Hunting & Fishing Let’s start a coyote thread.

Walking back to my vehicle this morning I saw one in a field and decided to go back this afternoon. There were a pair on a round bale at 653 meters. Sorry 714 yards, I have to get used to saying that for when we get annexed.

Hit one in the right rib cage and he and ran to a broken bale about twenty yards away. When I was 175 yards away he got up and moved off again while I was setting up to finish him so I shot with my pack hanging off my arm and I think I got him in both back ankles. He went down again but was still around and took a third shot in the right eye when I got closer.

Sorry to be so graphic but he was a tough coyote and it was a rather eventful hunt!

We've had so many firearms prohibited here you couldn't get us to be violent if you tried.

Most people up here disagree but I wouldn't mind jumping on the winning team and getting that suppressor I've always wanted.

TWO DOG DAY ;)

The dry spell is finally over. After missing one yesterday, and not having shot a coyote in about a month, I opened up a can of whoopass on two today. One at 375 yards, and the second at 300.

6mm Creedmoor, 87 grain vmax MV 3405. Impact velocity approximately 2500 and 2670 fps respectively . The further one in the grass and weeds was DRT. The second one was hit a little far back and spun around, and I put a second round in it for good measure.

It took the coyotes several weeks before they started working on a dead cow. I'll be back there at daylight.

If there's a better bullet for coyotes at medium range... I am not aware of it.

Here’s my first coyote of night season in Illinois back in November. Biggest and best looking one I’ve ever gotten. 54LBs. 6mm creed. Zero trace of blood, could not even find the entry or exit would. Should have him back from the taxidermy around August.

Dude, 54lbs is a once in a lifetime coyote outside of that new York/ Pennsylvania area. Can't wait to see the mount. He's gorgeous too.

I have one more on trail cams behind my house that is very similar to this one. He’s smart. I tried stalking a few times. One of these days he will mess up, and come in closer than 1200 yards. But ya, they’re typically 30-35lbs. I was amazed when I got this one. Can’t wait to get the mount.

Here’s one I got on the run a little while back.
I never realized there was a coyote hunting thread. It’s addicting stuff with a thermal. It just sucks because it’s always so damn cold and windy here for night season. I missed one by about 6” at 700 yards with 20mph variable crosswinds a few weeks ago. I don’t usually take those long shots, but this one taunts me at 1000 yards all the time. He won’t come close. So I sent it.

Runner was at like 230-240 something. 2nd pic was at 450.

I actually just realized these were a thing. It is a wall mount. I will do a soft mount one of these days. Want to try a fox as I get very few “good” looking coyotes. I got about 10 fox this year though, and really love the way they look.

Stalked up to another one I saw drop in behind a bale to get away from the wind. I was able to line up behind another bale and close in undetected. Felt pretty sneaky.View attachment 8641774
Dude! Lol! Soon you’ll ditch the gun and go full “knife Rambo” at the yotes! Like from out of some hay bale trap door or leaping down from a tree! Nowhere will be safe!

Nice!

Man, it looked like the female threw a bucket of blood over her shoulder when you hit her. 🤣
Yeah, I hit a little high on the shoulder blade, which tends to leave a giant crater, and parts fly everywhere. Interestingly, if hit them head-on in the chest, or right behind the shoulder, the 75 ELDM acts like a varmint bullet. Small entrance, no exit, and dead right there.

I will be trying 22 creed on coyotes here soon too. I’ve been shooting 6CM with 108 eldM. Great results. Only one runner that was hit way off in the rear from the gnarly wind.

I will be using 80 VLD’s for the 22 creed. They are devastating, however I have yet to see a blood splash like your video. Ever. lol.

That looks like a Boyd's stock for your Savage Impulse. Correct?

Did you also add and ARCA rail to it? If so, which brand did you use?
Correct. I tried a few different Salmon River Solutions rails. This vid shows them both. The rail setup shown near the end is what I've been running the last year or so.

Armed only with a .22 rifle topped with a Leupold M7b-4x scope I stopped and took aim just as he started to trot off. I led him by a few inches as he was quartering away and held six inches over his head. At the shot he dropped and began wringing his tail.

He needed a finisher as the 38 grain American Eagle HP bullet broke his neck but he was still alive when I got to him. Looking it over I guess the distance to have been somewhere between 100 and 125 yards.

I’ve killed coyotes with just a .22 before but this one was the farthest shot on a coyote with which I have ever connected!

Last night, this one was just under 100yds and was flattened immediately, had another that hung up at 315 facing/sitting then trotted back to 422 before stopping broadside. Ranged and sent it, he did the spins for about 20 seconds and ran a ways before tipping. 16" suppressed .223, 77gr TMK/23.5gr 8208XBR.

I mean, if anything, she did the dog a favor since it was abandoned and would more than likely suffer a pretty harsh death otherwise. That is a rough area to try to make it as a feral. Too bad the people who abandoned the dogs weren't found and charged (to my knowledge, based off of the article).

Her ignorance however, is pure comedy gold.

The only thing she actually did wrong was plaster it all over social media. If you believe her story, and nobody does, she claims the dog approached her growling, miles from civilization. I would have shot it too, (again, her story is unlikely, but assuming it's true). If you have a gun and are approached by an aggressive dog, who appears intent on confrontation, any of us would shoot it. If I remember correctly, the aggression angle came about 3 days after the shooting, and about 2 days after she became the most hated person in America.

I've killed more than one stray out here that bristled up to me. One was actually significantly larger than the husky in the story (and was part of a pack of 4).

Big difference: No photos and social media 'hero' posts about it.

Feral dogs in packs are a bigger problem for me out here than coyotes.

I was bowhunting and was confronted by three Rottweilers. I topped the ridge with a crossbow and the three of them were close together and line-abreast.

Then they spread out like a pack that was going to attack at about 40-50 yards away and one of them barked.

I let out a yell and they all took off.

Fortunately, I had got rid of the coffee I drank earlier or would have had to drive back home to change clothes.

2 more on Monday at 421 and ~100 yards. The long one did the spins for a long time, the closer one was a bang flop. Then 2 more again last night at about 75yds and then at 354. The close one ran 20yds and the long shot was DRT. Onboard ballistics is an absolute game changer.

Wish I could post videos without having to host them somewhere, I got all 4 on video.

You using a Pulsar?

Yes, Thermion 2 XQ50 Pro LRF.
Me too. I hit a rabbit at 350 the other night using the ballistics but missed a coyote at 250 😂 I've been hunting for 5 years and still get wat to excited when they are coming in 😂 Another time I had two sitting in my wind at 500 yd and range finder gave me 350. Shot and missed, there was a slight rise in the field between us that I must have hit with the range finder.

Two dog morning.
20250330_092920.jpg

It's hard to get a sense of scale but the one I got center mass was big.
20250330_074432.jpg

I was thinking of posting this on one of those AI/hipster "ULTIMATE BUSHCRAFT SURVIVALIST ULTIMATE" groups that pop up advocating paracord bracelets and knives. I'm sure they'd love it.
20250330_090029.jpg

It was a 431 meter/471 yard head shot but in all honesty it wasn't intentional. He was sitting square to me and my laser targeting system got terrain behind him 486 meters/531 yards, probably because the beam is 34" wide at that distance and he was about a foot across.

This field has been pretty busy. The big guy was in a pack of three on one side and when I collected the little one on the other side "Limpy" whom I met last week climbed on a bale and watched me leave, ready for round two. I guess it's prime real estate and new packs move in when they have the opportunity.

Coyote hunting advocate Michael Huff says coyotes have a protective force field around them. I have seen it first hand lol.

And yeah I swear rangefinders are a double edged sword. Between catching "chaff" in front of the target as I call it (it's often actual chaff in a farmer's field), the reticle not being zeroed, the on board solver spitting out incorrect firing solutions for whatever reason, or the batteries dying they can drive you nuts.
