Well this is my first attempt at a mauser action chassis.
This took about 10 hrs total from design to where im at now.
It was a mess... Our cnc went down a day before I started this project, so all work was done on the old Bridgeport mill.
I threw a crappy Remington scope I had from a sps varmint combo.... So what do you guys think so far???

Re: Mauser Chassis

Nice.

I have two magnum FN mausers that I need to get around to building on...

Shame there are so few parts to set up a great action like that.

Re: Mauser Chassis

Nifty! We're in the early (stalled) stages of making a few AICS type chasis's for the Mauser actions. But its gonna be all manual work and time hasn't been a commodity we're currently enjoying excessive amounts of.

Great work though, thanks for sharing!

Re: Mauser Chassis

Yeah.. Im just starting to attempt the AICS mauser build now. This chassis was a milk run of sorts, to try and sort out everything first.

My schpeal:
Imagine a spectrum of 100 bolt action designs with the Mauser at the complicated end and the Rem700 at the inexpensive to manufacture end of the spectrum. The Howa is in the middle.

The 98 Mauser has:
1) flat bottomed receiver to take torque from rifling
2) controlled feed
3) claw typed extractor
4) safety on firing pin, often modified to be 2 or 3 position M70 type
5) multi stage gas filter on firing pin hole for safety
6) bolt handle is integrally forged as part of bolt body
7) safety lug below rear bridge
8) integral recoil lug
9) knife ejector in bolt lug slot
10 an inner C ring to put the tenon threads in compression

The rem 700
1) receiver made from round tubing
2) push feed
3) little wimpy extractor
4) safety on trigger
5) simple bolt
6) bolt handle tacked on with screw and solder
7) nothing for safety if bolt lugs fail.
8) recoil lug is a modified washer that is captured by the receiver and barrel
9) plunger ejector
10) No inner C ring, so the only thing holding the barrel to the receiver is the tenon threads in tension

Of the ~100 bolt action covered in the above book, they seem to all be on the spectrum somewhere between the simple Rem700 and the complex 1898 Mauser design.

The Howa 1500:
1) flat bottom receiver
2) push feed
3) short claw extractor is bigger than rem, but smaller than M98
4) three position bolt safety
5) simple bolt
6) Integral bolt handle
7) nothing
8) integral recoil lug
9) plunger ejector

I would give the Howa Mauser scale = ~50% Mauser
I would give the Howa Rem700 scale = ~50% Rem700

What does it all mean?
Similar in the interface with your Mauser action chassis, but there are other details.

Pardon me for saying it but....

Re: Mauser Chassis

Jake,

What trigger?

What type of aluminum billet did you use and where to get it?

That's pretty damn awesome I think. I was thinking of doing some drop-in aluminum bedding blocks for Mausers. But, now that I see the chassis I see that may be an even better option.

It is only similar in action style and design, not features or components....

Re: Mauser Chassis

Not this one... The chassis im working on now will fit the AI skins. I just took this one out today shoots pretty well using factory 100gr ammo. Max spread just under .375" with 2 of the 3 round group through the same hole.

Re: Mauser Chassis

I have an old 1960s era FN Browning Mauser in 300 win mag and I would buy a chasis for that rifle that takes detachable mags in a heartbeat!

Heck...I would probably get 2 just in case I ever broke the first one.

I love Mauser rifles but it is tough to work with them due to parts availability...like DBM systems.

Re: Mauser Chassis

Im in the same boat as you.. I love the Mauser 98 platform but there is just nothing out there by way of Precision/Tactical parts.
