Brought my brand new 6.5 Creedmore precision rifle to the range yesterday. A friend of mine is letting me borrow a scope and bipod until I get my own. We mount everything and adjust everything in his driveway getting everything perfect. We get to the range and set up 50yds to find the target. After 2 shots the extractor breaks on the bolt and we are DONE...

So my first time shooting distance was a complete disappointment. Now I have to call the manufacture and probably send my whole gun back, and have a gunsmith look at it.

I bought a Ruger 40150 Mark IV Tactical .22LR after a lot of research and I really like it. It is well designed and well made. It has rails on top and the bottom of the barrel, which I don't plan on using and I saw someone make the comment on the internet that Ruger would send you filler screws for the base screw holes at no charge, upon request. So, I sent them an e-mail, was told to go to a particular link and re-submit my request, which I did. A week goes by and a package arrives from Ruger......cool. I open it, and there are 3 screws in the package. Only problem is, the top rail takes 3 screws and the bottom rail takes 2, totalling 5. Ruger was pretty good about the shipment of the 3 screws, but I was left thinking "If you are going to bother sending any screws out at all, why the hell didn't you send at least 5, maybe even 6, one for a spare ?". I just dropped the whole subject and installed the filler screws in the top, left the bottom ones open and called it good. Isn't going to hurt anything. But, I was scratching my head wondering why they would half ass something like that. The postage on the 3 screws was probably 20 times the cost of 5 or 6 screws.

But, at the end of the day, they are an American manufacturer and we should support them. The takedown problems of the prior versions (MKII, MKIII) have been solved very nicely. Like I say, I really like the pistol.

Yep, that is Ruger's customer service policy right there. When I got my .357 Vaquero I wanted to obtain a spare parts kit of high-wear components to keep it running in the field, as I do with every gun that I own.

Ruger does not sell them and requires you to send the gun back to their facility. I have not had anything in the Vaquero that needed replacing, and I shoot it quite often, but I used parts from Uberti, Pietta and other SAA mfg's, fitted them and made them operable in the Ruger just in case.

I'm not really excited to send the gun back at mail, but it sounds like it's what I need to do. Probably put a note in there to put at least 50rds through it before even thinking of sending it back to me.

I had this same issue with a 700. Attempted to extract my 5th shot with the weapon and the extractor sheared off. I had a local smith do the work since it is the riveted in extractor and was above my level of the kind of stuff I tinker with. I can definitely feel your pain.

The only thing I can dredge up on DIY fixes for the RPR bolt is the 'detent ball'. Someone on 65Creedmoor Forum mentioned that you can use No.3 steel shot to replace it in an emergency.

Other than that, neither Anarchy Outdoors or Brownells, both of which normally carry a lot of aftermarket Ruger stuff, have any bolts or bolt components on hand.

If you read your owners manual ruger firearms actually don't come with any warranty. But they have some of cutomer service around.
Their manual explains the legal reasons why there is no written "warranty".

That's a bummer, and it understandably has dampened your enthusiasm about your new rifle. I have an RPR 6.5CM (gen 2) with 2600 flawless rounds through it.... and still capable of 1/3-MOA groups. It's a fantastic value in a precision rifle. There's a reason it's so popular, and the vast majority of experience out there mirrors my own.

I submit this is a fluke, and unfortunately, it happened to you. Get it fixed, get it back, and enjoy the crap out of it!

The first shot fired and extracted perfect. The 2nd fired and no extraction. The 3rd shot same thing. We pulled the bolt and looked at it and that's when the extractor fell off when we were checking it out.

Centerfire may be different, but in the last year I've contacted Ruger about extraction issues with my RAR .17HMR and RPRimfire. They promptly mailed springs and extractors in both cases.

Identifying why it failed would be their priority. Bolt/ breech machining, metallurgy, ammunition.....?

They probably know what the primary issues are by now, so call customer service and see if self installation of a new extractor is an option.

The extractor is a pretty easy thing to change on the RPR. You need a small punch, the little tool to hold back the extractor and it comes out and is replaced rather easily..... Don't let something this petty get you down, there is a lot of fun in long distance shooting.

Will FOUR shots suffice in this case? Four shots in a 0.186-MOA group. That pesky 5th shot making it an embarrassing 0.518-MOA group? I calculated it both ways. (wait... keep scrolling)

Or this one with the called flyer? It was still a 0.757-MOA group with the "flyer." But, four shots in a 0.285-MOA group is more than three!

OK, OK.... if you INSIST on ALL five shots counting... Here ya go. This is from last weekend, with 2600 rounds through the original tube. 0.342-MOA. Close enough to 1/3? My annotation says 200 yards, but it was an actual measured 196 yards, which is what I used to calculate the group size.

Admittedly, the 1/3-MOA groups are not common for me.... But, I believe the rifle is better than me. That said... 1/2-MOA groups (yes... 5-shot groups are the only kind I do)... are pretty frequent, even in this noob's hands. Sub-1MOA is so easy, I feel like I'm cheating.

Instead of 5 shots... how about 20 shots at just sub-1-MOA at 300 yards? Shall I hang my head in shame? I've been at this for just over a year.

I'm kinda looking forward to when this barrel is finally "shot out," so I can stick a Krieger or Bartlein barrel on it and see what I can do!

I'd be surprised if Ruger left you hangin at all. They should provide you with a shipping label. And they will ship it directly back to you. There's no FFL involved for warranty work.

That really bites. Load car with all the gear, drive XX miles to the range. Unload gear and only get 3 shots. I guess that is one reason to bring multiple guns just in case.

Thanks! I don't know... I'm torn between pushing it as far as I can... vs... replacing it sooner, because my "expectations" are getting more "picky!" I used to be happy if I got 1-MOA or better. I can do that without even hardly trying now. Now, I want 1/2-MOA to be "easy" and 1/3-MOA to be "routine," if I do my part.

Mind you... I'm not reloading, yet. The main thing keeping me from going down THAT rabbit hole is logistics... nowhere to set up a bench in my house at this time. Maybe when the kids move out. I've had some pretty good results with "custom" ammo from Copper Creek. But, heck... I get pretty good results with factory match ammo, too!

Here is a picture of the bolt. Whatever was supposed to be in the hole is gone. It was stuck in a position and when it became unstuck it just dropped off, something small, I assume a spring shot somewhere, and the other piece fell into tall grass. We looked for it until we started getting attacked by fire ants. I don't have the ammo. It's all at my friend's house.

There is a retaining pin that holds the spring and the extractor in. See if the pin is there or broken, it is on the side of the bolt.

I hope so. I really want to get out there and shoot. Shooting long distance is something I've been wanting to do for decades. Then I finally get to, and nothing..

This is one of the reasons for partnering with Ashbury Precision on the SH Edition Rifle.

We recommended a bunch of RPRs and they have served many well, but you run into a Friday Afternoon and Monday Morning version that would have their fair share of minor issues. Most of the time, rebuilding it fixed the small things, but at the same time we were rebuilding and remaking them into a semi custom version. We'd change the butt stock, the handguard along with other modifications. You start off paying $1000 and then $1500 later you had a very good rifle.

We do a similar thing to the Tikkas. All with no support from the companies.

With the APO Rifle we have support and QC that exceeds what you get from the other companies. It's a joint effort.

The RPRs are fine, just realize it is an entry level rifle and that means fewer eyes check it before it reaches your door. Mistakes happen.
