Steve Adelmann, tactical and long range shooter, just published a wonderful interview with Mike Walker, the father of the Remington 700, the 222 Remington, improved button rifling, and many other innovations. Still sharp at 97 years old, Mr. Walker is a treasure to the shooting sports.

The article is in the May issue of Precision Shooting Magazine and is worth the price of admission.

Re: Mike Walker---Father of the Remington 700

Thanks for the heads up. Mr. Walker is a joy to be with and be around. I would say to speak to. But speaking to Mike is more of a shouting match. We used a legal pad very effectively. I haven't seen him 3 years. The last match I saw him at he was still giving everyone a hard way to go.

Our 52 grain BR bullet was a 99.9% direct reproduction of his Remington 22 BR bullet. And yes he gave me permission to say that.

Never had the pleasure.

But I am currently campaigning (feebly) with a 1980's vintage Remington M700 BDL Varmint .222 Rem. It's basic box stock and is teaching me things about how I've strayed from the virtuous path of accurate marksmanship. I know the stuff, but knowing and doing have somehow become two differing things. The Deuce is helping guide me back into the fold.

I had an 70's vintage varminter in that chambering. It was a delight. And you are right- it helps you remember the things you have forgotten.

Re: Mike Walker---Father of the Remington 700

Actually Mike is presetnly 98 years old, and will be 99 on December 5th. I talked to Mike on the phone about a month ago, (not an easy thing to do) and he was doing pretty good at that moment in time. I will get the article, but I very much doubt PSM will tell the rest of the story regarding some of Mikes innovations... I consider Mike to be a brilliant designer, possibly the last one still living today. I believe Mike is responsible for Remington surviving the proposed closing of the company that was being considered at the end of WW-II.

Aug, I believe the author stated that Mike was 97 at the time of the interview. His mind seemed very sharp in his answers. He stated that he stuck with Remington so long because he got to do pretty much whatever he wanted. Smart on Remington's part, lucky on ours. And to think that he did his stuff without CAD and CNC. Very talented man.

Mr. Walker lives just across the border in Hendersonville, NC but I do not know him and will never have the pleasure of meeting him. Those who have are blessed.

What ever became of Jim Stekyl?

Re: Mike Walker---Father of the Remington 700

The only thing I have left to build is a 6-250 Walker.

I had a early well used Rem. 40X in that caliber but Lyme's disease forced me to sell it with several others about 12 years ago.

It's probably one of the rarest 40X's.
I'd like to find another and while I'm dreaming a 40X in 6.5x55.

Oh, OK, the interview was last year then and not recent, makes sense.

So the article never discussed why Mike resigned in Jan. 1975, after 42 years of service - I did not think so...

Personally I never held Jim Stekl in high regard when he was with Arms Service. I do not know where he is at the moment, but I suspect I know where his soul might end up someday ;O)
