I've been using a magnetospeed V3 for a little over a year. Shortly after getting it and using it on a wiser precision mount - I got a projectile strike on the bayonet. I got complacent and didn't double check the spacing. My fault entirely.

Anyways - I've been using the unit almost weekly ever since with no issues, until recently.

About a month ago I was shooting and it started giving me "sensor" errors, and cutting off, and doing other funky things. I changed the batteries which helped me get through the rest of the session. I took note that it was over 95 degrees outside.

next time out a week later, also hot as hell - same problem. So now i'm trying to figure out WTF.

I take it out a third time (on a much cooler day) - no issues.

next outing - 95+ degrees - issues again. shade moves over me - issues go away. what the hell? heat should not have any affect on the function of the unit.

I email Ryan and he confirms heat should not have any affect.

I take it out again on 95+ degree day and unit is acting crazy. sensor errors, crazy speeds high and low, cutting off. so i email Ryan again and he answers me ASAP. I let him know the problem is persistent and not going away, can i send it in for him to look at. I finally mention the projectile strike from last year. He immediately says "yup, that's your problem - seen it many times. and it usually is delayed months before user starts seeing issues.

my best theory is that the imperfections/cracks caused by the projectile strike are made worse when the unit is extremely hot. when the bayo is cool and not "expanding" from the hot days - the issues don't surface. I could be wrong - but it definitely appears temperature sensitive. but only because of the existing imperfections in the bayonet from the strike

so - in short - if you have a bayo strike and the unit is still functioning for you - just beware that it might give you problems down the road. Replacement bayonets are $182 shipped. expensive mistake.

Always double check your spacing!

shout out to Ryan at Magnetospeed for being responsive. New bayo ordered today.

If using the 123s and the head gets jarred it will do what your saying...some thin foam tape on the inside of the battery cover fixes that.

Try setting the sensitivity to medium...I’ve had mine for about 3-4yrs and use it A LOT...it stopped picking up rounds Sunday set it to medium and working fine again.

I'm sure you are not the first call or the last with that problem Ryan has had. Thanks for sharing the information, probably more than one person reading this has had a strike and sounds like it is a problem waiting to happen.

yeah, that's why i wanted to post it. I know a few guys who have gotten projectile strikes and it hasn't cause any issues....yet.

so I just wanted to let everyone know in case they have had a strike, and if not - to remember why it's important to always check spacing even if you think you bayonet didn't move (because they use a mount or something).

i got so used to just throwing my wiser mount on and off and it lining up perfectly so i stopped checking spacing. eventually the little set wheel loosened up and the bayo shifted upward a hair. boom - strike.

Raising this thread for help figuring out my magnetospeed issue.

It's been acting funny lately and yesterday wouldn't pick up a bullet at all. Then is was giving me an error message... something about bayonet connection or something....

I emailed their customer service but thought someone may know more info here so...

Im just curious to why you need to use a chronograph on a weekly basis?
Endless load development? New factory ammo every time you go to the range? 52 rifles you need to check muzzle velocity on?
Like I wrote, just curious.

I usually bring a chronograph to track what my ammo does over time on different days, in different weather conditions, and as the barrel ages.

I also experiment occasionally with things such as different neck tensions, different AMP annealing settings, different primer seating depths, etc. to see how that has an effect on performance. Velocities and velocity stability (ES/SD), is part of that.

I personally find that information interesting, but I can see how it's not for everyone.

Double checking speed before every match I was shooting. Mixed in with load dev and different rifles. I also check speed before every match. Even if it’s a known load

It's something with the bayonet I think, it's never been shot before or anything. It stays on my wiser mount and gets knocked around a little in my truck but nothing crazy. No signs of anything what so ever on the outside of the bayonet or connection.

Allright, thats some thurough work.
I never felt the need to check things that often, but then again before Covid I probably shot 5-6 competitions a year, this year its been down to one single competition.

I started getting sensor 2 errors. Am told this is a strike

Looks like a strike to me. Not a bad one, but a strike nonetheless

What’s funny is after I made this thread my dumbass did it again and obliterated my bayonet at the PRS finale train up day.

Instead of buying a new one, a friend gave me his lightly struck bayonet and it’s worked fine for two years 🤷🏻‍♂️

I didn't even know there was 2 places you could plug in on the bayonet until I had an issue and talked to the MS folks. (Who were awesome CS btw). If it's within the 2 year period and you can show that you paid for it, even if that was to another guy you bought it off of, they will warranty it. That experience is the main reason I stay with MS vs LR
