LMT .308 MWS

So I've been looking on getting a Silent captured spring for my LMT Mars-H since I love them in my AR-15's. Doing some research it seems like I need the H3 buffer weight version, and some sort of spacer to put behind the spring since the LMT's have longer buffer tubes? The only measurements I've seen for the spacer are .987″ in diameter and .720″ long.

Can anyone who has done this help me confirm? Or is there a simpler way?
They have an ar10 version. I'd assume it wouldn't need any spacer in a 308 RE. If lmt is any longer then sr25 or dpms it's the first I've heard of it.

Your probably looking at people trying to use a ar15 scs in a 308 RE.

The MWS extension is the same length as the SR-25, Armalite, Vltor A5

To clarify, its a factory Mars-H, and like JSP556 said I'm pretty sure its an intermediary length similar to the Vltor A5 system, where its longer then a carbine buffer but shorter then a Rifle buffer. Since I posted it I've been looking into it more, and I think JP Enterprises may have fixed the issue with this:

https://www.jprifles.com/buy.php?item=JPSCS2-SPACER-A5

I emailed JP Enterprises to confirm, but no response yet.

Or am I just confused and does the AR-10 version fix that on its own?

H-265 Flat Dark Earth is right on the money. Guess which is factory and which one I sprayed/baked.

Working to convert an all black MWS to fde right now. Do you remember what ratio you painted yours at to get the gloss level to match? Also, can you recommend anyone that can also do the color fill on the safety selector icons? Ideally would like to find a shop that can also re-etch the engraving on the upper too if anyone can chime in or suggest a place.

I believe it was 18:1 and color fill we just did with white and red cerakote, dabbed in the selector engravings with a toothpick. Engravings I took pics of before when it was all black and scaled and cleaned them up in Photoshop for the shop to laser. Didn’t take a ton of power to burn through the cerakote.

Awesome, appreciate the reply. For the engravings, do places just need a png / jpg to scale for them? First time doing a project like this. Also, what shop did you use? Might just use yours if they're taking business since they've done this before

If they’re good, I guess that’s all they could go off - I used a reference object in my photos to scale properly and I prepped a clean file for them to convert to vectors. Was at Legion Arms in Pittsburgh, they’re pretty good with the laser.

After 14 months, I received my replacement MWS from LMT since the one I purchased was out of spec. Little disappointed to say the least, especially given the wait time... The upper has a minor, albeit visible ding on the rear of it, but more importantly, the lower receiver looks like it was machined by a drunk person. Am I crazy for asking LMT to replace at least the lower? Has anyone else experienced missing material and excessive material in different areas on their lower like this?

Photos here, along with my older MWS (which has none of these issues) next to it for reference:

I’ve been wanting to pick up an LMT MRP-L 9.25” Quad but this thread, along with /r/LewisMachineTool has definitely curbed my enthusiasm. No one seems to be getting products they are happy with between upper and lower receiver blemishes, or out of spec bolts and barrels. Add in the huge wait times people seem to be stuck with for CS to rectify any problems it seems this just isn’t a good time to buy LMT stuff. Kinda bummed. Now that I have LMT money, LMT not only isn’t available anywhere but if I do get one it seems to be a crapshoot as to if it will be a quality product.

That should be a blem lower in my opinion

I just finished piecing this together from different vendors and didn't have any problems. Just luck of the draw. Sad to see so many bad parts slip through.

I finally got the upper for the OD Green kit I ordered back in 2020... It took a while but looks good.

The 13.5" 308 LW SS is noticeably gassier than the 20" 6.5CM barrel.

I have an RC2 in ATF jail. What is the best buffer and spring option for mitigating the felt recoil? What spring are people finding works best with the XH buffer? Is the JP system any better or worse?

I don’t have any experience with BRT gas tubes; how long does the custom port size last before eroding to a larger size?
Asking since I have a Zev-10 Small Frame with a non-adjustable gas block I’d like to suppress and these look like a great option for tuning since I won’t be able to mess with the BCG or the buffer/spring very much.

I would try it stock with the RC2 before changing anything.
I have the 16” SS barrel, not the 13.5”, but mine runs smoothly with no excess gas with my SF RC.
Gun is as received from LMT.
If after trying it stock with the can mounted you feel the need to make changes, the BRT gas tube is a much better option than a heavier buffer or spring.
Heavy buffers are a band aid solution to an overgassed gun.

My two cents on the recoil situation.

308 simply recoils more than 6.5. All other things the same, if you swap a 308 barrel for 6.5, there’s noticeably less recoil.

Your options to reduce recoil are a muzzle brake, adjust gas block / BRT tube, or buffer weights and springs.

I put an adjustable on one of my factory barreled 556 guns, put a light buffer in it, and it’s like shooting a pellet gun.

What's everyone running for optics these days? My current MWS with a 20" 6.5 CM barrel, DMR stock, and Vortex 4.5-27x is a benchrest log and great for what I built it for, but I'm looking to make this next build more battle rifle and mobility inspired. Will have a 16" 6.5 CM barrel, and carbine stock. ATACR 1-8x would be great for weight, but I feel like I'm neutering the platform at 8x power.

S&B 5-20 US belongs on the large frame gassers!

I was hoping to have a brake on it. I'm the bonehead who sent you the SF comp to pin and had to send a Warcomp to get it to 16".

I was hoping there was some magic spring/buffer combo, but sounds like I need to pick up a BRT.

That's a US Optics FDN 17x on my 13.5 above.

Looks big with the sunshade (it is) but under 30 oz. With the Sopmod, Mlok, and 13.5 LW it's not bad at all. With a piggyback/offset red dot, I think it will be perfect.

I have a Razor 1-10 on my Mars-L. I don't think it would be enough on the MWS.

Nice,

Unless something has changed with the JP SCS in the last couple years, the 13.5 inch barrel runs too hard for it. With that being said, I run Slashes XH and Spring combo and a Dead Air 2 Port break and I really can't tell the difference when shooting it back to back with my ACC.

Practically a 1-8 ATACR weighs the same as a 3-18/w offset RMR class optic. If you want something a little more field friendly, I would suggest a red dot and magnifier combo that can be pulled when not in use. Once you start mounting 2lb optics and lights, and bipods, the idea of mobility inspired kind of gets tossed into the river.

Here’s LMT’s official response… not impressed to say the least after waiting 14 months for a working gun:

Might need to play around with an exps3 + g45... will report back

Received my complete 20" .308 today. Fit and finish is great.

I didn't pull it apart, but zeroed it and ran about 75 rounds through it. Gun stovepipes and is failing to feed once every 10 rounds or so, but seems to be running smoother w/ every round. I broke it down and cleaned and lubed everything afterwards, so we'll see.
TBH, most of my other ARs have done this to me when new. 🤷‍♀️

Smacked the 12" gong at 600 20-30 times in some wind w/ cheap PPU 165g so I'm happy for now.

I had similar issues when my gun was new... I stopped using pmags and lancers, I switched to D&H 20 round mags and added a tubbs 308 flatwire spring to slow down the cyclic rate. My rifle ran 100% better after those changes. I haven't had a single problem since then. I think you owe it to yourself to try the tubb 308 spring. It's not expensive and makes a big difference IMO.

Coincidentally, he just reached out to me after I posted a Reddit thread. Very responsive and looks like he's going to hopefully take care of me.
Can you define “take care of”? I’m supposed to received a stripped LM308 lower next week from V1 and they sent me a picture of it yesterday after I saw your pictures and it has the same flaw behind the mag release.

Take care of = take my blem lower receiver back and send me one that isn't messed up. Hopefully within a couple weeks, not years. The line behind the mag release is pretty subtle, it's just the square gouge below the takedown pin that's painfully obvious in real life.

I believe every non MARS 308 lower has that, due to how the forging is made and finished. Its pretty much unnoticeable in reality and if you do take issue with it LMT is not going to care/fix that.

I can't decide on optics either. Currently running an ATACR 4-16x42 on my 20'' 6.5 creed. I like it, but sometimes wish for a little more power on the top end. I've got a 16'' lw ss barrel upper that I haven't decided what optic to use yet. Seems like the vortex 1-10 would be the best choice but how often am I really going to be blasting .308 on 1x power? I might throw the 4-16 with an offset rmr on the 16'' and see how it balances.

I had to check mine, one of mine has the mark and the other is clean. Both are standard mws lowers.

Great looking build. Out of curiosity, is anyone using a roller cam pin on their MWS? Since the upper is monolithic, I have an increased interest in preserving the life of my upper, but wanted to see if I'm trying to find a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

I would imagine you would wear out barrels and other parts before the cam pin wear ruins your receiver. Keep it lubed

Question for those with experience with the LMT MWS...

Other than the Out-Of-Stock LMT BCG, what are the good options for a BCG? I know about the SOLGW branded BCG, but it's also OOS.

I see that there are several options on the Primary Arms website. Would one of these be okay until I can find an actual LMT BCG?

Here's the list of 308 BCGs on Primary Arms: Primary Arms 308 BCGs

Thanks!

I'm running a Fulton Armory BCG with zero issues on a 16" SS LW barreled LM8 upper.

Absolutely, yes. Gotta use shims if you don't want the muzzle device recessed on a 16" barrel.
Bringing a slight update for those looking to use one of the longer 7 M-Lok slot uppers with a 16" barrel. As @jwramp previously shared, 16" barrels previously did not have enough clearance for muzzle devices to be used with suppressors without being trimmed down. This was my experience with my longer upper as well; however, I have received an additional extended upper from the latest batch, and they appear to have slightly shortened the rail to allow full functionality with 16" barrels. Pretty cool to see LMT engineering at work. Photos below comparing my two uppers:

When and where did you get the new upper? I heard they were going to be making this change but didn't realize they had been released again. Too bad they didn't get rid of the QD socket while they were at it.

Direct from LMT as part of a 14+ month wait for a comparable replacement on a faulty upper. Received last Saturday. I personally don't like the QD socket at all, but figure it was part of the spec list from whatever contract solicited the longer upper in the first place.

Does anyone have comparable wear pics of their upper? Searching the plethora of internet posts on cam pin wear leads me to understand this is common, especially with overgassed guns (like the MWS), but that it poses no real issue. Curious to hear if any gunsmiths or high round count users have thoughts on the wear or roller cam pins:
