check out fw.ky.gov if you already havent.

applications go on sale 12-01-2010 for 2011 hunting season. They were $10 dollars for 2010 season.

Ouch souoth of E-town - We hunted in Letcher County - I think all of the hunt zones are in the eastern part of the state

Oh ok, your not to far away from me then. Im in hopkinsville. I heard the eastern side of the state was doing this. I am pretty sure if you want to bow hunt one you can hunt them out of the LBL.
