I think you'll find KG Gunkote was used quite a bit for many Crane-supplied small arms.

I heard they used powder coat on the barrel. From the one I was able to get it looks like on the bolt it has the original bluing from Remington.

I'd say Crane did the KG gunkote job about as rough as some of the bedding jobs I have seen on the return stocks. Whoever builds, beds, and sprays your finish will be way above "spec".

USMCSGT0331 hooked me up on a return stock and works well with the build. Thanks Again. I was able to score a couple of what appears to be original used MK13 cases as well. Here is some pics. 1998' receiver, correct lug ( believe to be take off), Lilja 2000' bbl, take off stock ,SAKo extractor bottom metal from USMCSGT, Stamped bolt handle to be correct, A191 chamber, in the correct case ( believed to be Team 2) original rifle serial number/scope number and name in tact. Just waiting on the correct badger rings and then i can set the over seas used NF correct 5-22 mil dot optic. ?? I have the accessories to complete the deployment kit and once i powder coat the barrel ill get another pic of the Rod,bore snake, bipod,cleaner, brushes, turner sling etc etc. Ill be building another one soon possibly for sale unless i tempt my self to do another one and machine the donut and put the mk11 suppressor on it.

No rounds throuh it yet. Needing correct rings and bbl needs powder coated. Going re bed for this action. Lug is a hair off even though it fits. Hopefully a couple weeks and will be finished up.

I PM'ed him about an hour ago. Got my Lilja barreled action back from LRI today...took em 2 1/2 weeks, and most of that was shipping. I'll post some pics later. Cerakoted it patriot brown as a base coat. I'm going to try to match the Seal stock paint scheme with rattle can spray, already did the Nightforce NXS...which I bought used so it was no heartbreak to spray paint it. I'm also building an M40a1 with McMillan smear stock and an M40A3. Going to put the MST-100 on the A3 and again, doing a worn rattle can finish to match the scope. I'm using a Remington 700 police...already tested it and that thing shoots...1/2 moa with surplus M118LR...out of the new barrel.

I do recognize those ICC aluminum cases. THey've been around at least since 89 when I first saw them. Funny thing, though, none of those has the aluminum locking bar that goes thru the latches.

Finished. This is the "Rat Rod" of the firearms world. I tried to match the paint on the NF NXS and Lilja barreled Rem 700 to the paint on the original stock. There is Patriot Brown Cerakote under the rattle can to protect the metal. Used a Timney trigger even though I have an original M24 trigger and a 40x trigger. Going to use the M24 on my M40a3
build.

Triggered, unfortunately I have neither an 01 nor 07 FFL which means I can't legally receive firearms through the mail, UPS, etc. In fact, with this whole ITAR thing, some gun shops would make an argument that I couldn't even do the gun if you brought it to me. Sorry. FYI, it's really not that hard to match a "battle worn" paint scheme as long as you remember that you basically can't do a bad job...although that is sort of my specialty, especially matching new replacement gun stocks to the appropriate amount of wear found on the rest of the gun. Below is an 1894 Winchester made like John Wayne's large loop carbine. I cut the barrel, made the band and sight, made a replacemt carbine stock and matched the wear to the rest of the gun, made the large loop lever, and added a saddle ring. This gun is 30-30, unlike Wayne's which were 44-40 and .45...he actually had three.

Ive read this several times now and I'm a little confused in some things. Is this the round that they are using now? I remember when they were testing the Mod 1 they were having problems with pressure issues and blown primers. Have they fixed this or are they still using the A191.

The A191 has been done with for almost 20 years...at least new production of it. The problem being the chamber was relevant to the SMK 190. Which unfortunately, does not transcend the transonic very well. The official move to the 220 SMK was in 2009, when Federal got the contract to produce 33 mil rounds at a cost of 49 mil.

The big problem, as you may have heard was the 190 SMK's were hitting sideways @ 1k. How sideways I wasn't told and have no photographic evidence. But, in my experience, the 190 SMK's have a steep boat-tail like the 168's. The 220's have a shallower boat-tail more like the 175's. Not the fastest bird in the sky, but able to weather the transonic transition without becoming unstable.

Added: I know you were thinkin' about Buffalo's tighty whities, that's why you really responded...cause you're a Marine...lol

adding to the confusion, the m248 was a 190 load. Not sure why they changed the designation from A191 to m248? Different powder? Different chamber? I have no idea.

190s fly just fine to 1k at 400' AMSL, at least all the ones I have seen.. [EDIT Running a simple JBM they are still going 1435- 1450fps at 1K pushing them at 2950 or 3000fps, using the reduced .525 BC.

They won't make it to 1500y though, and I think that is the parameter that changed. From what I've seen 1200 is about it.

That said, if a target is .7 of a mile away we should be able to just shell the fuck of of them or send in a could JDAMs. If it absolutely has to die, trusting a wind call and a CBS at those distances is silly. Instead of thinking of only ways to be surgical, maybe we need to get back to war fighting, understanding that war is ugly and people are going to die. IMO, better them than us.

I always found it next to impossible to follow military nomenclature. Why/what was the reason behind the test number? Why/what/when was it adopted and does this affect the random number they give everything? It seems to me some REMF's have nothing better to do than make numbers...like the ghost of McNamera hanging around.

In case you hadn't noticed, your numbers go backwards and forwards, and forwards and backwards. No wonder it's so difficult to get a new round. People making these numbers aren't even able to keep the ones we have straight. A new product in the supply system would bust the antique computer that generates this shit!

I spent a few minutes comparing the two stocks (pictured above and then the tan/ red tiger stripe from earlier) since it looked rather close to the one that was available, but I do not believe they are the same. That tan / red stripe combo looks damn good though...

Is anyone planning on threading their barrel? My understanding is that some of the Mod 0's were threaded and capped, but very rarely used with cans. What's the opinion on doing the tapered barrel / silencer combo like on the updated models? Incorrect? Acceptable? Complete disgrace? Just means you're committed to a KAC can and having the two specifically mated for one another.

I think you've got a great build. I know an individual voiced some disapproval, but they can go pound sand. It's your rifle at the end of the day and you are the one shooting it. It's not like you damaged any original parts in the process and it can be easily reverted for 'purist'

I've verbally committed to a stock that will get finalized in the next few days, and my barrel will be threaded one way or another since I have a magnum rated can. Will wait on a report from Sirhr as to what Alan's thoughts are on the larger Mod 5 barrel / taper / aardvark dick / KAC MK11 combo in a Mod 0 stock. (Cringe away, I like it) Otherwise a normal end cap thread will be fine.

RE: the threaded barrel and purism. While in the special ops community, of which this particular weapon started in, there were a lot of modifications made to a number of platforms. For instance, in our company arms room there were two .45's (1911A1's), two Browning Hi-Powers, and two High Standard HD Military's that were modified to take suppressors. In the case of the 1911A1 and HP they used an extended barrel that was threaded on the end. The High Standards were counter-bored and the suppressor screwed into that. While they may have been the same frame as the OSS issue pistol, the barrel/suppressor were quite different. The OSS version had an integral suppressor that came back over a pencil barrel.
At the time there was little guidance by Big Green as to how much a Special Ops unit could modify these arms. Generally, it was not acceptable to do so. We got away with it because we were part of Special Ops. What I saw with SF, Delta, and the SEALs were all kinds of mods/unauthorized shit. Including a SEAL packin' a .44 mag in a buscadero type rig. Custom leather no less. And, that went into combat in Grenada.
So, to say a muzzle on a Mk. 13 wouldn't have been threaded is saying you weren't there back when. Because most all the Special Operations had the lattitude to modify weapons. In short, they could just about do whatever the fuck they wanted with a lot of stuff. And, they had people who knew how to make or modify stuff so it would work. The whole Crane thing is about doing this. A lot this shit is thought up and built, then field tested, before it ever even gets submitted for approval.

That's about it. And to add just a little to that, some units got purchase cards after Gulf 2 kicked off. My buddies teams SPRs tossed the ARMS rings and KAC triggers. They had 20 MOA Badger risers and rings and either milspec triggers or Geissle. Some units had huge latitude until the stuff started to tighten up around 2006-2007.

While a Team Leader in 10SFG(A), Back before optics were common, I mounted a Bushnell 3x9 scope in see thru mount on my M16A2. I also wore a custom combat vest( fore-runner of the current vests) with built in STABO harness and LL Bean rubber duck boots. I carried a Wagaman fighting knife, only wore Polypropene underwear beneath my Gore-tex, no uniform. Carried 1 quart wide mouth nalgene bottles for canteens and carried my magazines in 2qt canteen covers (fore-runner of the dump pouch). We had a huge variety of custom and foreign weapons in our arms room.
