Little project I worked on today. Threaded a bbl shank cutoff to hold a 1/2-28 can adapter so I could open it up to 5/8-24 for a 300 Blackout.
Pics suck so I shot some thru my tig welding stereo microscope. They suck too but a little better than a blur.
Chopped bbl threaded for the can.

There is zero runout. I didn't check it. That's one of the beautiful things about machining. If you know what you're doing you don't need to check your work.

There's nothing to check. The threads on the bbl are on dead nuts. The adapter threads are as well. If the can is off it's on the mfg's end and can easily be proven. As far as publicity, I don't advertise unless you call posting here an ad. Most of the work I do is for hunters. They don't do much Tac or BR. As I've said before, those writers want you to pay labor to write an article. Seems it should be the other way around. I have all of the work I want.

Every single gun that leaves my shop is test fired and function tested prior to delivery. Every 1st cartridge is cataloged w/date and S/N.

Good idea from a liability standpoint. I left boxes of them at the shop I worked at when I left retail. Don't see the need now because I know there won't be a problem.
I know nothing about machining, but reading the thread I went thru a lot of popcorn and peanuts.

WOW, just f#@*ing WOW. I couldn't tell you the difference between a Mill and a Lathe, I leave that to people who know what they're doing. However, I HAVE dealt with explosives for over 20yrs, and have used them in anger on occasion. All this time I had no idea that I didn't know what I was doing because I double-check my work. Even worse than that, before I pop smoke on something that could KILL the guys on MY side, I ask SOMEONE ELSE who knows what HE's doing to double-check my shot to make sure I didn't brain-cramp on something. Hell, if given the time to pre-plan, I'll even do a fricken test shot just to verify that I'm going to get the desired result.
I sure do hope that the A&P Mechanics that work on the planes I fly for 15hrs on a stretch around the world DON"T know what they're doing, because heaven FUCKING forbid that they should double check their work before letting me fly on it.

And yes, I understand that setting up and operating the lathe to cut metric-pitch threads is a different set of operations than setting it up to cut concentric threads, but the entire premise of the question kinda undermines any claims as to superiority of one's knowledge or work. There isn't anything wrong with asking for help (and note that it was provided with only the most sincere of intentions), but following it up with a bunch of bombastic bragging makes one look... well, just a bit silly and insecure.

Thanks p&p! Mr Bryant, you prob find humor in a lot of things you don't understand. My question had nothing to do with how to cut threads. As I've stated before. you could teach a monkey to rebarrel a rifle. My question was merely about the function of the machine.

You also nailed it on the head. That's the whole intent of my shop. Give someone the ability to generate a repeatable/predictable result without spending a decade apprenticing them. The military has made a science of it; Cross Training, etc.
It's a business owner's wet dream if it can be done successfully and cnc's are nothing more than a force multiplier. 3 months ago John didn't know dick about chambering a barrel. Today he does 10+ per day as he answers emails and catches the phone. He does not have the power of divine intervention or a Ouija board so he does have to check his work.
Win/Win in my book.
So sit there a be a craftsman buddy. Knock yo self out brothah man. Start a full time gig doing it. I'm begging you to. Show us how its done, put us all out of business.
In the meantime, us dipchits will be right here amongst the cows mass producing our garbage. If only they were 3rd country nationals. Then I could violate a bunch of human trafficking laws as well.

You are correct in at least one case - I don't understand how your brain works, and yet it's fuckin' hilarious to read your posts.
Obviously your tolerance for stupidity is pretty high. You live with it every day. If I pull a car apart to repair after an accident or just because a customer wants to upgrade or change something. No matter how confident I am with my ability, I test drive, check and double check everything. Anytime you provide a service to someone you should at least make sure everything is safe to operate and pro forms to your standard. It's not just liability, it's good business.
So lets end this with...a contest! Submit to me your finest piece of gunsmithing and machining and i will judge which is the best and we can put this one to bed. The winning rifle will become mine and the winning 'smith will have bragging rights and the losers rifle as a trophy.

The best guys in the business still test fire their work. I would not want to start and finish a project without getting the satisfaction that it works properly. That would leave me unsatisfied in my work.

T300, you are talking apples and oranges. A vehicle has 1000's of parts. Most bolt rifles have less than 100. Only 3 are critical to to catastrophic failure. Bolt, bbl and receiver.

You know I suck as a machinist compared to a CNC machine. (although the last predator I did was a thou off on the rec. face) I tried to take some pics of the threads I cut today but I suck as bad with a camera as bad as I do on a machine. I think I did something wrong because I had to clamp the bbl in a vice to screw the receiver on. I could hardy get it on without a wrench. Lube helped but I almost had to stick a screwdriver thru the brake to get it to screw on. Feels smooth as glass but something must be wrong. Maybe I should testfire this one;-) Reckon I may have to get me one of them CNC thingamajigs.
Yep, try telling that to a customer that gets a rifle that won't perform after they spend their hard earned cash on it. No one is above a faulty part or a mistake on the machining. There isn't a person in the world that can tell me they run a lathe or mill with 100% success rate. That's not even feasible.
I couldn't agree more. You can bet your ass I've made plenty of mistakes. I like to call them Bud(wieser) marks. 2 bad ones that come to mind are bbls I trashed when I forgot to reset the Y zero when I was cutting opposing flutes. Nothing like watching a brand new blank fly across the room into the trash can. 1 was a factory bbl so I got to buy him a new blank, fit and flute it for the price of a flute job. That's a hard pill to swallow.
The key is to stand behind your work when they spend their hard earned $ Time will teach you not to make mistakes. Only a fool would knowingly turn out a job with machining mistakes.

I actually know Chad quite well as a gunsmith, master machinist, inventor, tinker master and a businessman. Guys with his skills are less than one in a million and I enjoy his posts about his builds. It humbles many, and is a great marketing tool for his business.
