Looking for a target and hunting upper for the AR. Would like to keep it at 16" or 18". What are the pros/cons at this barrel length?

Edit: would be used on whitetail in the <250 yd range, antelope and other similar game to 350 or so.

I hunt with a 6.8 DD in 16". I have run them side by side from every maker I could think of. If your gonna hunt more and wanna short, light "pure hunting" stick. The 68 will serve you well. It loses hardly anything from 20-16". I don't think people should shoot a whitetail at much over 250yds with the 68, but I knew the exact dope for all my 6.8's and shot a 175lb spike last yr at 502yds with a DD 16" 68 and a Barnes 85gr TSX. It went down within 20yds. I own both and shoot both, in 16",18", 20". The 6.5 is better run with a longer barrel, and everyone has their opinion. I took my info from Bill Wilson from Wilson Combat. Your gonna get 100 different opinions anywhere you ask, just like any other caliber. The 6.8 is my favorite whitetail gun in WNC. If your shooting beanfields or 4-700yds, there's alot better options than either of these calibers. I hunt groundhog, whitetail, coyote, crows, ground squirrels, etc. And I own a stick for each scenario.

Most of the 90gr-120gr 6.8 bullets are designed to expand out to ~375yds, I haven't tried it yet though and I think that would be the most I'd ever use one for hunting, maybe a little less.

Using 6.8 SPCII/ARP chambers, 2.29"-2.30" COAL loads and several different good powders(I use AA2200), you can really get some awesome numbers out of a 16" 6.8.

I used to run a .264gARP with factory Hornady G ammo, it was a laser. I sold it after deciding on a 6.5CM for LR shooting and using the 6.8 more for deer busting. My hunting rig this year will be a 12.5" suppressed 6.8.

Anything inside 600yds, they are very close. Start getting past that and the .264/G will pull away due to better ballistics.

Bullet expansion is a function of the Kinetic Energy (KE) it impacts at. KE=(1/2)mV^2 Bullets of a specific mass(m) are designed to expand reliably to a specific velocity (V).

Alright engineer rant over. They are both great cartridges! They're really a wash out to 300 yards, beyond that the Grendel takes over. However, for ethical hunting purposes they're both really a wash out to 500 yards. Yes there are some who can push the beyond that for both cartridges. If you're one of those hunters, then the Grendel holds a clear advantage.

With barrel length being the same and bullet mass being the same (i.e. 16" barrels with 120-123gr bullets), the difference in velocity is really negligible. However, the 6.8 does take a slight edge, but it gives you no significant benefit.

The 6.8 is arguably more popular right now, with more manufacturers on board. However, the Grendel's popularity has increases exponentially over the last couple of years, despite everything that's been going on (see gun scare of '12-'13). I fully expect that to continue.

Conclusion, both great cartidges. It's going to be like car shopping. Eventually you sit in one and it's the one, it just fits you. This decision is very similar. Personally for me, the decision was a no brainer, the Grendel. I choice the one with better ballistics, that would allow me to stretch it out further.

Loaded ammo is fairly close in velocity, you can push the 6.8 quite a bit faster with handloads. AA wants to hold the max pressure on the Grendel to 52,000 psi.
The real problem is availability check it out before buying.

I have a Grendel and luv it. My brother has a 6.8 ya we are that competitve. As everyone has said for hunting they are pretty comparable, if you are really gonna hunt game animals past 500 yards Imo you should use a bigger cartridge.....6.8 has much better industry following. 6.5 is better at extreme distance due to high be bullets. With how hard it can get to find ammo or reloading supplies I would recommend the 6.8. I have the 6.5 and don't sleep well unless I have a bunch of ammo hoarded. If u reload do you own a 270 or a 260 or 6.5. I also have a 260 so that played a role in my choice of the grendel...for a deer rifle they are both much better than 223. For target I would prefer 6.5.

IMO, 6.8 is more reliable in a AR. I'd choose it for medium distances.

The grendel is designed around a longish barrel, the 6.8 around a shorter barrel.
When equal barrel lengths are considered it is close to a wash.
The 6.5 has higher BC bullets, but slower velocities (especially in a 16 to 18" gun).

The 6.8 has slightly smaller case head size, resulting in more real estate on the bolt face.

Hornady loads 70,000 psi proof loads for manufactures to test their barrels and bolts. Those loads will blow the primers and swell the case into the chamfer at the breech. They don't blow up barrels or break bolts. I wouldn't advise anyone to shoot those loads in their rifles. The loads we suggest are completely safe in better spec barrels and are capable of 1/2-3/4" groups. The fact that they can be that accurate should tell you they aren't that hot or they wouldn't be that accurate. Hundreds of guys on 6.8 forums use the loads and will tell anyone if they work or not. The fact that no one...not 1 person has broken a 6.8 bolt since 2007 when the forum started should also say something about the loads we suggest. Wilson Combat loads SPCII ammo that is in line with many of the loads. There was 1 guy who left pistol powder in his measure and mixed it with rifle powder. Even that only ruptured the case, it didn't blow the barrel. In 2006 Ko-Tonics received a batch of barrels with uneven and thick chrome lining in them, some of the barrels were blowing primers with factory ammo. After he went out of business we all figured out it wasn't just thick chrome, a number on the reamer print was transposed making a sharp 80 degree corner at the corner from the case neck to the freebore. That corner was shaving copper off the SSA "extreme" copper plated(not jacketed) bullet that formed a ring of copper. That ring was touching the ogive of the bullet causing a condition similar to what jamming the bullet into the lands would. It was factory ammo. Again it's clear you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Also the bolt reliability seems to be better with the 6.8....if you primarily intend to target shoot at 500+yds and reload then I'd recommend the Grendel but honestly at those ranges I'd use a totally different caliber.

The search feature is absolutely useless for cartridges/calibers as the descriptors are mostly too short and cause the search engine to complain ("Grendel" is one of the few exceptions).

The Grendel was designed as a hunting round with potential military applications. AA has been selling 14.5" to 20" guns from day one and your 24" long barrel. The Grendel works extremely well in shorter barrel to include 10" pistol barrels. The difference is generally 25 fps per inch.

When exactly in the history of the US Military has a new cartridge been adopted without adopting a new rifle adjacently??? Most of us know that the AR platform won't be changed, but in a change of cartridge program it can very well be altered to meet the requirements of the new cartridge.

You will enjoy having either or better, both. For me, the 6.8 was more available with firearm choices, and ammo availability locally and through internet ammo sources. Cabelas almost always has 6.8 ammo, and rarely has 6.5G for example. Out of a 16" barrel the 6.8 offers SSA 85 TSX Tactical SPC II ammo safely over 3k fps. SSA also offers 140 Gr Berger higher BC ammo for 6.8 fans who want to shoot longer ranges for target shooting. In between there are great ammo choices from SSA, Hornady, Federal, Remington, Wilson Combat, Sellier and Belloit, and Tula has a 6.8 practice ammo project on someone's desk that was put on hold temporarily during the rush.

6.8 and the G really brought the AR hunting capability and terminal performance up several levels above the 5.56.

6.8 manufacturers include RRA, Stag, DD, Ambush (DD hunting brand), LWRC (w PMAGs), Barrett, PSA, ARP, Wilson Combat, DPMS, WOA, Black Hole Weaponry, and others.

6.8 mags are easy to find online; PRI, Barrett, CPD, D&H, Magpul (LWRC, Six8 Receivers), ASC.

As I get more into reloading, I'll probably end up with a G as well.





I prefer the 6.8, but like the G. Not a Coolaid drinker.

And 6.8 is used by no one in the military because it is just as, if not more dangerous than the 6.5G when run heavily from an AR-15.

Both those rounds are piss poor military rounds or long range rounds so stop pretending like either mean shit in the big scheme of things. Both are decent options for hunting rigs built out of an AR-15....and thats about it.

The Grendel was designed as a hunting round with potential military applications. AA has been selling 14.5" to 20" guns from day one and your 24" long barrel. The Grendel works extremely well in shorter barrel to include 10" pistol barrels. The difference is generally 25 fps per inch.



When exactly in the history of the US Military has a new cartridge been adopted without adopting a new rifle adjacently??? Most of us know that the AR platform won't be changed, but in a change of cartridge program it can very well be altered to meet the requirements of the new cartridge.

The Grendel was designed as a Military and target rifle. Thats why the compound throat was added to the Grendel sometime after the Grendel was announced at shot show in January of 2004. Arne Brennan and a collegue noted in 2005 that they could not get accuracy from the 108/123 Scenar bullets that need to be within .005in of the lands. Bill Alexander got the compound throat from Lother Walter and shorted the throat with the compound double angle design. The scenar bullets didn't like the jump with the .120 neck but with the shorter compound throat they were able to get good accuracy from the scenars which were thought to be critical for military adoption. This decision crippled the velocity of most hunting bullets becasue it caused them to be loaded deeply in the case sacrificing velocity which is needed for terminal ballistics while hunting. Most hunting ammo is of the Spitzer design with a shorter nose. If it was designed as a hunting rifle Bill Alexander and team would have kept the .120 throat now released as the Grendel II which has much better velocity with hunting bullets.Saying it was designed for hunting is just Alexander Arms PR spin that came later because its military application wasn't realized. The shorter compound throat allowed them to get accuracy from the 108/123gr scenars and still keep accuracy of the 120gr Noslers and 129gr SST's Accuracy was kept but velocity lost. The 264 LBC and Grendel II both make much better Hunting rifles becasue they lack the compound throat that cripples the velocity of hunting bullets. Since 2005 more bullets have been released and mags that allow loading to 2.3in which makes the orginal design of a .120 throat used in the Grendel II and or 264 LBC more advantagious to MSR Hunters. I'm getting 2780fps from a 120gr Nosler and over 3000fps from the 100gr Nosler BT. Thats 150fps faster than the SAAMI shorter compound throat. I can load a 120gr Nosler to 2.3in but the SAMMI grendel only allows the Nosler to be loaded down around 2.23 or so depending on the barrel maker. Here is a list of hunting bullets that can be loaded out further in the 264LBC and Grendel II that will give much better performance that it the Target rifle designed SAAMI chamber.

Not that the SAAMI Grendel is not an effective hunting rifle it is its just that its not as effective at the 264 LBC or Grendel II which will provide better velocity with handloads loaded for the longer throat with most hunting bullets. Due to the fact they made the trade off loosing velocity of hunting bullets for better accuracy of the paper puncher scenar bullets shows hunting was not the orginal intended application.
