Interesting article in American Rifleman I got today about 103 recreations of Mawhinney's M40, which is on display at the Marine Corps Museum.

Anyone seen one in person? $5,000 seems pretty steep for an M40... but it is pretty nice looking. Not on my shopping list, but interesting nontheless.

I'd look for a Remington M40 Commemorative and buy a badger base and rings. It would be the same thing and cost a lot less.

Yes it would. But it would also never be fired by a legend in the community and would never be worth the $$$ that these rifles will command.

I have seen most of these rifles and they are very nice, well built, accurate sticks.

Well, I guess I cant argue with you too much there. I want a Van Orden Sniper for some reason and it's no different that any other M70 Target, other than who sold it.

Sorry, but regardless of who fired it, I find it hard to believe these rifles 'need' to be sold at $5k per, IMO. I'm also not a collector, so I'll grant that some people don't mind parting with that kind of money for an item they see as being "valuable", but I shoot all of my guns, and one little, tiny scratch, ding, or nick in the /wood/ stock, and you will never begin to recoup your 'investment'. Still, I wish Chuck the best in his sales.

These rifles have been on the market for a while and quite a few have already been sold. Its quite a lot different than the M40 commerative sold in the past, what you are buying is basically a custom built M40 that is comparable to those built by folks like Mike Lau.

First of all I want you all to know I would be the last person on earth to hurt a persons feelings. But this is the way I look at it. First of all I am aVet of the Viet Nam war,and I have been in the heat of battle many times. I also know, that when a USMC SCOUT SNIPER moves into the terratory the enemy has a tendency to move out. And for this, if Chucks M40 cost $10,000 I would still buy one, to help my brother in any way I can. We all sit around our computers and talk about this sniper rifle, and that sniper rifle, and not for a minute do we consider the man on the end of that stick. His dedication and service to his fellow MARINES goes far beyond the call of duty.

It's one of those rifles that I want... bigtime.

A few years ago, I had a chance to buy one of the certified Desert Storm Barret's for $10K. I hesitated. Ultimately did not buy. Regretted it since. Now they are $20K plus. And almost impossible to find.

So not out of the hunt... but it's still one that I vascillate on.

Doc, based on your service (and the fact that the snipers probably saved thousands of lives on the battlefield), I totally understand your motivation to have one. I hope you get one! Post pix when you do.

I read the article. would love to have one of these rifles. whether the price is too high or not, I frankly can't afford it. There are some noticeable differences between this rifle and the Remmy commemorative mentioned in the article. For example, the twist rate.

They don't say much about the scope, other than it's a Redfield (i.e Leupold these days). It looks like a straight up $200 Revolution scope that was green anodized.

If I ended up with one of these, it'd have to be a shooter. My investment would lose value at a rapid pace.

Yeah, that is unclear. Looks like the rifles shoot very well from the groups in the photographs. From a practical standpoint, the twist rate would not bother me ... but, you would always know that it had the "wrong" twist ...

Seems like they also mentioned that this rifle has the clip slot in the article.

If someone is looking for exact authenticity, I tend to think this rifle still isn't it. For one thing, the scope won't be right. Nevertheless, it's a piece that I'd love to own if I had the $$ for it. The Mawhinney signature and other memorabilia would be very valuable to me.

This is one of those things, that if you don't already understand why it's worth what it's worth, then no one on the face of the planet will be able to convince you.

I have several items in my collection that folks would shake their head at. They just don't get it. However guys that do will pay.

I wish I had the cash to pick one up. Once they are gone....they are gone. Chuck sights in each of those rifles. So you kind of have to factor that in.

1-12 twist is correct for an M40.

Actually it is not, 1-10 is the correct twist for the M40, it been well documented.

1-12 twist is correct for an M40. </div></div>

My bad, you are correct. It was specified as 1-10" twist.

Not to stray too far, but I presume the change was made to 1-12 when the conversion was made to the A1, or was it later?

FIRST HAND ACCOUNT of my CM Sniper rifle:
I have a pretty extensive USMC SPEC Sniper rifle collection. I Started out wanting an M40A1 for nostalgic reasons and it just went crazy from there. Anyhow, I own a Chuck Mawhinney Sniper rifle # 70 something, the number doesnt matter. It was $5000 and I paid cash to avoid any other charges. It seemed like alot of money then and to be honest it still seems like alot of money now. Regardless, I feel like I bought a piece of history as the legendary CHUCK MAWHINNEY zerod this rifle! He also wrote some things in the data book that personalizes the rifle for me. It shoots really well and I love it. It is a capable weapon! I removed the original signed bottom metal and replaced it with another one, as to not damage the signiture. I have also removed the stock and will be replacing it with a SPS take off. So I can use it without feeling like I have to baby it.

EVERYONE that I shoot with begs to shoot it. However, only 1 other person has shot it besides MR. Mawhinney and I. A close friend and fellow 8541 from back in the day.

Take a look at the pictures and enjoy. Whatever your motivation is to own one of these rifles, do it, buy one while they are available to be purchased directy from the Mawhinneys.

For those of us who have deliverd "long range precision fire at select targets from concealed positioins in support of combat operations" or bear crawled across the hot parade deck to "find a pole", memorized how many stairs from the chow hall to the classroom, or were forced to do "25 and 5" during an already long day, this rifle will have a different meaning. I am sure this rifle will exceed its $5000 value to all of us SNIPERS of yesterday and today alike.

Twoman ... would you know who built the CM M40 stocks? Does it have aluminum bedding blocks? Perhaps Accurate innovations?

Rainier42, Accurate Innovations made the stocks for the SC M40 replica several years, don't think they made them for Mawhinneys replica since its only pillar bedded. Mike Koklulus, now deceased made an excellent copy of the M40 stock from an original he had on hand, his company is still in business,
