Hey guys, Im gettin ready to load up some ammo for my old man for christmas.

Hes been using 42 grains of 4895 with the 178 a max in hornady cases. Ive bought him some new lapua brass and was wandering if I should use the same powder charge for Lapua cases or back off a bit.

Anyone with experience with this care to give some advice? Thanks alot.

They are pretty close. It's always a good idea though to back down a bit when using new components though. Try some at 41 and work back up.

Re: lapua 308 case capacity vs hornady

I mic'ed out Winchester, Lake City, Hornady, Federal, Black Hills, and Lapua brass for neck thickness a while back. I thought I had recorded the numbers somewhere, but I can't seem to find them. I remember being surprised by the thickness of Federal.

If memory serves, Lapua, Federal, and Lake City were on the thick side. I believe Hornady was in the middle and Black Hills and Winny were on the thin side.

I would back off a bit and work up. As Rob01 pointed out, that is good practice regardless. If memory serves, that is a pretty moderate load you have there, so I wouldn't anticipate issues, but better safe than sorry.

I got a load from Rob01 that was 44 varget and a 178 amax In Hornady brass.I bought some Lapua brass and used the same load. The results was the same out to 400.That is as far as i have had a chance to shoot so far.Hope this helps.Like everyone else has stated stat out low and work up.

You might want to get a spent primer and prime a case with a spent primer seated backwards for this exercise.

Re: lapua 308 case capacity vs hornady

i went the other way lapua to hornady brass going from 44g varget to 44.8g with the 175 s and when neck sizing had to go from a .337 .335 bushing- so the reverse should apply

I think this is because 44gr of Varget is right around an accuracy node with 178s, so it should be insensitive to the charge variation between Lapua/Remington brass and Winchester brass.

My guess is you would find the same thing around 45.8-46gr of Varget using 168s.
