Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

I'd like to buy a Mark II TR but they are kind of hard to find right now. I did find a FV at Dicks Sporting Goods thats on sale right now for $239. It comes as an exclusive package at Dicks which includes an olive green synthetic stock, fluted barrel, a cheap Chinese scope and rings and a satin blue finish. It would appear the same barreled action as the TR except for the satin finish and minus the extended bolt handle.

Would it be reasonable to assume it should shoot as well as the TR for less money invested?

Let me know what you think, I believe the sale ends tomorrow so I have to act fast.

Thanks,
FIREDOG

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

buy the FV and dont look back. I did that this past year and ended up with a Wallis Forge stock. The only think you are missing out on is the bolt handle. They can be had for a affordable price from many sources including several guys here on the site. For the price it absolutely cant be beat!

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

I pulled up the rifles at Buds, the problem is they are listing it as the LR and its showing the old style bolt handle. Thats the problem I run into shopping around, they make so many variations of the rifle its hard to price shop.

I could live with the standard bolt handle and the OD green stock as long as its shoots as well as the TR.

Thank you for the input, keep the replies coming.

Especially from the 200 yard plus shooters.

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

If the TR is what you want then wait till you can find it to buy exactly that. If you need/want the rifle sooner then it would seem you are going to have to make some compromises. But as far as I see it, most MkII's shoot well regardless of their configuration, so if you are okay with how the FV sits, you should be alright. As it has been said above, you can always add the other stuff later on. I'm all about saving money, so going cheaper now and adding what you want/need later sounds like a really smart way to go from the way I see it.

If I were in your situation I would jump all over the sale at Dick's Sporting Goods. It's a great buy at an incredible price and should do what you want of it. Hope this helps.

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

I have an FV. I have only fired it at 25 and 50, but it produced amazing groups right out of the box.

This is the first target I ever shot with it. The top two are 5 round groups and the rest are 10 round groups at 25 using a bipod and rear bag. As you can see by the bottom groups, it whooped @ss in no time.

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

Im looking at getting the TR in .22 for the following reasons.

1. Barrel/Action are painted vs blued.
2. Extended bolt knob is already done,
3. Tacticool style stock default

I thought about the FV but by the time I install a bolt knob and tacticool stock, and painted it, Im in deeper then if I would have just bought the TR from the beginning.

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

Yeah, I think I'm going to go ahead and pick up the FV. If I buy this model I probably won't upgrade it except for a 20 MOA rail and stick my Bushnell 3200 Elite 10X scope on it. I already have a Harris bipod also and a butt stock bag.

I agree its not cost effective to retro it to a TR. But I think it will get me into the long range game for now. If it works out my son will probably end up with it after I locate a TR later. Now the bigger problem is findong somebody with the rail in stock.

Thanks guys, good shooting.

My new FV is the 1 5/8" ejection port. Make sure you measure first. I have seen a lot of mixed info on what models come with what ejection port.

From what I have gathered the 1 5/8" ejection port is off the Model 93 receiver, and older mk ii's had a 1 3/8" ejection port; Savage is consolidating their product line and using the same receiver across the board for their rimfire stuff. Newer MK II's I assume will have the same ejection port pattern as the Model 93's.

I think it is all "E Receiver" models.

It will certainly do that. I bought the MKII FVT some years back so I'd have the option of Peeps or Scope, and have been very pleased with my rifle in both configurations. The MKII FV will make a fine long range .22 rifle.

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

Well I picked up the FV today. Threw the Chinese scope on it and the bipod just for a picture. I have got to get online Monday to see if I can pick up an MOA rail and see how it shoots.

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

You can't help but to like these rifles. They're just plain ol' no nonsense accurate rifles IMHO. They get the job done. I wonder if DIP has any of the 25 MOA bases in stock yet for these MKII FV's? If not, EGW should have the 20 MOA base.

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

Your gonna' like the FV, Firedog. Put the EGW rail on & have at it. I changed the stock on my FV to a Boyd's Tactical after I bought my TR. It does make a difference! As far as the difference between the two rifles, it's little or none out to 200 yds. I do want to put a larger bolt knob on the FV, but the OEM unit works pretty good for now.

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

Thanks for all the input, I've been calling around, I still can't find a mount. Midway and Optics Planet and a few others are out of stock.

I was wondering, I have 80 clicks of vertical movement in my scope, 40 up and 40 down. If I obtain a 100 yard zero do you think I would have enough movement in the scope to make it out to 200 without a 20 MOA base?

I'm going to try using CCI standard velocity ammo first. I did measure my injection port, its 1 5/8. Apparently I need to order a model 93 base.

Take care,

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

Yeah I didn't order a 93 base for my FV and it's a tiny bit off, but the shells still eject fine. Just keep checking back. They are always in and out of stock. Right now I'm just using the mils to fire at 300.

Re: Mark II TR or Mark II FV?

Theres an outfit in Colorado called Prairie Arms and they show 31 mkii tr's in stock, priced at $383-ish. Just a heads up in case anyone is still looking. I've seen them priced at $407 and $455 so Prairie Arms has a good price. Whether or not they are a good outfit to deal with, I'll find out soon enough.
