LMT .308 MWS

I’ve been wanting one of these for a while. One of my dream guns. Deciding between this and a Scar 20s
The LMT is what floats MY boat. There is so many small differences out there (won’t go into alllll that here), but I love the standard black well built stick that LMT (for one, priced good, but you pay for the goods) does. Don’t know if it will be different later, I think the MWS will always stay a special “it” for me. The buddy I mentioned earlier actually has that FN SCAR 20S in the Limited Edition case included kit setup they did. Here’s a pic of that:

Fast question: What weapon cleaning protocols are easily the best for DI AR-10’s. What items or kits out there are best. Currently/chemically I like and use Miltec products on my Dan Wesson 45’s, so will use Miltec on this LMT also. Tks in advance......I know, super dumb to ask kinda, I’ll read up manual and other resource.

LMT has 20" ss .243 and .338 Federal barrels on sale for $275 right now-just a heads up. I've been trying to convince myself of either but can't seem to do it. I don't seem to be very good at the modularity part of the MWS system as whenever I buy another barrel I end up buying a new upper and lower to use it in.

.243 would be a nice barrel to have though

those of you with extra barrels (I've a 20" ss that I bought but came with the 16" cl), are you changing the scope when you swap barrels? Also, are you seeing any poi change when you swap the barrels back and forth?

Can't help-but I'm curious as well. I was thinking of doing it this summer-I may just take the barrel off and re-mount it to look for POI change.

I went from SS .308 16" to the 20" 6.5 CM and was within .5 mils elevation and dead on for windage.

Not to hijack the thread but two quick questions if I can:

1) Switching from .308 to 6.5 CM is just a barrel change, right?
2) Are you using the same 7.62/.308 magazines?

Thanks!

For those asking about poi shift, My mws has a repeatable 1.5 moa elevation and 1 moa Windage shift when swapping between a 16” cl and 18” ss barrel. I did the swap 3x and it was the same each time. Ymmv

I was finally able to shoot a couple of groups with the 20" SS .260 Rem barrel I picked up for my MWS and they looked very promising. I also checked on getting one of the .243 Win barrels and those were shown as out of stock on LMT's website Monday. My MWS came with the 16" CL .308 Win barrel. I've modified it with a Magpul PRS stock, .308 rifle length spring and buffer. I'm not very good precision shooting with this platform yet, but so far the .308 set-up will hold under an inch with FGGM 168s and hot military 150s and reloads. I haven't been able to get any good loads to work as well with 155s or 175s

LMT had recommended Black Hills Gold Match so I tried that first. I was a little skeptical that the 1-9 twist would stabilize the long 139 gr. Lapua bullet from the old boxes I had; however, it produced a nice round group of about one and a quarter MOA in a gusting 5 - 15 mph crosswind. Current production lists the 140 gr. Hornady ELD at 2700 fps, and my Chrono indicated 2669 fps from the 20" barrel. I didn't get much better accuracy out of my GAP custom .260, which is why I still have most of this case on hand.

Next I tried the Berger Match ammo using the 130 gr. Hybrid OTM Tactical bullet that was specially designed for use in semi-auto match rifles. Accuracy for this ammo was good with the first three rounds going into a long diagonal hole, before the MWS jammed on the fourth round. After clearing the jam, the next round dropped low spoiling the group and the last round joined the first three. Berger lists the muzzle velocity for their load at 2847 fps. This was the second time I tried this ammo and the second time it jammed on the fourth round out of five being loaded into a ten-round Magpul Gen-3 magazine. It also failed to lock open after the last round fired.

Finally, I tried some handloads that I keep on hand for my GAP .260 using 123 gr. Lapua Scenars over 44.0 gr. of Hodgdon 4350. My Rem 700 based GAP custom easily groups 5 under 0.50" when I do my part and has occasionally produced some 0.2s and 0.3s with this load. Muzzle velocity was 2886 fps from the 20" MWS versus an average 2958 fps from the 23" barreled GAP custom Rem 700. Unfortunately, the MWS didn't like this load any better than the Black Hills Gold Medal, and it had one flier about 2 MOAs high. It too failed to lock open after the last round, although there were no actual jams.

I'm curious if anyone else has had jamming issues using the .260 or .243 barrels or if it may be the AR-10 spring and buffer that are causing that issue?

LMT is running a smoking sale right now, just got the LM8 MARS-H Carbine for $1,999, shipped. Regularly price: $2700.

Just to hard to resist that nearly 30% discount.

:)
THAT is the DEAL, .....REAL deal. Spec’d mine out from them and had to have a dealer make the special order spec’d out to get it the way I wanted with a heavy barrel and battle rifle upper....felt good getting it for $2500 the way I wanted it.

You don’t even have go thru the dealer to order just pick it up from on this deal.

Really great price if someone wants it this is it.

What was your rifle’s overall weight?

FWIW I only shoot factory ammo-Hornady 140gr ELD match- and have had good success-sub MOA for me on most days. 147gr will be next no doubt.

How’s she shootin’ for ya’? Still waiting for funds to glass mine (shown earlier this thread)...not hurting to wait a bit and learn/read all the scope stuff in The Hide for sure. ?on the new stick.
It's shooting great! I'm actually shooting an F class match this weekend, it's y first match ever and it 's close, I'm just going to have fun and shoot to the 1k mark for the first time.

South American MWS & XH Buffer: For Answer

(my old slick MWS is undergoing some changes, will provide details as that project matures)

gg&g bipod?

Given the lmt is somewhat overgassed, is there that much difference in felt recoil going from a 16 inch (.308) to the rifle length gas system of an 18 or 20 inch? Have people noticed a decrease in overgassing/malfunctions with suppressor use either?

Sorry if I am getting into nit-picky territory, just trying to get all the "facts" I can.

I never shot my 16 inch barrel so I can't say on that, however running factory Gold medal match 175, and mag tech match 168 suppressed with the 20 inch, I have a perfect brass pattern, no noticeable gas in the face, and not a single failure in about 150 rounds so far. Its been absolutely flawless. I have owned 25-30 other semi auto 308s and I can tell you this is definitely in the top 3, but it has a lot more testing to be done as I haven't gotten into hand loading yet and pushed it to 1000+ like I have the others. When the rounds hit the 2600 FPS mark, most "factory" semi autos that don't have adjustable gas tend to crap the bed and start shredding brass, having feed issues etc, although on the other side of things, that's really where they shine on accuracy and 1000+ yards.
